Night Tide (1961)
A gorgeous, horror tinged romance between two lost, lonely souls.
This movie has a strange, powerful grip over me. I don't think I've ever seen another film as many times as I've seen Night Tide. The cinematography, lighting, isolating shot composition and staging all come together beautifully to create the distinctly off-kilter coastal pier where the film takes place. Combined with the simple, Lewton-esque story, a good (if at times overbearing) score, and wonderful performances by Hopper and Lawson, you have yourself a stellar film.
It's a love story about two lonely people with troubled pasts and presents, and about the joy they find together. A joy they're so desperate to experience that they might be turning a blind eye to impending tragedy...
I highly recommend watching this late at night, preferably with the sound of crashing waves drifting in through an open window.
Curtis Harrington was just so talented.
