The Rose Garden (1989)
Worth watcing for acting, though uneven at times.
I think its a film that's worth watching even for its flaws, especially for acting.
In this film Actor Maxmillan Schell gave an really solid profomance, he successfully portrait an character that with relative few words, full of emotion inside, with his eyes and movements.
Sometime the camera works and lighting add to it too, like at when meeting with lawyer only upper part of his face was lit, the scene when the little girl asked about the camps the uneasness on Schell's face and camera angle are great too!
Amazing how he have this range and versatility as an actor, totally different from his lot of energetic and flamboyant characters, even feel a lot different from his already quieter character from the reluctant saint!
Story-wise I think a bit uneven too, especially it seems to want to hint lots of things happening but at the same time little of them resolved.
Though I think what the film emotionaly left audience feel a bit sad and unsettled (especially with a recordings of reason why perpetrators still can't be convicted in the end) is a nice effort! I think it is a called back to what the film want to bring to its audience, that is to look back and think about what actually happened.
So even for the flaws I think it's still worth watching, to see the beautiful actings and be reminded to know and think more!
The Reluctant Saint (1962)
A very unique film and performance from Schell with good comedies in it!!
It's a truly unique film from and for the actor Maximilian Schell in my opinion, it's unbelievable the film only released after the film Judgement at Nuremberg (1961).
Firstable is an character of Italian nationality, though few dialogue, form those you can hear the effort he put into it, depart from his usual accent in fact that stoic often associate with his characters too! I really enjoy his occasional humming and singing to, there's a rough beauty to it!
Second, the facial expressions and his deamoners for this character is pretty wide range and amazing. For playing this character with child's wonder he often have a sort of innocent wide smile on his face, and with that compassionate and curious eyes, full with emotions too! The way he moves, flinching, grab things he forgotten or dropped, move with a bit uncertainty all add to the character pretty well!
Story-wise is a pretty unique one too, it also have good amount of good timing comedy blend into it, but I think this film is already surprising with Macmillan Schell's performance at the first place.
Definitely recommend checking out for any movie viewers!
The Black Hole (1979)
Worth watching, enjoyable!
I think the film is definitely worth checking out! And definitely underrated.
First I think its sets are well done, generous and with lots of variety! The the outside of space ship, you can easily observe its intricate outerier with scaffolding and glass, and some tower structures, for interior there's variety of rooms and locations, like circular contoral pennel extend meters deep, tube system for cart, control room. Colour are great too, colourful and balanced!
As for the story/plot, though it is lose on science even for science fiction in my pinion, I think the characters, overall arc, questions like morality and science and on sentient robots that could be raised and even include some dark elements all make up to it. Even why the film choose pretty literary approach to the black whole itself I think is worth pondering.
So even though it definitely could be batter, but I think with these in consideration it's a film pretty interesting, worth the time! Is still a nice effort for its time and an good attempt to tell a story!
Land of the Giants (1968)
Great series that's worth watching, with memorable episodes!
Though it may not be very hard science fiction or very hard on detail of plot or things like that, I think it's still a good one that's worth a watch!
Apart from cool giant world special effects I also really enjoyed interaction between main characters and their character development.
First on the special effects, I think for it's time it is fabulous, good efforts like giant props with good amount of details and the "continuity" (details) when cuts between giants and little people are made. I especially like the giant camera, it even comes with all of the numbers on it for adjustments.
For character interaction I think is really interesting to see how all characters with different personalities clashes under different circumstances and this difficult life, especially between Mark and Steve and Fitz that always have scheme bruing, without confinement of ranking like Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, there's lots of interesting sometimes hilarious exchange happened!
For character development though sometimes may be episodic or there may not have a very clear arcs but I really enjoy seeing things like how in episodes like Fitz how he choose the team mate over other or how Mark learn to curb his anger and sometime beable to make up with Steve and admit he's not all right.
Lastly, like all of Irwin Allen's series It's quality of episode does have it's up and down, but overall pretty entertaining and even with some great one that's memorable! I think for entertainment it's a nice series!
Time Limit (1957)
Very decent film with powerfull performance from Richard Basehart and open your mind on the genre
Before come to this film I am already watched lots of the films and shows by actor Richard Basehart (ex. Tension, fourteen hours, he walked by nights, voyage.....), already have the fact of he being an powerful actor mind, but man this is another level of powerful and beauty. How he delivers with full range of emotions and all of big and nuances facial expressions are just pure beauty. When combine with the subject matter and as the story progresses it just moved you very deeply.
Maybe in a way I am bias because I am watching it for the actor at first, but I feel it's a truly special one because I haven't feel so moved in a long time. I feel it's a really decent movie also because it has pretty complex argument, it present it through characters very clearly, not deciding and answer for the viewer, and really well structured left you lot to fink and feel after the film end...
Lastly it also open brand new perspective for me
,it changes my view on the war related films, though I do enjoy watching black and white films but sometimes I keep avoiding these types of films for some reason, now I feel I can see why it's a genre that just have anzy potential as others and worthy of consideration for cinema lover and general viewer alike.
