Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore (2022)
The series is growing up along with its original fans
We were introduced to the Harry Potter world over 20 years ago. We, the original fans, have grown older, and I love that so has the series. The whole lot of complainers want the "rinse and repeat" effect of kids movies. I appreciated the story, the characters, and especially learning a bit more about Aberforth, along the way.
I would have given it a higher rating if they'd kept Johnny Depp.
The Adam Project (2022)
The Recycle Project
It's a cute little flick to watch with kids if you have any. Great cast, but predictably Ryan Reynolds plot and dialog. Tired and unoriginal, as are casting Mark Ruffalo to play a nerdy genius, and Zoe Saldana to play a tough space chick who can shoot guns and put up a fight, and well... Jennifer Garner in any role, ever.... Right, they also borrowed a Reynolds version of the kid from Iron Man 3.
Spencer (2021)
Tired subject, A good exercise in Acting
I may be one of the few people on this planet who doesn't worship Di, but I checked out this flick since Kristen Stewart got an Oscar nod for it. It's a couple of days in the life of the bullemic, neurotic, depressed, crazed princess. KS did do a great job of portraying emotions in a blender, but it didn't covert me into a Diana sympatizer. The actress's naturally awkward demeanor and tortured/uncomfortable look were perfect for the role. A highlight of the movie is the echo of Diana's distant relative Anne Boleyn, felt throughout the movie.
The Royal Treatment (2022)
Cute Flick - perfectly corny romcom
NY hairstylist finds herself in an Eastern "European" castle on a pay-of-a-lifetime gig, and influences changes in the life of the prince in several ways.
Mena Massoud is way too good for this little flick. It felt like he was the only professional actor in the entire cast.
Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts (2022)
I wish it were as long as all the movies combined
I dare any Potterhead to watch this without tearing up at some point! A WONDERFUL reunion of actors and directors, discussing experiences, memories, stories, the joy, hard work, magic, and nostalgia of the greatest story ever told! Love this and will watch it again as soon as I've finished typing this.
Death to 2021 (2021)
Netflix has effectively made time capsules obsolete
Netflix has effectively made time capsules obsolete. Love it. Not as good as the 2020 version, but slap-in-the-face equal-opportunity-offender of all! Wish it was longer and had a bigger cast.
Respect (2021)
I already knew she can sing, was hoping for more about the person.
Hollywood really sucks at making biopics. These movies are as cookie cutter as Hallmark Christmas movies. The formula starts with a few scenes of child prodigy, next comes the tragic event, then stardom/success, then the one controversial/norm defying event, and then cut to an old video of the real person as factoids scroll on the screen... such a huge dis-service to both the person whose life story is being told and the actor who gets the lead role. Jennifer Hudson did an amazing job singing, but this movie is already forgotten. Aretha Franklin is a huge icon, but for the movie watcher who knows nothing about her, she would come across as a bratty church kid who could sing.... Watch it for the music, not to learn about Aretha.
tick, tick...BOOM! (2021)
So beautiful'
I stood up in my living room and clapped... for a long time...
Aptly named, this is one brilliant portrayal of emotions in a blender... not the attention-seeking, self-destructive drama of a melodramatic youth (yeah, I said it), but the kind a brilliantly creative, empathetic, and curious mind suffers when the all-consuming need to create has to idle in the wings, to let the realities of life take center-stage. Andrew Garfield is phenomenal as Jonathan Larson, especially considering he learned to sing just for this film. Then there's the fact that it was directed by the incomparable Lin-Manuel Miranda.... Oh, and those who adore musicals, will be jumping up and down spotting Broadway legend cameos.
Normal People (2020)
Beautifully done
Beautiful, fresh, raw, captivating acting. It is not the romp some will lead you to believe, but rather complex and dark journey, that will keep you mesmerized and hoping for a season 2. Give the dialog your full attention.
Love Hard (2021)
Really wanted to like the underdog
Love the premise! Cute and will become one of those holiday re-watches, like The Elf.
The bad - ZERO chemistry between the leads and tough to like a 30 yr old guy who lives in his parent's basement... come on now! Could you you pick a less unlikeable character?
Black Widow (2021)
Booooooring!
First, why do you make a movie AFTER you've killed a character? Nat deserved better, before she was killed off.
The movie was dumb! The only tiny spark was the sister. Hope to see her in future Marvel movies.
Free Guy (2021)
The Truman Show sequel starring Deadpool
The Truman Show as a Virtual Reality, instead of Old School "Reality" TV show.... Tired humor we're accustomed to seeing from Ryan Reynold (Deadpool, toned down). Overall really silly.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021)
Predictable Chinese storyline. All hail Awkwafina & Wong!
I really wanna do the Michael Pena summary, but here's a MUCH shorter version:
So its like a Joy of Luck Club mini reunion, but then there's this parkour on crack session... but then they ride Mr Weasley's enchanted car to this Chinese Wakanda, and then ride Mulan's Mushu to fight the Chinese Kraken and save the world... and basically Awkwafina and Wong steal the show! Welcome to the hotel Californiaaasa!
Solos (2021)
Great acting
This may be one of the most beautiful things I have ever watched.... Watch it alone, without interruption, REALLY LISTEN. If you watch it like a movie, distractedly, as background noise, or looking for random entertainment , you will hate it.
Also, this is some of the best acting I have seen.
Abigail (2019)
Horrible, horrible dialog
An aspiring child screenwriter would have done a better job with the dialog. Beautiful filming locations and sets are abolished by terrible story telling.
Winter Castle (2019)
The star of this movie is the ice hotel
Terrible plot, totally unfair to the "date," bad writing. Also, they really couldnt spring for a few fresh flowers? The cheap craft store flowers for the wedding/veil really made this movie an apparent low-budget blah.
