Nefarious (2023)
Gary Oldman like performance from Flannery
I knew Sean Patrick Flannery was a good actor but he's always flown under the radar, and quite frankly not given the accolades he is due. When I saw this I was stunned. He completely deserves the Academy Award for Best Actor but probably won't even be nominated. His performance left me stunned (in a good way) but also 'shook'. It stays with you after you leave the theater.
I don't want to give anyway any spoilers so I will say some of the plot twists are outstanding and I don't consider myself an obtuse movie watcher. I thought one thing was going to happen and it ended up being something else entirely.
The whole movie took place on a set built in Oklahoma to look like a prison, so if you're the type of movie viewer that doesn't like plots played out in a solo location..The British movie Exam (2009) is an example then this may not be for you.
Also, I agree with the previous reviewer who said the actor who played the Psychiatrist sent in to evaluate him on the final day of his stay of execution was also fantastic. I'd never seen him before. If you enjoyed The Exorcist from the 1970s, this is a modern day version without an actual exorcism performed or the theatrics but certainly the insanity you felt when watching that movie.
Hoi-sa-won (2012)
Classic Kdrama but with a bonus- Die Hard/Death Wish action
Can't believe I hadn't come across this earlier. Koreans are excellent story tellers, imho so you have the famous Korean drama storyline but with a bad arse hit man who is gonna go Die Hard/Death Wish "take no prisoners" killer on everyone, but it's his former employer. Comes with the territory.
Hunter (2018)
Pretty good for low budget but really good acting
I didn't care for the editing. It could have flowed better. But the storyline was good. Jason Kellerman, who I had never seen before, is a great actor. The other cast members were also well trained. Kellerman also wrote the script. He's got the depth and breadth of skills to hopefully become noticed and attain roles in high budget flicks.
In a Town This Size (2011)
Painful documentary to watch but darkness needs to be exposed
I've seen this twice now. It's just as painful 2yrs later as when I watched it on Amazon Prime. I do not understand how this man was not brought to justice. I'm unsure what the statute of limitations is. When someone hurts a child who is then spiritually and emotionally destroyed for life, why would there be a statute? That's no different than murder. Kudos to the director, who was one of his many victims for making this film.
Hostage to the Devil (2016)
An interesting documentary on a very brilliant man who was still flawed
It's like one of the paranormal lay assistants said in documentary: You will either believe or not believe. All he can do is get the word out.
My review is written as a practicing Catholic who knows Church history well. The Jesuits indeed took a turn for the worse leading up to and post Vatican 2. Malachi was right to be disillusioned with the 12yrs it takes to become a Jesuit, only for it to succumb to leftist ideology and marxist indoctrination with "liberation theology". Vatican 2 opened the floodgates to all kinds of clerical and liturgical abuses. Fast forward to present day, and you know the smoke of Satan is suffocating the heirarchy.
I can't speak to his detractors like the Time magazine correspondent who had a lifelong ax to grind against Malachi. What I do know is that the seal of the priesthood is indelible, so while not living in the Jesuit community post 1965, he still has the authority to conduct exorcisms, if given approval by the local bishop.
If you are a true believer of Christ, you absolutely cannot deny the existence of Satan and the fact that people are afflicted with demonic possession. Christ exorcised many demons on this earth and he gave his disciples the authority to do so in his name to help those suffering. But at the end of the day, supernatural or preternatural (demonic) posession is still rare. The devil doesn't have to resort to those measures. It's easy enough im post modern culture to ensare others in evil activity in daily choices we make to be selfish and put ourselves instead of neighbor and God first.
The Interior (2015)
Self Congratulatory Piece
This film should have been produced as a 15min short. If it were submitted in film school, it may achieve high praise; however, this should not have been distributed for mass consumption. Little to no plot, mislabeled horror, and painfully staid at times.
