Devil in Ohio (2022)
Hauntingly Exciting Binge
Been hoping for Emily to get more big roles and was excited to go into this without knowing what it was about. She still has a great magnetic presence and gaze
The music was such a standout. It's rare for a show to keep me listening to the episodes' end credits tunes but this was that good.
Beautifully filmed and even in Dolby Vision it doesn't go overboard with the darkness like some of the Netflix shows.
The family dynamic was engaging and the Mae actress was excellent in the creepy role. She was probably too good that the other cult members felt miscast or rather unconvincing. Not one of Jaeger's flashiest roles but he played the dad character perfectly, he would've killed it as the cult leader.
All in all, it was a quicker binge for me than any other show on Netflix recently. I definitely hope Emily becomes one of those actors that regularly get gigs at Netflix.
A Model Family (2022)
Atrocious and Derivative
It's a shame that Netflix keeps financing these writers who keep rehashing other beloved shows. The nods to Breaking Bad are too heavy handed and cringey. But even worse is the typical Korean lead characters that are made too pathetic, whiny and pawns to the suave criminals. The lead guy is just too pitiful and useless to root for, and they expect us to believe he's a professor.
As usual there are the incompetent cops as is the case with most of these korean dramas. Even worse is the weak attempts to dangle Metamorphosis and Jekyll and Hyde to make you think the lead will transform. Then they end with a ridiculous cliffhanger to try and force more seasons of this dullness.
Shadow and Bone (2021)
Engaging and Gorgeous
I usually avoid these Fantasy shows but I was planning to test 4k and HDR and I just couldn't turn it off to go watch my usual crime dramas.
Just my kind of pacing and non-linear storytelling.
Mei Lei is so charming and jovial in it without seeming melodramatic despite her situation, hope her character remains that way.
These baddies are quite endearing too, mostly due to the accent, gaits and postures.
But I'd recommend people choose some moderately brighter picture modes if they're using HDR, otherwise it might look too dark.
Hope the remaining episodes don't drag too much and it gets multiple seasons because the casting and cinematography deserves such rewards.
I also wish the book fans don't start hating on it overwhelmingly because I was expecting the usual vile reviews when I logged in here.
Give it a shot.
Orphan Black: From Dancing Mice to Psychopaths (2016)
Brilliant and Captivating show of the modern era. James Frain was amazing.
I rarely bother writing a review on any titles even the ones that blow my mind but after a twist-filled and entertaining season of Orphan Black I have truly come to appreciate the show's brilliance and extra efforts put on the stories/plots on top of Tat's clone scenes. It's on Netflix too so i can joyfully re-watch some amazing episodes from earlier seasons. As usual the acting has been phenomenal from all actors and you- know-who. This season has been the most coherent yet deliciously complex for me-I adore thought-provoking stuff! The humor especially from the Hendrix combo and sweet villainy of Rachel was welcome as usual. But most of all I have come to appreciate the yummy cinematography and the music editing, just top notch!
But my favorite thing since last season is the recurrence of the suave James Frain (no villain like a Frain villain), I love this guy in the countless stuff I have seen him in but most of all he fits right in the show's class being all classy and stuff.
