Oppenheimer (2023)
Three average movies, combined into an unsatisfying film.
So the first third is so strangely cut and with such poor dialogue that it feels more like a trailer for a film. The second part is a classic action packed "let's build a thing!" Which at least gives us a moment of satisfaction from finally seeing the bomb do its thing. Ultimately disappointing as it's a bit of a fizzer. The final part is just a government bureaucratic drama that was so boring and pointless I wanted to die.
Let's put aside the fact that Nolan not only seems to never have had sex with a woman, or the fact that he cannot write a female character that has a greater depth than a puddle. The fact that he couldn't even bring himself to allow even say 10% of the masse of background characters to be women was just mind blowing to me. Especially when we know historically there were many women involved.
There were some parts that were genuinely beautiful and his effects with sound and the times he tried to visualise the thoughts and theories of quantum physics were captivating. But again, it just didn't combine into something solid. There was endless time shifting back and forth but the benefit of it was lost on me. It added almost nothing to it other than confusion. But I guess it was something to do while we waited and waited and waited for it to be over.
Deconstructing Karen (2022)
Critical viewing for all white women
The reviewers here claiming this is "abusive" or "bullying" or "violent" really REALLY need to get a grip. Try and see what actual violence is and see how vile the comparisons to this really are.
This film and the reactions to it are such an example of the dangers of white women, more so often, liberal white women who can't see their own racism.
I was one of those women until I was called out and it transformed me. If you are uncomfortable then you're moving in the right direction. And if you just give up and let these incredible, generous women of colour, show you the way, you'll find a new power and a new path.
The two women of colour who feature in this doc are so full of grace to extend such a hand to women who are often much more interested in maintaining their delusion than actually WORKING. It's amazing. It's moving and it should be required viewing.
Deadloch (2023)
Great! Hope they give it some time to develop
I'm getting "women aren't funny" vibes from these negative reviews. Which is of course not surprising but irritating nonetheless. Small town crime with a mix of drama and comedy that I always enjoy. I love all the weird women who aren't there for looks. How refreshing. The tone and mix of characters is great. Nice and snappy and hope it will get some time to grow. Really good to see SOMETHING Australian that isn't a crappy reality tv show. I can't speak to if it's all a stole idea of someone else but it feels like something that if it was in the US would get a huge crowd. Hope the old tall poppy choppers don't get their hands on it.
Gloriavale: New Zealand's Secret Cult (2022)
Three generations of victims
People who join cults don't join a cult. They try to do something to help people and live a good life. The leaders turn that desire into a method of gaining wealth and power. The people at Gloriavale are good people who need help. The leaders need to be jailed. The film is a beautiful and tragically heartbreaking picture inside a group of people victimised by greedy men brutalising the bible for personal gain. The filmmakers created a sensitive and complex picture of how high control groups like this develop and protect the leaders. I hope they are helped and this cult is broken up. Any negative reviews here are obviously from people trying to protect the leaders who are violating the basic human rights of hundreds of people. Just tragic.
The Rehearsal (2022)
Exploitative, repulsive and in no way funny
I expect the stans of this guy will come for this review like they have others. I don't see how taking people with very obvious issues (autism etc) and manipulating them under some quasi intellectual inversion of "reality tv" is interesting and it's without a doubt not funny. I'm stunned anyone with a stitch of empathy or understanding of mental health issues or neurodivergence would think this horror show is funny. I was repulsed.
Midnight Mass (2021)
Great but Samantha Sloyan is FIRE!!!
She outshines the entire cast. Amazing. Churchlady gone mad and I'm here for it. I'm so impressed. Great show generally. Would have liked a little less "this is the meaning of religion or is it?" chatter, padded it out too much and it would have been sharper without it.
Rutherford Falls (2021)
Slow burn. It has so much potential.
It reminds me a bit of Schitts Creek. If the producers are brave they'll let it keep going for a few more seasons. I want to see everyone be more "them" for more time. I want to see it distill more. You can't watch this show just for some easy brainless laughs and not think. I think that's what people are complaining about. They have to think. Go get some Big Bang blah for that. This is smart and thoughtful and beautifully structured and is a great grounding for a multi-seasonal thing. I hope they let loose with a bit more edge but not too much. It's feel good and I love it. Short shiny eps at the end of the night. I hope they do a second season at LEAST.
