The best one yet
4 May 2014
mazing Spiderman 2 spent almost the exact amount of money on its promotion that they spent on its making. Such was never done before for any movie. Expectations were running high until Rottentomatoes gave an average rating to this movie. Why? What went wrong with this movie? NOTHING. This movie is amazingly beautiful. The franchise went to its core; to the heart of Spiderman's original story. Stop judging movies on the scale of Nolan's or Bryan Singer's. Who is Spiderman? Answer: A teenage boy. What do you expect from a teenage boy? To be serious as Batman or want him to feel out of place like Captain America. When you go to the original story of Peter Parker, or to say Avengers, he befriends Tony Stark. They get along because they both are almost same in their heart. Childish. Amazing Spiderman 2 is all Rock and Roll. There is speed, there are great one liners, but the one thing I loved about this movie is the story of Gwen and Parker. In the first three movies Spiderman franchise did horrible mistakes with the storyline. Now, what they are doing is to trace the origin of Spidey before Mary Jane enters his life. They did exceedingly well this time. Watch the first clash between Electro and Spiderman at Times Square. Fighting in between all those billboards and neon signs, the reason of spending such a huge amount on this movie became visibly clear that Sony has its faith on Spiderman as a brand. It will attract people as does the hyperspace of Times Square. The other thing that I liked about this movie is the background score. It is so refreshing and different from all those drum beatings that are going these days in the Superhero movie genre. After The Dark Knight, everyone wants to make one akin to it. This one is so sublimely different. I loved this movie, but I can't bet the same for others. This one is a little different from what we have become accustomed to watch these days in this genre. This one is the best movie of Spiderman made till date. I hope others will enjoy the same as I did.

Farhan has done wonders
12 July 2013
Few critics, few including Rediff ones whom I look for some good writing, have rated low to BMB. The reason they give is that movie lacks coherence and clarity. Really? I think they should only rate Hollywood movies because whoever thinks this movie is no good does not know what Hindi cinema is. Farhan has done an awesome job, and if I say awesome then it is not for his physique and dialogue delivery but for the transformation, he has gone to become Milkha Singh. We as an audience witness the physical stress and labor that an athlete as likes of Milkha Singh undergo to become a 'flying Sikh'. Hindi cinema celebrates the life of this living legend with songs and drama and music. Rakesh Om Prakash Mehra has done a decent job, still; I fell he could have done a lot better especially in the scenes of Milkha's childhood memories. His attempt of giving the movie an epic convention seriously affected the narrative portion. However, all this can be sided by the grandeur of Farhan's effort. I would like to mention a statement of one of the rediff users who wrote against critics who are undermining the effect of this movie: "note that 400mtrs is a very difficult race to run. it is at the border of quick races and long jogs. after partition India did not have either the experience nor the infra to produce runners for 400mtrs. So Milkha was a true champion in every sense. If critics pull films like these down for abstract reasons…we will forever have 20 goons flying in the air with one punch from one man. Grow up critics."

So true.

Love's Labour's Lost and Salvation of Kundan
22 June 2013
Warning: Spoilers
9 out of 10 movies are based around a theme where a boy sees a girl and then falls for her and next aspires for her love in return. This movie claims to be no different. However, it has some kind of Paulo Coelhoisque effect, which lingers and dominates the second half of the movie and the journey of Kundan's salvation really brings the heart out of the audience. Once I was told by my teacher that tragedy is not when something wrong goes to a person; it's just his bad luck or ill fate. Tragedy happens when an ego clashes with one's love. Saying so, this movie is no tragedy. As in here we'll find the confrontation of two different sort of love; one of Kundan's and another of Zoya's. People really need to see this colourful portrayal/celebration/confrontation of love on the screen.

The great aspect of the movie is the locations of Varanasi. I have never seen any other movie capturing the essence of Kashi in such a grand manner as this movie does. The screen sometimes appeared to be the portrait of Varanasi with all its colours, galiyas, ghats and so on. I guess after this the other filmmakers will also realize the potential that this city can offer them on the screen. In addition, the melodious tunes of Rehman bring the vibrant nature of Shiva's nagari with all its thumping and tablas and shanais and chanting. Audience will just fall in love with the first half of the movie. I want to see more of Dhanush, national award winner, in Hindi cinema. He has such a powerful screen presence that you will be in awe to see how he grows his character putting all different shades in it. So innocent, so so innocent. I just loved his Kundan. Sukanya Verma wrote in her review that Kundan is a gem (pun intended). I say, indeed, he is. For Sonam Kapoor, I'll say people should start taking her seriously as she has an immense potential in her yet I feel she should work more on her dialogue delivery. Her Zoya is the best she has offered yet to us, and I believe that this is just a beginning for her illustrious career. I highly recommend this movie to each and everyone who have loved and felt its pangs. If not, then go for some nice dialogues and yes for Dhanush.

cannot ask for more
14 June 2013
Warning: Spoilers
BANG! BANG! BANG! Superman is BACK with a BANG. What is wrong with critics? If the same were under the name of Marvel featuring Hulk then I guess they would have been delighted. One of the critics wrote that it is part Thor. Seriously? Is it? In answer to that Superman is a born hero. He is not the product of an experiment or is the son of God. He is just a simple man with his weaknesses and also the power which is a gift of this planet to him. Martin Luther once exclaimed 'until a man is nothing God can make nothing out of him', and that's what Superman is. He is Everything which a genetically advanced generation of human species can achieve. He is 'the good' around which our society will build itself. He stands as a dream of the notion of 'American dream' to which others will look for their salvation. Now coming to the script...ummm...do I need to say anything about it? Come on we all know that it is penned by Chris Nolan and David S. Goyer. Now what can be better than this duo? One thing which I admire in Nolan's movies is that he always brings illustrations from literary texts, and this is what makes him stand apart from other directors and writers. In this movie Huxley's Brave New World serves his purpose. Visually, the movie is spectacular, stunning, amazing, grand, majestic whatever way you define it. Choosing Zack Snyder for the direction was an awesome choice, and he did justice to it. Though somewhere I felt that the neo – superhero concept of Nolan where the hero fights with his emotions and with the society all at the same time lacks the substance here yet we cannot complain because the second half is visually so authoritative that you cannot ask for more. This movie comes as an answer to Marvel that now DC is ready for them with their lot of superheros. I hope this screen war continues and grows bigger because it will prove to be a boon for the audience. Four stars out of five from my side. Go watch this movie with your friends and family, and you'll not be disappointed at all.
