Russian Doll (2019)
Great acting, cool storyline.
This series hooks you in the first episode. I binge watched them all back to back and was disappointed there were only 8 episodes.
The character Nadia is acted superbly by Natasha Lyonne, who is someone you can warm to immediately despite her obvious flaws which are explored as the series progresses.
The series goes from being very good in the first few episodes to being superb with the introduction of Alan, played by Charlie Barnett. Both characters suddenly realise they need purpose when they find each other and it makes for an exciting pairing as they both figure out what has happened to them before time as they know starts to run out.
The show is tied up beautifully with Nadia and Alan making peace with their respective pasts and the final episode pushes them both forward after they finally figure out how to cheat death.
This is Netflix at its best. The show was actually nearly missed by me (for now at least) as it popped up momentarily when I booted up my TV and quickly disappeared, but I was luckily able to catch the name before it disappeared back into the algorithm.
I'd love to see both characters again together but not sure if they'll commission another season or whether it'd work outside the premise of this season. Natasha Lyonne is a huge talent and I've been a fan of her since watching the American Pie films many years ago....
Superman III (1983)
Nostalgia makes it better.
I grew up on the Christopher Reeve films and this was a favourite as there's a lot of screen time as Superman in it.
I like Henry Cavill, however the last two appearances (BvS:DoJ & JL) were very poor.
The original films, this one in particular are more in keeping with DC Superman and this film is one that I can sit down with my two kids (3&4 years) and it holds their attention, makes them whoop with joy and root for Superman and all he stands for.
The set pieces and hero scenes are great, the bad Superman V Clark Kent sequence is particularly good and the lighthearted scenes fit perfectly with the story, the leaning tower of Pisa souvenir sellers in particular!
Definitely underrated and unfairly so.
The Cloverfield Paradox (2018)
What's not to understand?
I watched this movie and then read the reviews on here.
Really puzzled me that people did not understand the plot or the premise of the film. It was fairly basic and easy to follow. It wasn't the greatest space disaster movie I've ever watched but it was watchable. Most of the characters were relatable and I warmed to them, particularly Chris O'Dowd who had some of the best dialogue - Best line of the film as O'Dowds' recently severed arm writes a message to the crew about cutting open a recently deceased crew member "what are you talking about arm?" - literally laughed out loud at this.
If people couldn't understand that strange things were going on due to the crew finding themselves in an alternative universe whilst trying to figure out a way to fix things and get home then I'm afraid it's more to do with the general malaise that is endemic in today's population and not flaws in the screenplay.
