Hotel Babylon (2006)
Best UK TV series in decades !
A friend of mine said I should watch "Hotel babylon". I was a bit reluctant because I have seen so many contemporary TV series and most are too hi tech for my taste. I love 60s and 70s TV, but I decided to give it a go. SO GLAD I followed my friend's advice because that is a bloody good series. The stories grab you immediately. You get to know the characters and they grow on you. Some characters leave the show in the third series but the scripts are so strong you keep watching it. Bravo BBC for releasing a total winner again ! FULL MARKS.
Hunters (2020)
Not as bad as people here decribe it !
It is entertainment. In this case call it Nazi-exploitation but there are many movies with this theme. The only thing that was wrong are the so called "humor" bits and the "Staying Alive" sequence. The action scenes are good and yes there is a DC comics feeling about it all... Don't take this too seriously and watch it the way they wanted to make it. Lena Olin, once a beauty ("Romeo is bleeding") is aging bad. At first I didn't even recognize her.
Star Trek Into Darkness (2013)
NOT Star Trek: the Matrix meets the Terminator
Just watched this piece of crap. Except for the names of the main characters this has nothing to do with the original Star Trek franchise, nor the Roddenbery vision.
Completely humorless, no real interaction between the main characters and computer graphics to the max. JJ Abrams should be banned from touching it (oh and Tim Burton as well).
Yes it's fast moving, but the characters are completely lost in the special effects and over-the-top background, in fact they look like miniatures !
I usually get a warm smile on my face when I see one of the original members of the series, but in this case not. WHY Nimoy was used in this movie I can't answer. He surely did it for the money, even in a cameo role that has no meaning to the story.
What I loathed was the fact that they used the ending of "The Wrath of Khan", although this time with Kirk 'sacrifcing' himself and Spock the one on the outside. It misses the effect it had with the original cast members. Why they took this great scene and 'raped' it is beyond my understanding.
I'd rate it "0" but 1 is the lowest rate. If they're so fond of computer effects, make not a new one BUT... use the faces of the original series through the much loved computer graphics !
Even the webseries "Star Trek: Phase II" is better than this movie. At least that series has heart, remained true to the original format and is obviously done with greatest care and LOVE for what Gene Roddenberry created.
Cease to Exist (2007)
Seen it all before
The connection between Dennis Wilson and Charles Manson is not really focused. It's all about Manson leading up to the Tate murders. Seen it all before and there are better docs about this topic. Manson was in fact after Doris Day's son Terry Melcher and supposedly killed Tate out of frustration he couldn't find him. For years he and Wilson lived in fear. The only interesting thing about this doc is that it shows the many faces (literally) of Manson. Bearded, long hair, no beard to bald. Also members of his group were interviewed. It seems they are still behind Charley. Polanski is only seen briefly in the press conference which took place after the murder.
