Golmaal 3 (2010)
Worst movie of the year
I am not against mindless entertainers (I love One Two Three), and I was able to enjoy some moments in the previous two editions, but this movie is a complete waste of time. None of the scenes are funny and there is just no coherence, all the characters are shouting at all times and going overboard. I got a bad headache after watching it, I am glad that I didn't have to pay to watch it. Clearly worst movies of the year doesn't even deserve a 1 star. There is hardly any plot and the incessant shouting and fighting and impromptu song sequences do not help in any way.
My sincerest request to the director, please don't make a Golmaal 4 and please stop abusing the name of Hrishikesh Mukherjee's Golmaal!
Hanuman (2005)
Story of Hanuman (Hindu Monkey God)
Hanuman presents the first serious and truly professional Indian effort at animated movie making. Expecting Disney like finesse would be unjust for a beginner but the makers of Hanuman did an awesome job. One would get the glimpses of Disney's Lion king and Tarzan here and there in the style of animation.
The story is something which every Indian kid grows up with, its the story of monkey God Hanuman, son of God of wind Varun and Anjani, he is an incarnation of Lord Shiva. The narration assumes the viewers knowledge of the Hindu epic Ramayana, so for those who have not heard of Ramayana would find certain parts of the movie indecipherable.
Its a movie which kids are going to love and adults appreciate. Highly recommended for a full family fun. Highs: 1. Reasonably good quality animation. 2. Great music. 3. Does full justice to the theme. 4. Young Hanuman is super cute. Lows: 1. Presumes viewers' knowledge of the epic Ramayana. 2. Some more detail in the story telling would have been appreciated.
Mahabharat (1988)
Full justice to the epic...
The T.V. Series Mahabharat produced by B.R.Chopra is the most popular t.v. series ever showcased on Indian idiot boxes. The extent of influence the series commanded on Indian population can be gaged from the fact that during the time of its broadcast streets would get empty, and it would be impossible to find a single living soul at the busiest of the town centers. People who were fortunate to own a television would play hosts to all the less fortunate neighboring families. Even passers by would get a place in ones living room.
The series though technically lousy, and made with cheapest special effects, ended up doing full justice to the sentiments with which Ved Vyasa compiled the greatest of the epics. Its 93 episodes take you through every possible sentiment, every possible emotion, every possible relation that a human mind can fathom. People not familiar with Hinduism might find this series a perfect introduction to Hindu way of thinking, and its deep rooted beliefs and the social structure of the Hindu society.
Series does full justice to the complicated intertwined stories and their sub plots. The story of Mahabharat is narrated by Time ("Samay") which was kind of nice concept and helped in rushing through the less important details. Baring a few, most actors did full justice to the characters they were portraying. The portion of "Bhagwat Geeta" (the divine song) was also performed with great gusto and in its true spirit.
If you want to feel the true essence of Mahabharat, then this is certainly the right thing for you. However the technical aspects might disappoint you. Highly recommended to everybody. By far the greatest story ever told, nothing in this world can ever come close to it.
Chupke Chupke (1975)
Hrishikesh Mukherjee shows his genius.
Chupke Chupke is masterpiece by Hrishikesh Mukherjee, I love his style of story telling be it Bawarchi, Rang Birangi, Naram Garam, Golmaal, Khubsoorat, Buddha Mil Gaya, all of which are great movies. All his stories have very simple storyline, powerful cast, lots of human emotion and patriotism towards Indian culture and languages.
Dharmendra is truly amazing, and so is Amitabh Bachchan and rest of the cast supports them well. Since most of the dialogs are in pure Hindi, some people may find it difficult to follow. Hrishikesh Mukherjee through his movies and characters always pointed to some aspect or the other of the lives of Indian people, and hence all his characters always feel very real and get deep inside your skin and you become a part of the act.
The practical joke played by a Botany professor on his brother-in-law is the focus of the movie, as pointed out by other commenter. Chupke Chupke is a film in which the dialogs combine with the situations to collectively impart the comic momentum to the movie which persist till the very last minute, very very entertaining film, highly recommended for the entire family. If you liked this movie, then do give the movies mentioned at the beginning a shot, you would thank me later. :) also highly recommended.
