Outlast (2023)
When vile behaviour destroyed a great show.
As someone who is utterly tired of fake survival shows like Survivor and all the plotting and bickering I was really excited over some real survival stuff. Set in the alaskan wilderness in the fall this was gearing up to be epic. The first three episodes were great. They gave us just that pure and raw survival in the wild, featuring tallented people showing off their skills. Then two psychopaths and their puppy decided to go full Lord of the Flies and start steeling from and terrorising other teams. Thankfully no one else fell into this vile behaviour but it did force out some of the most competent players. So by episode 5 the series had decended into a savage and morally reprihensible version of Survior. It went from 10/10 to 3/10 and from then on I lost all interest in the show as psychopathy and not survival seemed to be the way to victory. I did fast forward to the end to see who won. That gave some closure but the thing that bugged me the most was that the vile behaviour of three people went uncommented and unchecked. They jeopordise the lives of other contestants and commited what would be crimes in the real world. At the very least they should have been booted of the show. I would love if there were a second season where there were some basic rules as to ensure that for ones the best survivor wins and not the best schemer.
War of the Worlds (2019)
Good but poorly executed premise
SPOILERS AHEAD!
I don't mind so much that it is a low budget production. As long as there is creativity one can get away with a lot of stuff. However this is the opposite. I for one can't resist a post apocalyptic empty world, and I guess it is the one redeeming factor that keeps me whatching half way through the second season. They do a pretty good job at creating that erie athmosphere. There is some suspence initially until you realize that robot dogs are all you are going to get. Into the second season, we learn that sick humans control the dogs. It is alluded that they are extra dimensional and that they've come to kill professor Bill since he is about to kill them off with a virus. Hmm are we dealing with a time loop paradox here or what? That would be awesome if only they could deliver, which they can't. The robot dogs spoil it for me as they are a bit silly and to make matters worse, the sick alien people are about as intimidating as Bambi. They're just regular folk with regular guns. You'd think people able of multidimensional travel and blasting a global brain frying emp would be able to produce more sophisticated weponry than 21st century guns and silly dogs. So by the second season there is no suspence at all. The only thing that keeps me whatching is to see how the writers solve the possible multidimensional time paradox.
American Vandal (2017)
When turd becomes deep
Absolutely love this series. It combines sick humor with serious questions about life. Loved season one in all it's craziness so I thought season two wouldn't match up but dude... it is not as funny, and takes a darker turn but the script is very well written and the unexpected turns are many. Eventually it turns deep and it moved me to the core. Now that is good TV. It is a must see on Netflix. I binge-watched the two seasons. Let's hope for a third... in collage I suppose.
Tomb Raider (2018)
Surprisingly good
As an ardent TombRaider fan, having played all games, the previous couple of Tombraider films were dissapointing to say the least. So I had high hopes for this one. Surprisingly it delivered. I loved how real Alicias Lara Croft felt. Just like the last games this movie turned Lara into a real person rather than a comic book character or Angelina Jolies pin up-girl. I also loved how they manage to recreated the magic feel of the two last games. They took us to the familiar Island but from there the story diverges. The story was good enough, not spectacular, but compared to the older TR-movies, a huge step forward. Also better than the last Indiana Jones-movie. So it is not nearly as bad as many make it out to be. I certainly hope for a sequel.
Fear the Walking Dead: What's Your Story? (2018)
Like a water hole in the desert
Now that is how you reboot a tv-franchise on the verge of self annihilation. Season eight of The Walking Dead was almost like a comedy in how bad it was written. The Fear of The Walking Dead was an alright season up until the the end when it became rather laughable how an 18-year old girl suddenly started running a ranch with hundreds of more experienced people. So this reboot, because that is what it is, was a rather welcome thing. I mean kill off Rick already. And Madison "I've got to protect my children" has been annoying from day one. I'm glad they killed off Travis in last season and I hope Madison is next to go. I thought the new and colorful characters were a welome addition to FTWD as I have never connected much to the Clark family. I hope this will make FTWD what TWD should have become but didn't. For the first time in many years I am excited about a new season. Don't let me down AMC.
Freakish (2016)
So many questions...
Spoilers: This series leaves one with a lot of questions:
- A monumental catastrophy, where is FEMA, the National Guard or the US Army?
- Almost a fortnight passes before the end of season 2. How come there is no weather? Why hasn't the gas disipated or blown away?
- Even a school kitchen would have limited resources. How come this does not worry them?
- How can two love relationships develop over two-three days while they fend off zombies and struggle to survive? How come Diesel hooks up with a pregnant girl, just like that, and when she dies he acts as if they've been together forever.
- If Keller wanted to kill the kids why did they not just bust up the doors and flood the school with gas and zombies?
- Why did the female Keller agent go Guantanamo on LaShawn? What could possibly be so crucial so she had to break his hand and where did she get the strenght to break his legs with her hands? If she wanted to find the others all she would have to do was walk around a bit.
- Why didn't she notice that they were one guy short when they left the school?
- How come all the kids in the pharmacy had handguns?
Well the questions never end. There seams to have been zero energy going into the script. Some company boss just gave the order to create a zombie show for young people with some key features that would attract them. The story is so full of plot holes and contingency problems that it almosts hurts. To bad really because the basic idea is great.
With that said the show does have a certain appeal so if you leave the brain at the door it is some entertainment to it.
Death Valley (2011)
Oh how I want a season two
Sometimes it is hard to understand how Hollywood works. The super dreary Zombie Nation goes on for years while this spot on zombie comedy gets cancelled after one season. It's been six years and everyones in awhile I catch myself really missing this show. Loved the humor and the gore. Thought the casting was great and the characters really likable. Bring it back please!
