Chimp Empire (2023)
Well, chimps are not THAT interesting after all
A very beautifully shot series with incredible atmosphere and scenery. The music is also beautiful and emotional, although sometimes it is a little low burning and boring. But this is true to the whole series. A feature-length film would have worked better, because it makes healthy barriers to the storyline. This series is waaay too long and it doesn't do much with its runtime. We see chimps resting, grooming, resting, looking around, resting, hunting monkeys (3 times, and in all 3 times we don't see much of the actual hunt just jumping monkeys and chimps and the canopy), quarreling with the rival group (we don't see much either: mainly very angry chimps and some bush moving around). The "Chimpanzee" episode of Dynasties worked much much better. Also it didn't introduce 30 characters so the viewer could concentrate on the protagonist. The many characters of Chimp Empire feels samey - the characters don't develop and although this is not mandatory of a nature documentary, it would have been better if they did in 3 and a half hours.
I think this series proves that these fan favourite animals like chimps, lions, elephants etc are not suitable for long running times. They are simply not that complex and interesting for someone who is not obsessed with the particular species. Nature documentaries should focus more on showing biodiversity rather than making the same films about the same famous animal species every few years.
Hidden Wonders of Europe (2022)
Interesting species, bad editing, horribly over-dramatic music
Could have been an interesting series. Europe offers many curious species to film which this series tries to present but in the worst way possible. The episodes have no beginning and no end. Starts right with an animal, and ends without any epilogue. The editing cannot be more American. Scissoring together completely fake scenes sometimes, like when the golden eagle "kills" a marmot - what actually happens is a tame eagle catches a dead white rabbit offscreen. The music editing is also in a very bad shape. Even a small quarrel between two kingfishers have tense battle music. Come on, this is ridiculous. The music track sometimes changes completely within a few seconds.
Tiny Creatures (2020)
The cinematography is NOT stunning!
Unbearably bad. Not even a nature documentary, just a stupid lookalike. The whole series is staged with stories so dumb, it looks like it was written by an 8-year-old while playing with his animal figures. Many praise the cinematography... Well, it looks good, but only if it was an over-dramatised TV commercial. So no, it's also bad.
Spare your time and watch some Attenborough shows. Really, they are miles better, more educational, more fun with waaaay better cinematography than this piece of garbage. And those shows are about real animals in the WILD, not some pets pushed around by the crew. Really, this is like how they made documentaries 70+ years ago when everything was staged and animals were kicked off from cliffs for dramatic scenes.
