Dirty Money: Hard Nox (2018)
Borderline Factual
I was expecting everythin - except this. Full of fallacies, pandering to emotions, and red herrings. The imagery of untranslated Hitler speeches to underline the fact of "bad german company" and the general lashes against Europe are plagued by hypocrisy; how can you talk about people building "machines that kill people" when your own nation is housing Lockheed, Smith & Wesson, Monsanto, and other companies that far exceed the damages done by VW and other car manufacturers?
The gas chamber was the pinnacle of the documentary. The direct reference to the holocaust in connection to VW's testing made me stop the documentary. Hiroshima? Nagasaki? Vietnam? Agent Orange? This is not about pointing fingers but don't you dare try and take the moral high ground on something when your own companies are genuinely far worse than anything VW has ever done. And the switch in music to underline the gruesomeness of the experiments - pathetic. Who knows what else is going on behind closed doors in the US...
As somebody already said: this scandal is a hoax. VW is the company who got caught doing something that is against regulations. I believe that this was done on purpose to strengthen the car manufacturers of the United States. If you want to save the environment then don't drive a car; 200mg more or less are not going to make a difference if you're already polluting anyways. And if the US actually cared about the environment & people, maybe they'd start looking at their own industries than trying to denounce European ones in the name of profit.
Momma Named Me Sheriff (2019)
Good spin-off
Some people should be banned from giving reviews... This show is a solid spin-off of Mr. Pickles. Seems like most people hate it (and subsequently gave it a 1/10 review, not even taking into account the actual positives the show has to offer, showing the vastly prevalent like/dislike culture (e.g. Amazon, YouTube etc.) vs. using your brain to give a score based on positives/negatives) because it isn't Mr. Pickles - however, the title should have been a dead giveaway.
The show has almost the same characters (minus Mr. Pickles) and they are mostly hilarious. The absurd tone of Mr. Pickles is most definitely not lost here (i.e. S01E07 "Sunday Man"), although the gore has slightly decreased. However, this makes the show a bit more accessible for non-Mr. Pickles fans. The jokes are solid, and the characters are unique and interesting.
Considering this has only 1 season I'd say watch the whole thing and make up your own opinion. As a fan of Mr. Pickles (8-9/10) I found this show to be a solid spin-off.
The Cohasset Snuff Film (2012)
Complete and utter trash - Don't waste your time
Before I say anything else - don't watch this movie. It is absolutely not worth it. This is the same found footage movie you've seen 20 times already. If you're in the mood for found footage watch one of the V/H/S movies or Southbound, because they have arguably more talented directors behind them.
As for this movie I don't even know where to begin. When I stumbled upon this movie I was told that this was pulled off the internet and very hard to find. Accordingly, my expectations started to increase. When the movie started, everything the narrator was saying seemed to be somewhat believable for about 10-20 seconds, then the story started to raise some eyebrows. Conspiracy, cover-up, and more importantly the horrendous sound work threw me off immediately. However, I refrained from looking up the name of the killer, in hopes that this movie is legit, and continued watching. More and more characters were introduced such as a clinical psychologist with a nervous eye, an author with the most outlandish accent I have ever heard and a single newspaper clipping about the backstory of the killer, and an aunt who is about to burst into laughter while talking about the murder of her drug-addicted sister and brother in law - wow. In only 4 minutes the movie throws so much exposition at the viewer, with such unbelievable delivery, that I kept finding it harder and harder to believe the premise. What made it impossible to believe were the glitches in the video camera of the killer. Just comedic. I stopped watching after 15 minutes in and trust me - any longer is not worth it!
This movie is utter trash. The cast is bad, the acting is bad, the lighting is bad, and the directing is bad. This movie has no redeeming qualities - well, maybe the boobs you can see around minute 6:45 but thats about it.
Glenn Martin DDS (2009)
reviews for the wrong reasons - or just the right ones?
Eric Fogel, the writer of the cult classic Celebrity Deathmatch on MTV, is a claymation god. The show is about a dad that is trying to bring his family closer together. And what better way than to buy an RV and travel the country?
The show is filled with puns that are so dumb that you can't help yourself but laugh. The show proves that delivery is an important part of jokes, as too many shows have failed at trying to convey puns as funny jokes. The voice acting is great for a show with less than 500 iMDB votes... And this is probably what struck me the most: for a show that is so unpopular (for the wrong reasons; or may be just the right ones?) it is a real gem. I've enjoyed this more than the last 3-5 Seasons of Family Guy, which is a staple show on TV.
Now for the reasons for the bad reviews:
The majority of negative reviews stems from what are most likely parents. This show apparently aired on Nick Nite, a program intended for teens. As such, I think the show explores a great deal of teen themes, however, it does have some gore and perverse themes. It reminds me of South Park at some places, especially since it also has a very unique animation style, albeit they have varying degrees of vulgarity (South Park being more vulgar). If you let your teen watch The Simpsons, then this show shouldn't be a problem either. However, the claymation does enable a more graphic display of violence than is seen in The Simpsons.
Funnily enough, the bad reviews attracted me even more to the show. What's better than parents getting upset over a show? Watching that exact show. Whereas South Park is a love/hate deal, Glenn Martin DDS is hard not too like. This show, and its writer Eric Fogel, deserves way more credit. It was just recently uploaded to YouTube on it's own channel. I sincerely hope that adultswim, given their track record and recent claymation gem "The Shivering Truth", will pick up this show and revive it. I have yet to see the second season, but I can already tell that this show is a hidden gem.
9/10
Love, Death & Robots: The Secret War (2019)
Incredible
This episode takes the cake for the best episode of Love, Death & Robots. The animation/CGI style is incredibly detailed and looks absolutely beautiful. The story is captivating until the very last moment and does not lack in drama. Musically, the episode really captures the spirit of the Soviets. There is simply nothing wrong with this episode.
They should bring back whoever made this episode for Season 2. Or better yet: let them produce their own mini series.
Love, Death & Robots: Alternate Histories (2019)
One of the only good episodes
As opposed to previous episodes, this one is actually funny. It is an interesting play on the idea of alternate universes and the alternative universes only get funnier. The humor, however, is more edgy on the level of South Park or adult swim, so not everyone's niche (as can be seen by the reviews).
Bird Box (2018)
Don't believe the hype
Bird box is a movie that is uninteresting, unspectacular, badly acted, directed and shot. Virtually nothing about this movie stands out. The story is a nice concept but horribly executed with Sandra bullock bringing absolutely nothing to the table. The child actors are very unbelievable and every event happens for the sake of happening and not because it adds something interesting.
It's a really frustrating movie and I recommend people who like incredibly bad and predictable Hollywood movies to give Bird box a go. For the rest: see it and form your own opinion. It's just not a good movie.
