Baby Driver (2017)
Cool car chases, but full of plot holes and poor character development
The car chase scenes are great but the rest of this movie leaves a lot to be desired. It really feels like a movie for teenagers. Other than maybe Jamie Fox, the actors turned in lackluster performances. This is the worst I've ever seen from Kevin Spacey.
My wife and I thought this whole film just screamed "millennial" to both of us (even though we are technically millennials ourselves). The hero basically has no personality flaws at all, his relationship with the girl is beyond stupid; and for the most part the "bad guys" have no redeeming qualities. It's just a really stupid movie that pretends to be smart. If not for the great stunt work, this film would be a disaster.
The Departed (2006)
Drawn out mob movie with a few twists
The Departed is loaded with talented actors and I went into it with high expectations. That said, during the last 30 minutes of the movie I just wanted it to end.
It has strong acting, but that's a given considering all the on screen talent. It is too long, the pacing is too slow, and just felt like it was missing something. A lot about the movie felt contrived to me and I left the theater feeling deflated. The love story was predictable, a little weird, and definitely inappropriate considering the characters positions. The film didn't really have a climax, instead there were a series of climactic moments that kept sort of just puttering out and letting me down. The cinematography was boring as well, most of the shots seemed pretty simple and uninteresting. Similarly, the score felt contrived and pedantic. Like some bean counters calculated the songs most likely to impress a 2006 American audience and threw all of them into this film. Overall, I just can't recommend this film to people and I think it is possibly the most overrated film of the decade.
The Lego Movie (2014)
Frenetic start, slow in the middle, very predictable and not funny
I'm the only person I know that didn't love this movie. After hearing all the rave reviews I had high expectations. I had several issues with the film...
-The pacing in this film was very off putting for me. Frenetic start! Character development was weak and things happened very fast for the first 15-20 minutes. It sort of made my head hurt. Then things slowed way down and I found the movie to be pretty boring right until the end.
-The plot line, where a father is taking away his kids legos, kind of irked me and it was obvious from the start he was going to come around by the end of the movie. As a Dad, I also thought it had the potential to undermine my authority with my kid a little.
-The punch lines just weren't that funny. I chuckled a few times but that was it, and all the best jokes were already in the trailers.
-Too much product placement. Lets be honest, the entire move is big ad for Lego. But then they throw in all the other products, and it really made the whole film feel like a giant "get your parents to buy this!" commercial to kids.
So, there it is. My opinion on a very highly rated film that I just didn't enjoy very much.
