The Last of Us (2023)
Best show of all time-really
Ok I love Pedro Pascal, especially as Joel. But this is only a slight bias. This show is incredible. It is a moment in time! It's metaphorical, tragic, funny, beautiful, and thought-provoking. There are layers upon layers, but ultimately it's commentary on the duality of love.
These episodes only get better with each watch, where sweet nuances arise that you've not noticed before. The special effects are pretty amazing. The dialogue feels realistic. The performances are breathtaking. Never have I seen work in the television medium that was so evocative. If you haven't seen this, you're missing out. Even if horror or "sci-fi" aren't your preferred genres, you'll undoubtedly find this series stirring something within.
Pet Sematary: Bloodlines (2023)
I wanted to love it, I really did
I thought: this is one of King's best stories, it has David Duchovny, what else could we ask for?! I was sure it was going to be at least decent. Alas, it could not muster up even enough spooky for even mild scares. King's story was so evil, so unforgivingly terrifying that I'm sorry to say I've yet to see any film do it justice. No exception here. This...was...not...it. As others have said, it started off somewhat strong but it quickly became clear that the returned had absolutely no real menace. The attempts at backstory were thin. David acted well as he always does-otherwise, it fell far short. Read the book, time better spent.
Labyrinth (1986)
Iconic cult classic.
This movie saved my life!!!! Ok, maybe not, but...I did rent the VHS from our neighborhood movie store approximately 167 times-that's gotta count for something. Bowie is entrancing, Connolly nails the "growing up is hard" vibe, and there are muppets! George Lucas, Terry Jones (Monty Python), and Jim Henson-what else could you possibly ask for?!
Hustlers (2019)
Everything Showgirls tried to be...
...and so much more. This cast, the wring, the costumes, the music!!!! Amazing film, to boot. The sheer dedication of J-Lo makes it incredible.
Tiffany Haddish: Black Mitzvah (2019)
A for effort...
Love Tiffany. This was a great special. It isn't traditional punchline stuff-she talks about "raising herself" and other stories...so it feels less structured then a lot of other comedy shows. She's really entertaining & her perseverance is definitely inspirational.
Harlots (2017)
One of the best shows out there!
This period drama is written & directed by women. It's funny, evocative, and smart. The characters are rich. The narratives are relevant. It's inclusive. It's just a work of art, really.
Booksmart (2019)
Hilarious & Smart!
I don't think I've LOL'd in a theater so much in YEARS! A great coming-of-age story, but also a great commentary on friendship, change, and self-awareness.
