City Slickers II: The Legend of Curly's Gold (1994)
An overlooked sequel.
Is this movie Oscar worthy? No. Is it fun to watch when you've got some time to kill? Yes. City Slickers II might not have the impact and lasting impression the first one has but it's still great in its own right. It's a bit cheesier than the first but there are some genuine laughs to be had.
If you're a fan of the first one you should definitely watch this one and see if you like it. Apparently some people hated it , but I think a lot of that comes from a persons expectations going into this. The first movie was touching and had some great life pointers. This one is something to watch for a good time and to see (most) of the characters you love from the first again. Only true negative I could throw out there is Bruno Kirby not returning for whatever reason. Jon Lovits is a funny addition to the team though.
Give it a shot!
Iron Fist (2017)
Not sure what show the critics have been watching.
The show is good. Like you I read all the critic reviews and the hateful disdain and contempt held towards this show and got discouraged. I decided to give it a shot because the premise itself is cool so surely it can't be completely unwatchable. For the first couple episodes I just kept waiting on the show to get really bad, kept waiting to see what the critics saw and dislike it. Then I realized around the end of episode 3 that I couldn't stop watching the show and couldn't wait to see what happens next just like all the other Netflix Marvel shows.
I'm not sure if the hate is justifiable and I'm not seeing it, even though I can be a pretty harsh critic myself, or if there is some other motive behind the reviews. Right now Netflix's Iron Fist is sitting at 19% on RT. Wow. Are these people getting paid off? Are they going into the show with expectations it will have the same feeling as Luke Cage (which besides being a super hero show is completely different from this)? My best guess is maybe it's "payback" for the whitewashing people have been going on about? What about Full Metal Alchemist? The titular character being played by an Asian instead of a white European which is who the anime is based on? Why is it only bad if miscasts are done in Hollywood than in other countries? I don't know and I don't really care- I'm going to go finish watching Iron Fist now.
Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)
One of those movies that you have to see in theaters!
Excellent!
I went in to this movie with crazy high expectations, which I always try to avoid doing. However, it didn't ruin the movie! I read a ton of reviews beforehand and probably watched each trailer 20 times or more. This movie surpassed all of my expectations. The movie was fun, exciting, and hilarious. I dragged my girlfriend to this one and she loved it also. She likes the latest Marvel movies but didn't seem too thrilled about this Star Wars-esque installment. ALL that changed though :).
When you watch the opening scene you'll know you're in for a good movie.
Once the end credits rolled everyone clapped. It's been a while since I had a movie-going experience like this.
Knight and Day (2010)
Fun
This was a truly fun and humorous flick. Just the right blend of action and comedy. Cameron Diaz and Tom Cruise have great chemistry (stemming from previous projects with each other like Vanilla Sky maybe). The scenes with the two of them (most of the movie of course) were great. I loved the subtle "jabs" the movie took at other spy flicks while still taking itself seriously enough.
It's not going to win an Oscar, but it's definitely a fun movie to go see with friends or on a date. I took a chick with me and we both had a blast. I feel sorry for anyone who's too uptight or jaded by Tom Cruise's personal life and beliefs to enjoy this film.
I do have a couple of beefs with the film. I feel the movie would have been just perfect had it been about 20 minutes shorter. 110 minutes is not that bad but for such a fun movie with quick action; a shorter run time would have had me craving for more. Then again, my movie attention span seems to be getting shorter the older I get. I'm also unsure of how the movie will translate over to home viewing. The film really seemed to benefit from the whole "movie experience." FYI: This little review is coming from someone who has very little tolerance for "bad" films.
Kaubôi bibappu: Cowboy Bebop (1998)
one word... cool
Cowboy Bebop deserves all the praise it receives. This show can be appreciated by almost anyone, regardless of their feelings towards anime in general. I have heard a number of times from people who dislike anime that they really enjoyed these 26 short sessions of brilliance. There are of course a few (very few) episodes that don't measure up well against the others but all in all every episode is entertaining.
Jazz, film noir, the golden age of cinema...I would use these words to describe Cowboy Bebop. To get the feeling of this show, think of movies like Casablanca, Brick, Swingers...you get the point.
It's also worth mentioning this show's dubbed voice-overs are some of the best in all anime (dub voices or original). One of the few I prefer to watch in the English version.
You have to give this one a try
