Among the best in Telugu
6 March 2006
The story sounds very familiar, yet it has all the originality, along with wonderful acting from ANR and playback singing from Sri Ghantasala. The story is simple. The setting is made in around 1600-1700, in the empire of Vijayanagaram. ANR belongs to a high caste (brahmin) family. He lives with his brother and sister-in-law, who is also his closest friend, he treats her like a mother.

Anjali is part of a troupe that take part in drama for their earning. Their "lower caste" is a big hurdle for them.

The rest of the story is how ANR marries Anjali, and how he goes against the norm and makes people realize that all humans are the same.

Music is top notch, overall it is a great movie. A must watch for everyone.

One of the greatest movies

It really is!

Excellent direction and a wonderful exhibition of realistic action by the legendary ANR. He is really unparalled when it comes to socialistic movies and this one is great. The assets to the film a) great songs, great stanzas from saint tukaram b) great direction, very simplistic and realistic c) wonderful acting by ANR, Anjali devi d) sung by Ghantasala and Ramakrishna, cannot have a better combination for this movie

A very inspiring, devotional movie in 1973. It is based on a saint by the name Tukaram, from Maharashtra. It it the life about him, how he realizes god, and how he teaches people to live a noble life.

Must watch for any Indian!

An epic

This should definitely go down as one of the greatest movies in the 1980's. Music, moral, and will power is all what this movie is about. Chiranjeevi was superb, playing the typical classical musician/societal role to perfection. The rest played their characters well.

This film won 4-5 National awards! and many other film fare/Nandi awards. Film wasn't a huge hit because of the time it was released but will be remembered always!

Bilhari, Tarali Rada and many more songs are worth listening. Lot of moral, lot of theme in them. The movie is smooth, the story is very plain and simple.

one of the greatest

These type of movies should be sent for Oscars. WHAT A MOVIE! Despite being in Telugu language, since Telugu being a classical Lang. and close to Sanskrit anyone who knows Hindi can understand this. Music is great, acting is even better. It casts arguably the greatest Indian actor, NTR, and the great lady savithri. Doing roles like them are just so difficult, and this movie portrays the great Indian epic with utmost ease.

Songs are a great addition to this, salalitha raga sudharasa saram by DR. Balamuralikrishna standing out among other great ones. The amazing stanzas, the picturization and the whole screenplay are brilliant. Worth watching for anyone who understands Telugu, or even a bit of Hindi or Tamil will be enough.

a wonderful movie, can watch it anytime

One of the better movies made in Hindi. Simple story but outstanding direction, acting by the two new comers, Salman khan and Bhagyashree. She is very pretty and looks traditional, that adds to her beauty. All other actors have done justice to their roles.

Songs are great to watch and listen...a must for a Hindi movie fan. And yea...Maine pyar kiya and Hum Aapke hain koun, and DDLJ are in the same league, popular romantic flicks, watchable by everyone.

It does have some comedy however and some sensible action (i mean..the regular fights). It became such a hit that it was re-made in English and Spanish. very neat film..must watch.

one of the best

Warning: Spoilers
really is one of the best movies made in telugu and also totally in India. very simple story, a person wonderfully talented in classical dance but not interested in it. She thinks that these classical and cultural things do not take you anywhere, which is against her father's and the hero (venkatesh's) opinion.

The climax is where she realizes how great our culture is, how devotional and soul-awakening this art is. Songs such as andela ravamidi, sivapujaku, gallu ghallu etc are superb. SPB did his best.

It occupies a special place in Indian film history, for it has given life to the dying Indian culture and art.
