Desederium that's almost hedonistic

I am talking nostalgia, a high you might not know what to do with. I saw this movie months ago and still gush over it. Perhaps it takes a certain type to feel as strongly as I do about this film. If you take yourself seriously, maybe it's not for you. It is quite the fix for those who grow up during a time when the world felt like one big laser tag arena. But it's so much more than that. Apple is one of the best character designs I have seen in a while. Her makeup and hair and wardrobe are simple but create this incredible visual. The action is phenomenal. Japanese-style violence. Not crossing the line, though, in my opinion. I tell people to watch this movie and no one I know has actually done so. It's okay. I can't wait. We can keep this for ourselves until everyone realizes how amazing it is and ruins it-- Boondock Saints...ahem. It's also the only electronic soundtrack I have ever fully purchased. There is a great little musical motif throughout, a simple series of tones which sort of remind me of Close Encounters--and some spring birds who hang around my house. I am saving the second viewing of this for a special time. It's worth cultivating. It's worth watching, you might say.

No. No.

Warning: Spoilers
I am lost over the hype for this film. It's as though they filmed a movie, and then filmed something else, for what was the last fifteen minutes. What's the twist? There was no twist, but plenty of plot holes. I was really hoping they were going to tie it in with the original somehow. They so didn't. There's your spoiler. No, it's not a sequel. It's not really a movie, more of an exercise in bad decision making--by those with money to burn--I'm not even a JJ hater. This movie did not need to happen. The drama in the bunker is simply a waste if it doesn't tie in with the drama above. Those performances were a waste, too. I am so blown away that this got such good reviews. I think what you are seeing is people grasping to this concept that horror is better when it's not horror. Drama... Ugh. Drama can make a horror--or whatever the hell this thing was--great or it can make it...a drama. Damn they screwed this up.

Fooled by good reviews

I made the mistake of not watching the trailer first. It's pretty disconnected and I couldn't convince myself, not once, that I had made the right decision in purchasing this film. I cringe even now. Sigh. The acting was simply not up to par. Lance Henriksen was the only reputable actor out of the cast of four--does that make you feel good about this? And if you don't guess the ending I'm worried about you. So often did this feel like a made for TV movie. The scenes were awkwardly pieced together and the cinematography was not genre appropriate. It looked like a soap opera. And I don't know what was going on with the music and the sound. Even the house was boring. The makeup on the kids was decent. But the ghost kids fail to deliver and were a contrived vehicle. I knew by the end, when a particular minor character was killed off by her own bad driving, that this movie was the biggest mistake I've made in a while--in terms of paying for it. The rating on this one will surely drop. I wouldn't even recommend watching this on Netflix--if it goes.
