Bhaag Milkha Bhaag (2013)
The True Story of The Flying Sikh" which became A Masterpiece of Indian Cinema
Bhag Milkha Bhag, the original story of "The Flying Sikh", Milkha Singh is inspiring, fascinating, gripping, emotional, personal yet universal. The way Farhan Akhtar played the character is outstanding. But, not only Farhan Akhtar, but also Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra (Director), Prasoon Joshi (Script-writer and Lyricist) and everybody has done a great job. The way, it pictured every detail of The Legend's Life is unprecedented. And each important episode has given birth to a historical subplot. From featuring India-Pakistan partition to capturing the erase of the political borders, it is not mere a biopic of an Indian Athlete, who wins medals for India, but it became an epic and witnessed a turmoiled time-span through the eyes of Milkha Singh aesthetically and sensitively. The best part of the storyline is it showed beautifully that Milkha Singh never runs for medals. Instead, he runs for something else, something more personal, something beyond the competition titles. Sometimes he runs for a mug of milk, sometimes for the Indian Blazer, sometimes to forget his failure and overcome his weaknesses, sometimes to overcome his traumatized childhood. It showed how a sportsman can become an icon of a nation and how a legendary sportsman fights and wins his inner-battle simultaneously. It shows, how a Legend uses his nightmares, haunted memories, troubled grown-up times, failures, wounds and scars to make him more strong, more hard-working, more determined, more confident, more focused, more disciplined and more patriotic. It also showed that greatness is another name of politeness, humbleness, modesty and giving proper respect to all those seniors and gurus, who helped the man to become what he is today. The film interpreted Milkha Singh's life and achievements such a way, that it proved again the famous universal truth, "It doesn't matter where you come from, it matters where you go". On-a-whole, Bhag Milkha Bhag is a masterpiece, a movie of a lifetime and a must watch for everyone.
Talaash (2012)
Outstanding, Mesmerizing, Spellbound and WOW !!!!!
Before expressing my views on the film, first of all I like to say that TALAASH is a completely original film. It has no similarity with Kahani, Shutter Island, Identity, The Sixth Sense or Basic Instinct 2.
The movie opens with a car accident, causing death of a famous film-star. A police enquiry is called and Police Officer Surjan Singh Shekhawat (AAMIR KHAN) is appointed to investigate the case. As his investigation goes deeper, the mystery goes much deeper. What appeared as a simple car accident turns out to be a murder mystery. During investigation Inspector Shekhawat also has to face his gloomy past, that is the accidental death of his only son. The incident snatched all happiness from his married life. He stops communicating with his wife (Rani Mukherjee), which leads her to live an isolated life. One day during investigations, he met Rosy (Kareena Kapoor), a hooker, who makes the mystery much more opaque.
Reema Kagti's direction is mind-blowing. There are some path-breaking, unique aspects of this thriller. Although, the film is set in the backdrop of Mumbai's Red Light Area, it does not contain any item number or so-called the demand of the script labelled love-making scenes. The main investigating officer (AAMIR KHAN) does not hold his service revolver, at least for one single time. Even, there is only one short chasing scene, which also does not involve Inspector Shekhawat. Though, she made the suspense drama such a beautiful way, which will give the audience the perfect edge-of-the-seat experience with full of twists and turns. It is the psychological subtlety of the direction and razor sharp editing (Editor: Anand Subaya), that compels the audience to play the guessing games, till the outstanding climax.
Apart from a very well written, gripping, a totally new kind of psychological thriller (Full credit goes to Reema Kagti and Zoya Akhtar), its main asset is of course AAMIR KHAN. Only He can play such a complex character (Surjan Singh Shekhawat) with absolute brilliance, full perfection and without any mannerism. That's why he is known as Mr. Perfectionist. He is just The Best.
Rani Mukherjee as Roshni, (without make-up) as a mother, who suffers from the grief of loosing her only son and as a wife, who is living a lonely, troubled married life, also performed very well. And, Kareena Kapoor as Rosy is in her seductive best. Her mysterious dialogues (Dialogues: Fahan Akhtar; Additional Dialogue: Anurag Kashyap) added an extra-dimension to her character. Her chemistry with AAMIR KHAN (specially in the second half) is awesome.
Nawazuddin Siddiqui also delivers a powerful performance as Tehmur. Raj Kumar Yadav is also done a good character acting as Devrath Kulkarni, assistant of Surjan Singh Shekhawat. Shernaz Patel played an important role beautifully.
The other main character of this movie is the city that never sleeps, Mumbai. The way it captures Mumbai Underbelly (specially the night and late night scenes), is unprecedented and simply superb (Special Credit goes to cinematographer Mohanan).
Another plus point of this movie is music. Ram Sampath has done a great job. From the murkier Muskaanein Jhooti Hai, Hona Hai Kya to the subtle Jee Le Zaraa, Jiya Lage Na and Laakh Duniya Kahe, the Javed Akhtar penned songs perfectly fits with the genre of the film. Background score is equally intriguing.
One a whole, TALAASH is a beautiful film made with full aesthetics and perfection to take the audience in a different level through the smoggy lanes of their minds. It's a must watch, not only for every AAMIR KHAN fan, but also for every movie lover.
