Spirit Halloween (2022)
So disappointed
These are the consequences of IT and Stranger Things being so commercially successful. Every film studio now wants to make a "a group of goofy kids on the brink of going to high school get caught up in something spooky" film, and they always forget to add anything else remotely interesting to the movie. IT and Stranger Things work because each kid is unique in some way. They can't ALL be the annoying one. Even if I was able to look past the annoying main characters, there's not much to like about this movie. The animatronics are vastly underutilized and serve more as a commercial for the real product than an actual plot element. I'm sure if you're a kid trying to get into horror then this is slightly entertaining, similar to Goosebumps, but it feels so soulless and empty. This would've been so much better had they gone for an R rating and an older set of main characters in a legitimately high-stakes story.
American Horror Stories: Milkmaids (2022)
No real conclusion, but interesting premise
These reviews had me expecting something as bad as the Santa episode from season 1, but the writing isn't THAT bad this time around. The last 10 minutes are rushed and I think an extra 5 minutes showing the consequences of what happened would've made this really solid overall. Looking at details about further episodes in the season it sounds like there may be a part 2 episode, so I'll hold out until then to see if it pays off the way I wanted this episode to, but overall it's not bad. It's leagues more interesting than the previous week's episode, at the very least.
What If...?: What If... Doctor Strange Lost His Heart Instead of His Hands? (2021)
How will they top this?
This was an episode I was excited about after the first trailer, despite knowing nothing except there were two Stephens. I didn't expect it to be one of the most emotionally charged things done in the MCU. The other episodes set up disastrous consequences near the end, but this episode went full speed and gave us the tragic ending. Also, the animation is phenomenal. Doctor Strange is one of the most visually appealing MCU films and it absolutely translates well to animation. This is the best episode so far, and I hope we get more gut punch episodes like this in the near future.
American Horror Stories: Game Over (2021)
Not as bad as it's made to be
Look, I get it. We are tired of Ryan Murphy milking the defining season of AHS, but this is far from the worst episode this season. It is extremely self congratulatory, which got obnoxious pretty fast, but I'd rather have a continuation of a story (doesn't require 30 minutes to establish) than another 40 minute episode where the good stuff is saved for the last 5 minutes and gets rushed over. Compared to the other two Murder House episodes this one isn't as good, but it's certainly not the worst American Horror Stories episode by a long shot.
American Horror Stories: Feral (2021)
Nice premise, poor execution
The running theme throughout the show so far seems to be they take an interesting idea, then try to cram it into 40 minutes and have it be satisfying. The only episode so far that has done this right was Ba'al (the murder house episodes were good too but there were two episodes so I don't count those). I like the set up for this episode. Missing people in the national parks is one of my favorite horror subgenres. The explanation for the creatures came at about the time that made sense narratively, but then there were only 5 minutes to finish the episode. That's not nearly enough time to have a satisfying conclusion. The twist is easy to call from a mile away, and it is glossed over too fast for it to hold any emotional impact. I don't understand why the creative team has to limit these to 40 minutes. I'd rather have each story take up two episodes and be fleshed out than the same experience each week of getting hyped for an episode that has inadequate pacing.
American Horror Stories: Ba'al (2021)
The highlight of the series so far
The first two episodes were total fan service, but I didn't mind because Murder House is my favorite season so I'm always happy to revisit. The next two episodes were very disappointing.
Ba'al is better than all the predecessors. It's an original idea, and while you may be able to call the twist before it happens, it's still a refreshing departure from what to expect with the show. Billie Lourd is going to become as essential to the AHS franchises as Sarah Paulson and Jessica Lange, she's always good in her roles.
Incredible Crew (2012)
Why is CN doing this to us?
Cartoon Network has gone nowhere but down over the last 5 or so years. This show is so ridiculously annoying. My brother won't stop watching it, and I have to hear it all the time. The things these kids say and do are not even remotely entertaining. They think they are being funny with the whole "Burping Grandma" bit, but they are just being so freaking annoying. None of the sketches are funny. They are all either really stupid or really annoying, or both! This is honestly no better than anything Disney has released over the past 5 years. If anything, it is worse than any of that "canned laughter" crap. I hope that Cartoon Network sees that this show is trash and gets rid of it.
