All Creatures Great & Small (2020)
Magical.
I don't leave reviews too often. On a Sunday 7 weeks ago we had just sit down for the evening. My daughter and my Father and I were channel surfing when my dad landed on this. His face lit up and he began to tell us how great the original was and maybe we should give it a go. Post lockdown I think something like this was so needed. I was hooked from the first episode. By the 2nd ad break I knew it was something special. From season start to finish it was a warm, funny, magical and happy way to spend a Sunday evening. The 3 of us united every Sunday (which never happens) to watch. The characters are great. Each one with their own particular brand of magic to watch unfold. I'm genuinely sad it's over until Christmas. We can't be certain of too much in these strange times. But I know for certain all three of us will happily unite to spend some time with James, Tristan, Zigfield and Mrs. H. Its an absolute joy to watch.
Bombshell (2019)
Anyone who can't give this above a 5, cant see past the end of their nose.
I don't really have much to say... only that if you are not moved by the testimony given vicariously through these women then... What hope is there for any victim.
Chernobyl: Open Wide, O Earth (2019)
We're Still Wearing the Hats...
Its hard to find the words sometimes. There is so much about this particular episode that broke me in so many different ways. The search for the unanswerable question 'Why did this happen'. I cannot even begin to imagine trying to wrap your mind around the statements given by those on the scene while watching them literally decompose in front of you. Watching a family member at they're bedside comforting them with a touch that is deadly. The unfairness and the tragedy of the helpers being torn apart by an invisible force they fought to protect people from. The bravery of the miners who cared not for their safety by abandoning wearing protective clothing that may or may not have extended their lives followed by the small levity of 'what? We're still wearing the hats'. Everyone who fought to stop an absolute calamity from becoming something even more unthinkable (and that's difficult to imagine given the visuals here) by sacrificing themselves without question. Its a debt the world can never repay. Moving, disturbing and awe inspiring.
Chernobyl: Please Remain Calm (2019)
The Truth is scarier than any Horror Movie.
What is so terrifying is it's not trying to be a horror programme, it's what actually happened. It's not gratuitous... it's what happened. And it's scarier than any horror movie I could ever call to mind. There are scenes where my blood ran cold, where I felt queasy but most of all I was just horrified by the scenes that depicted those first on the scene. You always look for the helpers in any disaster. But what if the disaster overcomes the helpers. What if even the strongest of us are no match for the horrific event. It's almost unthinkable. But it happened here. This will stick with you long after the credits roll. As it should.
