Death on the Nile (2022)
Watch the original 70's film.
As much as i like French and Saunders they were no match for Bette Davies and Maggie Smith in the 70's version, there's was a sensational double act.. I know it's a tad churlish to compare but...
I do find Branagh over rated.
I was in the cinema watching it wishing I was watching the old movie.
That's no good is it... I hope I dont get that when im watching Salem's Lot.
The scenery is gorgeous to look at though.
The Changeling (1980)
Why all the hype?
I love horror movies from the 70's and 80's and seeing this was on amazon and all the really good reviews i thought i would give it a go.
It has atmosphere i'll give it that and the house sure looks spooky so considering it's a haunted house that's a good thing.
The plot is interesting enough and there is some scary scenes such as the seance but not enough of them.
It's more of a thriller than a horror which is fine but by the reviews people are either really easily scared as it's not scary. It's more like an old fashioned ghost story.
Normal People (2020)
Love in the time of lockdown
So incredibly moving, have tissues at the ready , love will tear you apart
White House Farm (2020)
In the age of netflix we dont want drawn out shows, we like to binge
One of the books the series is based on is called rainbow's end, i feel that's what it will be when the last episode is shown, i dont want to watch a series for weeks on end anymore im not living in the 1980's.
Saying that the acting is good, a great solid cast, it would of been better in 4 hours rather than 6
Mum (2016)
So touching and funny
The writing and acting in this show are superb, i hope they do more at some point
Pet Sematary (2019)
Not as good as the first film
I was dissapointed, the movie feels rushed and they missed out so many elements that made the book one of Stephen Kings finest.
The Semetery is built on an old native american burial ground yet that is even hardly mentioned, the first film did that job so much better, it lacked atmosphere, it wasn't in the least bit creepy, and in the book Louis Creed goes completely mad trying to bring his kid back to life and then his wife, at the heart of the book is his grief at losing his family and wanting to bring them back no matrer what eben though he know's it's wrong, this is what makes the book so frightening and this movie had none of that.
The first film i think was alot better than this and even that was nowhere near as good as the book
Us (2019)
Not a patch on "Get out'
This movie had so much potential, great actors, nice music, good idea but far too many plot holes and it doesn't make a whole lot of sense.
It's not sure what it wants to be as a movie, first it's a home invasion then is kind of like a zombie film and that bit drags on and on, it's a shame as could of been so much better but really the script let's it down bigtime, the movie just felt rushed
La cabina (1972)
keep ur foot in the door
i was lucky enough to catch la cabina when it was shown on a Saturday night in england sometime in the 80,s and to this day it,s one of the most disturbing film,s i,ve ever seen. much of the film i could not remember so have enjoyed reading the comments on IMDb. shame there is no DVD,but i feel some films are best left to the imagination and i,m sure this is truly one of them.
i remember the man looking so trapped and helpless and the people outside the box ,looking at him so bemused. and then the truck that drives him away for what seems like forever but the end,, which i totally wasn,t expecting is one of the most frightening scenes in movie history i actually did,nt go in a phone box for a couple of years after
Grease (1978)
it,s got move but no meaning
i saw grease tonight for the first time in years when it came out i loved this film.i was 7. 25 years later and it,s still worth watching. as a musical i think cabaret is far greater but grease is fun so let,s not take it too seriously. i think cheese is the word though not grease
i think the dance contest scene is incredible. it looks like it was done in one long take which i,m sure wasn,t the case. the editing of the sequence blew me away. everything was razor sharp..the band, the music ,the dancing how it,s all built up is fantastic, then of course we get to see travolta really move, because let,s face it he was always going to win the contest. it worked out well he danced with cha cha because she was a much better dancer than sandy anyway.
the beauty school drop out sequence is another scene that is choreographed brilliantly and sung to perfection by frankie valli and your the want that i want at the end is an all time movie classic
travolta is brilliant in this film talk about camp, he,s like a cartoon and i think he was smart enough to play it like that, that show,s class
the songs are the best things about grease
olivia newton john was good casting a terrific voice, as was stockard channing who had all the best lines. and good cameo,s from sid ceaser and eve arden
i liked the pink ladies but apart from kenickie the other t birds are morons!
Salem's Lot (1979)
the classic vampire film
Salem's lot has everything.when i first saw this film as a kid it blew me away.
from the moment the terrific score and titles come in this film does not stop. i saw the uncut version over two nights when it first aired in england and for a made for TV movie in this genre it's never been surpassed. i think Salem's lot's strengths are it doesn't go for blood and gore and depends on atmosphere and is all the better for it. Stephen king is the master horror teller and Salem's lot is a spooky story. even the name of the town sounds scary! the house is as scary as the bates motel and Barlow and straker(an excellent James mason) are very menacing
it does take a little while to get going but when the first boy disappears it starts to get really spooky. both of the window scenes are very chilling and really well done. and the scenes with mike(ryerson)in the cemetery and when he's in the chair are very scary. i think they could of got a better actor than David soul though i'm still not sure if that's because i was not a starsky and hutch fan. this film is quite old fashioned in it's style and i wish they'd make horror films like this today. later i saw the shorter version and it was completely ruined so make sure to see the longer version. i just bought the DVD and sure it looks dated now but it still packs a punch.
I, Robot (2004)
less irritating than ur usual will
i robot is a really interesting thought provoking film. it had a good plot, great cgi and moved at a terrific pace.
the sonny character was very clever and brilliantly voiced by alan tudyk who gave the robot so much emotion, also bridget moynahan was good until she got her gun out at the end. is she a phychiatrist or a marine?? and here on lies the problem with this film why,, because it,s a summer blockbuster do we have to be treated to will smith single handedly saving the world. if those 200 or so robot,s wanted to kill him in that tunnel(the worst part of the film)i,m sure they would of done so,the scene was a joke why do the studio,s think we want this, i know i don't i want intelligent action and this wasn,t . i,m not that bothered about action if there,s a great story and this was but it kept turning into independence day and it so didn,t need to .
maybe one day robot,s will be making the film,s we want to watch let,s hope so.
ps product placement is getting out of hand
Flash Gordon (1980)
what do u mean flash gordon approach
i was disappointed to find flash gordon had such a poor rating flash gordon is a fantastic film period, after reading the bad reviews i wonder how some people can enjoy a film while analyzing it so intently.
flash gordon is tacky like an amusement park but it,s one hell of a ride. the acting,s camp and cheesy as is the dialogue but u know ,it,s a comic book. the art direction and costumes are fabulous and the queen soundtrack is just killer queen!
this film is high camp and all the better for it... to often people compare films to other films and i think flash gordon has suffered negatively from this. of all the 80,s sci fi films this one,s still one of my favourites because you get the impression all of the actors are having a ball at the sheer ridiculousnes of it all!! but when all is said and done they made a terrific film
flash ahhh leader of the universe!!!
Jaws (1975)
my first fear
jaws is still one of the most powerful films of all time because it works on every level and is what inspiring film making should be about. i was astonished when i found out that Spielberg was only 27 during the making of jaws. I was only 5 when jaws was released so i saw the film later, the poster is so amazing it has blockbuster written all over it when i saw the film it really delivered. i have now seen jaws countless times and still i admire the acting, the score, the story and of course the shark! and these days i,m a lot less scared of going in the water! and to all the people that slag of the sequels jaws 2 was a worthy sequel and though not in the same class as jaws was still a good film. yes the others were terrible
