The Golden Boy (2023)
So much better than I hoped, truly riveting!
Not sure why this is getting so few reviews, but it's definitely worth the time. The fight footage is fantastic (duh), but much more importantly, the background about La Hoya and the interviews and the insights (from La Hoya as well as his family/partners/kids/business associates) are great. And the story is super interesting - I saw some of his fights on TV years ago, and liked him, but had no idea what was really going on...
Ok, yeah, I'm not completely convinced that even now he's come completely to grips with all that's happened (read: that he's done) in his life based on his character - particularly his treatment of some people close to him - but the fact that he even made this film, and is this honest in it, says a lot. The biggest thing that comes thru is that, for good or for bad, taking risks is always the way to go. I never realized how much he had done that.....
But most importantly, it's just really fun to watch!
Spirited (2022)
I usually hate new musicals (and I write musical comedy lyrics! ;) but this was surprisingly wonderful!
I was kinda dreading watching this - Will Ferrell can be so over the top, the songs in new musicals can be silly and extraneous - but wow, I can't believe how good it was. I cried at the end!
It was super smartly written - lots of clever modern takes on life (and a fair amount of adult humor, but not the kind most kids will catch on to... ;). The characters are wonderful - Will Ferrell is just great as a low-key ex-Scrooge, and Ryan Reynolds is a great foil for him. But best of all, the story is just so SURPRISING, you never see the ending coming. Lovely!
Can't believe I'm saying this, but it was terrific!
Btw, don't skip the credits, there's a gem there....
Julia (2022)
Absolutely wonderful!
What a surprise and a delight! I'm in the middle of episode 4 now, and the performances, the behind-the-scenes dirt, the food & wine, wow, it's just lovely!!! I'll write more when I'm done - it's so good I don't want to stop! ;)
Instant Family (2018)
Loved it, surprisingly
A bit cheesy but also warm, funny, inspiring and memorable
