Centennial (1978)
Centennial
Many mini-series have been made since the 1970s, and although all were enlightening, as well as entertaining, however, I found the series, Centennial, to be the best of the bunch! The scenery was superb! The acting was very well done. It was not only the history of an area located in Colorado, but also the settling of the West and the various cultures that contributed to the nation's growth. It was one of the first movies to depict the role of cowboys of other nationalities. The miniseries told the story from all sides: the Native American plight, the white settlers, the black cowboys and the arrival of the Hispanic cultures. It also related the story of the mixed races: the French and Native Americans, as seen through the eyes of the Pasquinel family. An excellent series! There has not been another like it!
Smoke Signals (1998)
Nice movie!
My young grandniece and nephew were visiting with me during the Christmas holidays several years ago and we rented this movie from the local library. Without a doubt, it was excellent. I wanted them to see a movie with various role models, and as I had never seen this movie, I thought it would be a treat for all of us. I especially liked Thomas and his stories. Stories are an important part of growing up in all cultures. We can learn about customs of various groups through them, as well as learn a lot about ourselves, as human beings. I felt that the problems that the young man was encountering with his father are relevant to all people, young and old, and if they are not resolved, unfortunately, those problems hinder personal growth. This film was not only entertaining, but thought-provoking as well. Well done!
The Best Man (1999)
a good movie about relationships
I enjoyed this movie. The film well depicted interpersonal relationships in life. All of the guys were different, yet complimented one another. Although the movie was about four Afro-American college buddies, however, I think that everyone could relate to the episodes that often lead up to the wedding. Some are hilarious, and some can be disastrous! The female stars were good, as well. I enjoyed the last scene...everyone could finally exhale and truly have a great time dancing. Nice movie! A lot of fun! Reminds me somewhat of my sister's last wedding! It was 15 years ago, and the event is still fresh in my mind. The actors are a great group of young stars to be. Hope to see more of all of them in films.
De-Lovely (2004)
De-Lovely
Fortunately, I was able to purchase a VHS copy of De-Lovely, as I missed the film when it was playing at the local cinema. I must admit that it was well-done. Kevin Kline was very good as Porter, and Ashley Judd was delightful as his wife, Linda. I loved the Venice scenery. The dance numbers were well done. And as a former costumer, I found the film's costumes to be great! The relationship between Cole and Linda was tastefully done. I had seen Kevin McNally in "Pirates" and enjoyed him in this role, as well. My first costuming job was with a small theater group in New York, working on a musical, based on Cole Porter's songs. Therefore, I enjoy being "reintroduced" to his music. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie!
The Passion of the Christ (2004)
The Passion of the Christ
I thought that the movie was excellent...well done by Mel Gibson. Realistic! I think the fact that the movie was in Aramaic added to the originality of the story. It was easier to accept and was less commercial. The actors were superb! Jim Cavaziel was great as Jesus. The actress who portrayed Mary was great, as was the Magdalene. I like the way that Mr. Gibson portrayed the Roman soldiers. Some were realistically brutal, while others were compassionate. The Sanhedrin was portrayed well, too, as were the apostles. John was steadfast and Peter demonstrated how human we really are. I loved the color technique that was used, and the music added much to the story. Very well done. A classic!
Alexander (2004)
The Greatness of Alexander
I went to see Alexander, after chatting with a neighbor. I found the movie to be somewhat interesting and informative, for the following reasons: Although much of the script did focus upon Alexander's bisexuality, however, I feel that it also focused on the influence that his mother had upon him. She used her attachment to snakes to assist her son in eliminating his fear, not only of snakes, but also fear of his potential greatness. Sometimes it is easier to be mediocre, than rise to one's level of competence in life. I also felt that through the character of Alexander's first lover, there was a portrayal of how wisdom can help our loved ones attain greatness, for in reality, not only was this young man his lover, but his conscience, as well. Aristotle, Alexander's teacher, believed in the superiority of the Macedonian race. However, by answering Alexander's challenging questions about other nations, he opened the door for Alexander to seek further answers, which started him on his way to greatness. It is interesting that the nations Aristotle felt were inferior to Greece, were the very nations that kept ancient Greek philosophy alive during Europe's Dark Ages.
Alexander was not only able to conquer neighboring countries, but he did so with nobility, by allowing many of his subjects to retain their status, and somewhat their cultural identity. This is very important to a person. His men followed him, because he first pointed out their noble deeds, then whatever constructive criticism was necessary. However, unfortunately, like many leaders, Alexander did not know when to quit while ahead. It is also interesting that upon the death of his noble steed, and his "conscience"(lover) his death soon followed.
Wars and conquerors will always rise. However, it is how the battle is fought and won that will remain in the hearts of those watching. I went in to view the film with certain questions, and I left the theater, with my answers.
