Five Nights at Freddy's (2023)
Fantastic Film
I'm not really a HUGE FNAF fan, but I have definitely watched Markiplier (and a few others) play through the entire game series over the years. I've watched several 'theories' from MatPat (The Game Theorists). And I've casually looked up some of the lore from the books and other media. But, I was still very excited to see this film, since unlike other video game adaptations, this one was based on a more unique and funny game rather than a boring action/horror one that is made for the masses.
I forced my mother and her boyfriend to go with me. My mother HATES horror with a passion, so I had to ensure her it was PG-13 and there was apparently no blood/gore or actual horrific images in it. We all went ahead and watched it. And...we loved it. All three of us. My mother laughed several times during it, and said it wasn't scary at all, but she really enjoyed it. The fact that it wasn't scary isn't a BAD thing like many critics make it out to be.
If you actually paid attention to the game series, you'd know that there isn't actually a lot of blood/gore and 'deep horror'. That isn't what the series is about. It's more about the complex story...with crazy, colorful animatronics sprinkled in for jump-scare fun. So, I got exactly what I hoped for with this movie. It was well-acted, the animatronics were adorable and awesome, the pizzeria looked great, the story was very fun (I loved the depth they gave to Mike, Vanessa, the murdered children, and Afton), and I loved the cameo from MatPat (apparently the taxi dude was also a YouTuber gamer, but I don't know them).
Like...to me, this was a 10/10 because...there's nothing I would change. It was perfect the way it was! I was very happy and enjoyed myself from start to finish, and I thought they did a fantastic job. What more would I want? So, if you want to be a hater, if you want to be one of the harsh critics, or you want to be a fake fan-boy who whines about the film and not realize that they're misremembering the games for something that they're not...go right ahead. But, for me? I literally got my 65-year-old mother, and her 62-year-old boyfriend, to both go see this...both who had NO clue what FNAF was...and both loved it. And, as a 'casual' fan myself...I also loved it. What more do you want?
101 Dalmatian Street (2018)
Extremely Adorable & Charmingly Brilliant!
I really hadn't ever heard of this show before, and only bothered to look it up when I saw cute pictures of the Dalmatian Dolly online. When I started to watch it, I got hooked immediately. It reminds me a lot of Littlest Pet Shop (2011), and that's a good thing, since I also adored that show while it was on.
101 Dalmatian Street is a very face-paced show, with each episode only being roughly 10 minutes or so, but honestly that works in its favor. The animation is really fun, vibrant, energetic, and warm. The voice acting is really good, the dynamics between the characters is great, and the show does its homework on dogs and how they tend to act and think (at least as far as I can tell). To me, this show feels like a lot of heart was put into it, and that's what I love most about it.
Is it perfect? Probably not. But, for me personally? I'm giving it a 10/10 because I willingly watched many episodes again and again, I keep thinking about the adorable cuteness, and I'll likely keep revisiting it in the future. So, what more could a show do to earn a 10/10 than that? This is just a really fun, heartfelt, adorable, charming, awesome little show. I wish it had gotten more seasons than what it got, and it should've gotten more attention, too.
Play Dead (2022)
Very Great Experience
I wasn't entirely sure what to expect from this movie going in, since the synopsis didn't really give me too much to work with. But what I got was quite the treat. The story is simple, but honestly simple is fine with me; you don't need things to be Inception-level confusing to be a stellar movie. The acting was very solid and believable, but naturally Jerry O'Connell stole the show. Pretty much a modern day Patrick Bateman, which should say enough.
It was cool seeing the minor antagonist Mannix actually become a good guy and shockingly survive the movie, not to mention helping out the main two heroes save the day, and even helping them get a good sum of money for their miserable living situation. I like seeing wacky side characters actually survive in horror movies, since normally they always get axed off unceremoniously. Also, the dog survived, too, which is always nice; even if the dog was trained to be a bad boy, it wasn't his fault, so seeing them not kill the poor animal was also nice.
I had a lot of fun with the movie. It was suspenseful, O'Connell's righteous speeches were awesome, the acting was solid, the story was fun, the music and camerawork was good enough (in my amateur opinion), and it was just a really great horror/thriller movie. I really don't know what more you could ask for. So, yes, I suggest you go and watch it and see what you think!
Rogue (2007)
A Solid Movie Made A Grave Mistake
What should've been a really solid horror movie actually got me close to throwing up, and not because of how terrifying the movie was or how shocked I was by the amazing story or great acting or anything else. No, it was the gruesome death of the poor dog, Kevin. You NEVER kill off poor, innocent animals in movies! Sure, if they're the wildlife or something, it's understandable. But when it's someone's freaking pet, and more or less a part of the 'cast', you do NOT do that! I can easily handle watching a million people get ripped apart by an alligator, but when you actually kill off a poor dog, and have the gull to show it being EATEN to the camera, you crossed a line. At least for me.
I know this is a really 'silly' reason to despise a movie, but it genuinely did ruin the entire experience for me. I love animals to death, and seeing crap like that really disgusts and angers me. So, if you're someone who just doesn't care, then go ahead and watch the movie, because everything OTHER than that part near the end is pretty great. But I simply cannot stomach such actions, so I'm giving it the lowest score possible.
Frenzy (2018)
Shockingly An Incredible SyFy Shark Movie
I know this rating might seem exaggerated and stupid, but this movie really shocked me. The fact that I was (no joke) crying at the end and it made me feel THAT emotional says that it did something right. I cared about all the characters. I felt that the animations on the sharks were very well done and mostly believable. The story, while somewhat predictable, still worked because the terror and atmosphere really fit the scenery. I also really loved all the flashbacks that helped us learn about characters that (albeit dead) helped fuel the main character's motivations.
I just really loved the movie. I mean, I hated it because it had such a sad ending, but I think that's to the film's benefit. It was a really beautifully-constructed story from start to finish and I commend it for that. The action was amazing; say what you want about most SyFy movies, but this one did not disappoint. The camera work and special effects were pretty solid and almost what I'd expect to see from a movie released in theaters.
I never write reviews, so the fact that I was so compelled to come on here and actually write this to share my thoughts probably says a lot, too. In a lot of ways, this movie reminds me of Bait (another SyFy shark movie), only this one has a lot more emotional impact to it. If you're a fan of likable characters, shark movies, and everything that goes along with that...but much better than your typical "cheesy B Movie flick", go ahead and watch this. I wasn't expecting much, but I was pleasantly surprised.
My Little Pony: The Movie (2017)
Best Animated Movie I Have Ever Seen
First off, I will say that I have been a lover of My Little Pony: Friendship Of Magic since it first began to be aired back in 2010, so I'm not someone who went into this blind. However, that being said, this movie is phenomenal. It's pretty much everything you could ask for in an animation movie, especially with a lot of the garbage they create nowadays.
The animation? Absolutely spectacular. I can't recall the last animated movie where I saw animation this beautiful, this well-designed, and clearly so much heart put into it. The characters? All enjoyable, all entertaining, all likable (even if they were meant to be evil), and all pretty important to the plot in their own ways. The story? Pretty solid. I'll admit they did try to rush some of the introductions to the new characters that were never shown in the television series, but honestly I think it works better that way. This didn't need to be drawn out, overly complex, confusing, or something it shouldn't be. This is My Little Pony: The Movie. And it succeeded above and beyond what it set out to do. The voice actors? Amazing. None of the celebrity voice actors overshadowed any of the normal ones from the TV series whatsoever.
Even if you're a hater of the series (for whatever reason), or you claim that it's "just made to sell toys", or you have something against Hasbro, or you think you're "too old" for this, or whatever other excuse you have...please trust me when I say this movie is amazing. It's definitely worth your time. The songs are really good, composed by a great talent in Daniel Ingram, and the messages and morals the movie teaches you is honestly something more people nowadays need to hear. With how dark the world is today, a good dose of heart, friendship and magic like this is exactly what we all need. Your age or gender shouldn't matter at all. From start to finish, from the characters to their voices, from the story to the animation, this movie has it all. All the effort and passion is there, and I'm extremely proud to call myself a fan of the show. I won't use the "brony" moniker, since I always found that silly, but I'm a strong, passionate lover of the series and this movie was a great accomplishment that everybody involved should feel 100% proud of for doing.
DuckTales (2017)
DuckTales (2017) Is Amazing!
This is how you do a reboot properly, and I couldn't be happier with what I'm seeing. First off, let me just say that I HAVE watched the original series. I'm 26; I grew up watching the original series. I've seen all 100 episodes. I watched the movie (several times). Nobody knows the series better than I do (at least the animated series; I sadly could never get comics). So, don't think I don't know what I'm talking about when I do. The reboot is BETTER than the original. There, I said it.
The problem with reboots like Teen Titans Go and Powerpuff Girls is that there's no heart behind it. It's all just for money. Teen Titans Go is a complete mockery of the source material, and even if it's "just for kids" and "isn't supposed to be serious", that's not a damn excuse. They flat-out make episodes to MOCK and ATTACK those who hate the show. The producers literally laugh in your face if you don't like it. The show is despicable and a complete travesty. For Powerpuff Girls, it doesn't have the heart, the passion, or the understanding of what made the original so great. It's just boring, stupid, and WAY too modern. Don't get me wrong; the new DuckTales is quite a bit modern, too. But there's a right way to mix modern and retro and a wrong a way. Powerpuff Girls did it the wrong way, and it's a shame. DuckTales (2017) has everything I could ask for. At first...yes, the animation bothered me. And the voices kinda bugged me, too. But I felt the same way with Gravity Falls, but ultimately I got used to it. I really can't say ANYTHING negative about the original, since it really was fantastic for what it was. I just feel like the reboot does everything even BETTER. The animation, while a little odd, really works for what they're going for. It really does make me feel like I'm watching an animated comic book or graphic novel, and the fast-pace animation with its quick wit and humor sells it for me. I get that the heads on the characters look "too square", and the animation can look "cheap", but it's designed to be that way for a reason. It works. DuckTales isn't supposed to be Avatar (the movie), it's just supposed to be a good, quality show for all ages. As for the voices...I'm sorry, but I'm GLAD the nephews actually sound like humans. It helps give them more personality than just...all being miniature versions of Donald. Again, I can't HATE on the original for doing that; it was just fine! All I'm saying is I love the voices. Scrooge sounds just the same as he did in the original; I don't see why people say he sounds different. He really doesn't.
The characters themselves...feel a lot more fleshed out. I know we're just four episodes in (technically five), but I'm loving what they're going for here. Scrooge feels a LOT more fun than he did in the original. I actually can tell Huey, Louie and Dewey APART now! It's a miracle! Huey is the smart/OCD one who is kinda the most boring (for now), Louie is the troublemaker and lazy one, and Dewey is pretty much the secondary main character behind Scrooge with his love for adventure and mystery. I'm GLAD they have distinguished personalities now. Oh, and if we're talking about better character development...hello, Webby. Seriously, if there was ANYTHING negative about the original, it had to be Webby. Dear lord was she an annoying baby. And, I get that people say she's just a duck version of Mabel Pines from Gravity Falls, but...I disagree. Mabel...is awful (sorry not sorry). She is annoying, girly, boy- crazy, stupid, and popular. I HATE her. Webby is insecure, awkward, aggressive, funny, and eager to actually do things that AREN'T girly. She is amazing, and likely my favorite character in the show right now. But, then again, I love Dewey. I love Scrooge. I love Launchpad. I love Donald (yes, DONALD DUCK is now a main character)! Hell, I even like the new Mrs. Beakley (when I first hated her, because I thought she was kinda nice as a sweet, timid lady in the original). I LOVE these characters. Not only do they honestly amuse me, but I find myself CARING about them. In the original...it was mostly just an adventure show. You rooted for the characters to win over the bad guys and get the treasure in the end. And...that was kinda it. With this reboot, they're really branching out to develop the characters and story around them. That is BRILLIANT! I also find myself laughing a lot at it. Its quick-paced jokes (which are sometimes meta) and wit/humor really work for me.
So far, they've only been on one adventure (technically). However, if this means more personal development for the characters, with the same humor involved, I'm all for it. I can take 'normal' episodes just focused on the characters and no actual adventures over just sending them on an adventure for the sake of the series title. Yes, they DO involve a lot of modern stuff (cellphones, modern lingo, video games, etc.), but they don't feel FORCED in. Like, in the Powerpuff Girls reboot, they literally have a segment in an episode of the girls twerking...and that's disgusting. Here, the modern stuff is mostly just to help keep with the times and it feels...natural. There is really nothing bad I have to say about this show so far. I really only watched Gravity Falls because one of my best friends asked me to; I wasn't really interested otherwise. But, with shows like My Little Pony and Littlest Pet Shop, I willingly watch them on my own and adore them. DuckTales (2017) is a show that I can happily watch on my own and I can't wait to see more!
