All My Life (2020)
Very, very moving despite the generic filmmaking!
When I first saw this trailer not knowing this was from a real life interracial couple, I had to do a double take. Very rarely you would see a asian man in a lead role other than mostly in action movies. I thought this was very refreshing to see and certainly helps the fair representation for asians. Besides the fair representation, the acting and the cinematography was professionally shot. The one main complaint I have unfortunately is the pacing of the story. The story felt a little rushed and the characters didn't seem developed enough to be believable (almost feels like you are watching a educational or afterschool special). Which is kind of a shame because this was based on real life couple (and they even show the real life couple at the end before the credits).
Also, one thing I found interesting about this movie (I don't know why) reminded me of so much of Dragon the Bruce Lee Story (Bruce Lee biopic inspired by his wife Linda). I understand that the actress Jessica Rothe in All My Life talked for hours with the real life woman (Jennifer Carter) she is portraying. In both movies, it's interesting they have an interracial couple with an asian man and both involve a white woman, and they both have a tragedy and both Bruce Lee and Solomon Chau liked what they were doing and were very good at it.
A sad movie but I definitely recommend this because it's a sweet story and something like this could happen to anyone.
Bill & Ted Face the Music (2020)
Better than I thought!
I am not sure why the reviews on this on IMDB are not that high, I thought this was a very funny movie. What I really enjoyed about this film is that they weren't trying so hard to be funny. Bill and Ted characters were just being themselves. Even though the actors are older, and the acting isn't the same youthful 80's/90's look, there is a moral of the story that really resonates with what's happening in the world now. The plot isn't really unique but it's very sweet. I agree with the critics, this is the best Bill and Ted movie and I'm glad I watched it.
Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi (2017)
Not what I thought it was going to be but I loved it!
I disagree with some of the reviews on here and I felt I had to write about this movie. I don't think it's as bad as some people made this out to be. It sort of mirrors the original Trilogy, like Empire. Some people didn't like Empire strikes back, complaining it was too dark. I'm not one of those die hard Star Wars fanatics that wait in long lines desperate to see a new Star Wars film. I am not sure why some of you are complaining a movie's direction when there were so many likable, interesting characters, I get it, it has a darker theme compared to Force Awakens. What I like about Rian Johnson's direction of Star Wars was that it was not meant to be produced in a way to make star war fans angry (I actually felt Luca's prequels were far worse). There were many similarities with past Star Wars movies with this one. Many of the characters in this movie were so ordinary and end up as unlikely heroes and you really feel for the characters.
Johnson also said, he wanted to open up the possibilities for more Star Wars stories in the future.
I also understand where fans of Star Wars is coming from with legendary characters like Luke who ends up as a ordinary hermit on a isolated island and many feel it seems a let down but I feel it's normal for characters to end up like that. In a way, I feel this is more realistic in that your life is full of ups and downs and not everything turns out the way you want it to. I think if the movie was taking a traditional direction with Luke as this all powerful mentor of Rey and Rey's background explained related to this so and so's character would've have been too predictable. And even though there wasn't a traditional love story in there somewhere (although there sort of was a interesting dynamic with Finn and the Mechanic Rose Tico), I think many who petitioned with the ending should get a grip. There were many likable, comedic, characters and interesting special effects (though some parts a little too CG) and even though it wasn't a perfect movie for everyone, it did pay homage to past Star Wars movies with interesting plot twists that makes you want to see more.
The Hangover Part II (2011)
Boring, derivative of the first one!
I didn't want to see this (judging by the reviews), I only went to see it because I was with my friends, I wanted to see X- Men first class film. The reviews were right, Hangover 2 just seems like the filmmakers were running out of ideas. Most of the humor seems like they were done for just shock value (like they were forced), the element of surprise wasn't there, and the plot was just like the first one except it takes place in Thailand.
I thought the actors were likable but because of the script, they seemed to be dumbed down. And Ken Jeong as Mr. Chow wasn't as funny like the first one, I didn't laugh very much. Disappointing film despite commercial success.
Gulliver's Travels (2010)
Not as bad as I thought
For a Jack Black film, I didn't think this movie was all that bad. The movie is not groundbreaking by any means, and it's not really like the book, but I was quite moved by Jack Black's performance. There were some sentimental scenes that you can't stop feeling sorry for the character. I also enjoyed the humor and I thought the supporting cast members were funny as well. I'm not sure why some people are complaining that the comedy is crude even though the film took out a lot of the toilet humor from the book. But whatever, for what it's worth, I thought the movie was actually fun to watch (even though this film has a certain target audience).
G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra (2009)
Just pure mindless entertainment
I grew up watching and loving G.I. Joe animated series because they had such great stories, characters, and humor. I found the live action to be disappointing. Tatum is way too young to portray an iconic character like Duke and cobra commander didn't have that comedic charisma that made the animated series so humorous. Also, the acting was cheesy and some of the actors way overacted especially Dennis Quaid as General Hawk, which I was kind of shocked to see because Dennis Quaid is a great actor and Tatum as Duke was nothing like the animated character. He doesn't have the charisma like the animated Duke, and Tatum sounded like he was just talking. Special effects were the only area that was alright, they were actually fun to watch, but that's all this film seemed cracked up to be, just pure mindless entertainment sort of like the Transformers live action flicks.
Where the Wild Things Are (2009)
Too dang weird
My friend suggested renting this film, and it looked interesting because I remember reading the story when I was a kid. Both my friend and I had a tough time understanding the style of filmmaking for this movie. It appears the filmmakers tried so hard to produce an artistic and abstract style (which I do support) that seemed like it was marketed for kids but it has adult theme. The characters are so deep and weird that it's difficult to be entertained with nonsensical adventure and gloomy cinematography. Even the 3D animated characters are animated so super realistically (sort of like Final Fantasy: The Spirits within), that they're facial expressions don't seem to be animated and alive. I also felt the melancholy soundtrack was annoying after a while. And who are the intended audience? It's too depressing for kids and too nonsensical and boring for adults.
The Spy Next Door (2010)
Fun entertaining movie
I don't know why this movie doesn't have a higher score, but I was very entertained with the family humor and emotional acting. Even Jackie Chan speaking in English was actually pretty good and funny especially when he says the word "Frakenstein." This is a family film, and it's what I expected of a fun family entertainment. Some people are expecting an action packed comedy with martial arts all because of Jackie Chan, but it's not meant to be just a martial arts film. What I love about this movie is we see Jackie Chan in a father type role which we aren't used to seeing in his films. I like how emotional the characters get and how cool Jackie Chan is playing a role besides a martial artist.
On a side note, I think some people didn't like this movie because it wasn't adult enough like his other films, but this movie could almost be rated G. I didn't see any scary scenes and even the bad guys were not scary. The only thing that I notice that would make it PG was some mild adult language and action scenes, that's about it.
Ewoks: The Battle for Endor (1985)
I love this movie
I didn't think the first ewok movie was terrible like someone said, (both movies were unique in their own way) but I think Battle for Endor is a little better because the story is darker than the first one. I used to watch the ewok movies growing up, and I loved it. I don't know why, but for some reason, every time I watch an ewok movie, I end up watching the whole thing.
In both Ewok movies, I like the simplicity and irony of the characters and the creative way the characters solve problems (at one point wicket builds a glider to escape when he and cindel were stuck on a cliff). There were some interesting characters in Battle for Endor, like that little creature that runs really fast.
Even though the effects aren't as good as the new star wars movies, I think anyone can enjoy watching these because the stories are so simple and very touching. You really care for the characters and it's too bad George Lucas's new Star Wars movies aren't like that!
