Werner - Das muss kesseln!!! (1996)
You milage may vary, but this movie is beautifully crafted
I am surprised to see that Werner 2 is so much less favoured than the first movie. Some say it is too detached from the comics, others say it's too different from the first one. I say this movie has some of the best writing I've seen as of lately, great and believable characters and very striking humor.
Your milage may vary, but the craft and effort behind this movie cannot be overlooked. The movie is full of details and manages to establish antagonists such as Schröder with very little screentime. The race scenes are fun and really makes you want to punch Schröder into his petty face.
What else to say? The rest of the movie is over the top, but because it is grounded by its quirky characters it never gets too ridiculous. I bet most of the characters are similar to people we all have met at one point in our lives. You would be wrong to mistake Werner and Andi for vulgar rednecks, they are just two simple dudes who want to have fun and enjoy what they are doing. Something to aspire for, really.
I'm an avid movie watcher and my standards are relatively high. Nonetheless Werner 2 is among the best movies I have seen in recent past. I don't know how well dubbed the movie is in English, but in German it certainly is a treat.
Some people say this is just "one movie", but its narration really is not so much different from the first. Similar to the first movie it has one overarching story, but all of its sub plots contribute to the whole picture in small and big ways. This shows the brilliance of the movie's writing: The transitions between plot and sub plots is so frictoinless that it's hard to spot that it is even there. In comparison, the first movie is quite a mess.
This is a definite German classic and if you happen to understand German fluently, but sure to give it a try! Whether you hate it or love it, it really is worth to experience this very thematically different kind of movie. I can't say more without starting to spoil the movie :-)
I actually feel bad for not giving this movie not a better rating, but I reserve 9/10 for epic movies of grander scale.
The Strain: New Horizons (2017)
A big step closer to the end
Let me make this clear, this show has its problems and fair share of questionable decisions by the lead characters. Also, this show is not for everybody, which very much applies to this episode in particular. It is a dark show about the gruesome defeat of mankind and this episode is another step into the abyss.
S4E4 starts out slow with Dutch and Eph but ends with a vengeance. It is about a reveal that shouldn't surprise anybody but comes with such ferocity that is nothing short but brutal.
Gus and his gang have some screen time and want to avenge the death of a gang member. It turns out he was killed by a group of ex- cops which are subsequently ambushed, killed and raided. Gus has several strong moments, but it all does raise the question of who exactly are the good guys?
Meanwhile, Eph and Alex lose their operation and bond over the suffering of their similar fates. What is there left that can be fought for? It feels like the weight of the world is on their shoulders and they fight a perpetuate war they cannot win.
And Dutch... oh girl, what have you gotten yourself into?
This is apocalypse done right. Great performance by everybody. Lightning, pacing, etc. is just spot on.
