We Need to Do Something (2021)
What the...what???
I know that everyone is use to seeing the "what the hell did I just watch" review, but seriously.... WHAT THE HELL DID I JUST WATCH? I am fairly certain that I have never left a review with those words, but for this movie it is definitely warranted! I have never complained about spending $6.99 to watch a movie, but I would have rather spent the money on ANYTHING else. $7 worth of dirt, sure why not?!? Honestly, I would have rather sat in my own bathroom watching paint dry for 96 minutes!
I don't want to leave any spoilers for those of you who decide to watch this film, but I suggest watching anything else. There is really nothing good I can say about it other than I'm glad it's over. You can't even blame Covid for this mess!
Spell (2020)
Better than I thought it would be.
First off I will say that this is not really what I would classify as a Horror movie (unless it was something actually happening to you). However, it is definitely a Thriller.
I believe that it deserves a solid 6 stars just for holding my attention all the way through the movie. At times it reminded me of "Get Out" just based on style. If you are the type that tends to over-analyse everything you watch, then you probably won't enjoy this movie as much as I did. I have that problem too when it comes to things needing to make sense throughout a movie, and the stupid decisions that the characters in the movie make. Spell, although not perfect, mostly made sense. I didn't find myself constantly thinking "how stupid can you be" or "this makes absolutely no sense; no one would do that". Instead, I found myself just watching to see what happened next.
Just go in with moderate expectations, and you should find it enjoyable. I even paid about $10 to rent it on demand, and I don't regret spending the money. I did give it 7 stars just to bring the rating up slightly. Ignore the super high and super low scores. This movie doesn't deserve either. For me, it is a solid 6 star Thriller.
Poltergeist Activity (2015)
Not a bad movie!
I am not sure why this movie is rated so low. It isn't anything particularly special, but it is worth a watch.
This genre rarely produces any great movies anymore that haven't already been done a dozen different ways. This movie is one of those, but it isn't corny either!
It is creepy, but not really scary.
The young female lead is pretty well acted, certainly much better than the father role.
I would say that for my $2.50 rental fee it wasn't a waste of time. I generally fast-forward through most of the horror films released these days, but didn't need to do that with this film.
The Paranormal Diaries: Clophill (2013)
Not a masterpiece, but not a failure either!
This movie plays out like a reality TV show/documentary. There isn't a lot of action to be had with this film. But if you like Ghost Hunters or Ghost Adventures, then you will probably like this as well. There is nothing new in this film, but it works well for what it is. It is somewhat slow as with most of these types of films... Interviews with "witnesses" first, followed by a night or so of "data collection/baseline events", followed by the "real" investigation. I was able to watch it without fast-forwarding through as I do with most movies like this. Acting wasn't horrible and the characters were believable as "everyday" people investigating these types of events.
Sawney: Flesh of Man (2012)
Inbred Parkour Minions Anyone?
Okay, so I just finished watching this movie and I cannot believe that I only fast-forwarded once or twice. Lord of Darkness is a movie about Sawney Bean's clan. This is suppose to be based on a true event. In an attempt to verify this story, I looked it up. This is actually based on a (potential) myth. There are no verifying accounts based on missing victims and supposedly the clan killed about 1000 people before being caught.
Lord of darkness is centered on the "fact" that one person escaped and has made it to the 21st century. The movie itself has an interesting story line, but could have done without the inbred parkour "minions". Those scenes are funny to me. There are several scenes that are interesting and are acted well. Overall, this is not a horrible movie, but it doesn't come close to any nominations either.
There is a lot of gore, so if that's the genre you are looking for, then you found it! However, if you are looking for a horror story, then skip this movie, There is nothing scary about it. The creepiness factor is high throughout this movie, but there is nothing special to comment on. I give this film a 4/10.
Amy (2013)
Really bad!
I cannot believe what I just watched.
This movie was so bad that I had to fast-forward through most of it. The acting is HORRIBLE! The woman that plays Amy is the best actor/actress in this film, and she wasn't very good.
The others just really stunk! I don't think "wooden" explains it. It was truly awful acting!
The story and plot aren't very good, and there is really nothing worth mentioning.
The "special effects" are so bad that I can't believe that this film was made recently.
Just truly AWFUL!
The Haunting of Helena (2012)
Deserves a little more credit!
I read most of the reviews regarding this film, and truly expected it to suck enough that I would have to fast-forward. That is how I view most low budget "horror" films. However, I didn't fast-forward the film once. I am a huge horror fan, and though this one didn't give any real scares, it didn't bore me to tears either. The plot of the story was interesting, and I (like many other viewers) didn't see the end coming until right before it happened. I can't say the ending was great, but it was at least interesting. If you have a little time to spare, and have watched pretty much everything else that has come out recently, then give this one a shot.
Killing Season (2013)
Not bad - worth a watch
After reading some of the reviews, I thought I was going to be horribly let down. That's not the case here. I understand others' POV here... The movie may not be accurately based on facts; Travolta's accent kinda sucks (but he seemed to give it his best shot and stayed in character throughout the film); it may not be their best movie, etc... But the movie wasn't a huge let down either. It was entertaining and is worth a watch. My husband and I were both entertained and it was good enough to pass the time without any fast-forwarding. No, it's not going to win any awards, but most of the poor reviews are from people outside the US and they are probably more aware of the point in history (and actual facts) that this movie portrays.
If you watched "Phantom" and sat through it criticizing the fact that no one even TRIED to have the appropriate accent, or that some of the historical facts were "blurred", then you probably won't like Killing Season. However, if you can go into this movie without expecting accuracy and just watch it for entertainment, then you might enjoy it! We did!
Frankenstein's Army (2013)
Fantastic creature design makes this worth watching!
First and foremost, I rated this a 7/10 for creature design alone! They are truly unique and remarkable, even if the movie itself falls short. The acting is sub-par and there is no real character development at all. Some of the characters were so disgustingly horrible that I was begging for them to be taken out by the zombots immediately and all but cheered the moment they were.
If you want to see some fantastic creature design, give this movie a try. My husband and I paused the movie several times just to take in the whole creature design aspect. It is entertaining enough from start to finish to warrant a viewing. It's not really thought provoking, but if you are looking for some mindless fun then give this flick a go!
Magic Magic (2013)
Very confused...
I'm not sure where to start. I feel like I just wasted my time on a movie that really went nowhere. The movie starts out fine, has an interesting cast of characters, and what sounds like an interesting plot. After watching about 30 minutes of the movie, I started to get bored with the way things were going. As I'm sure most people do, I started to form my own opinions on what was going on and was leaning towards Alicia being nuts and having some kind of mental breakdown. I continued to watch the remainder of the film hoping for that 'surprise twist'. Like perhaps we would find out that there really was some kind of "magic magic" going on and Alicia was being affected by it. Some form of possession or ritualistic voodoo type stuff... NOPE! I watch all the way to the end and find out that Alicia was just crazy. But then, her 'friends' take her to a witch doctor and I start thinking "okay, maybe some spirit is going to fly out of her mouth, or she's going to vomit the evil out". NOPE! Just some crazy witch doctor doing some weird ritual that, in essence, just kills her. I watched through the credits still thinking that maybe 'her spirit will be cleansed and re-enter her body, and she would wake up' like the witch doctor said... NOPE! For me, this movie was a huge let down. It had the ability to be something better, but just fell short with the ending.
