Radioactive (2019)
This is a mind-walk of important impacts on science and humankind good and bad. It should be appreciated much more.
I just watched this movie, and it was excellent. It never ceases to amaze and annoy me when such a wonderful biopic gets a low rating rather than a high one. What do people want?! Does every movie have to be full of action and chase scenes?! This one is a mind-walk of important impacts on science and humankind good and bad. It should be appreciated much more.
Please Stand By (2017)
Excellent story and acting - but the social worker ought to have understood autism.
I love this movie for its realistic presentation of the problems and challenges that people on the autism spectrum have to cope with.
However...the social worker's character was written unrealistically. It just seems impossible that a social worker could get so far in life as to grow to adulthood and qualify as a social worker without having a clue as to what Star Trek is, who the characters are, and know that Spock is the Aspie of Star Trek (he shows the markers of Aspeger's, an autism spectrum condition).
This is not the fault of the actress who plays the social worker. Toni Collette does her job well. It is just the script she had to work with.
As for Dakota Fanning, she did her job well, too. The anxiety and determination that she displayed as she acted her role was totally believable, and it made me identify with the character and feel those emotions as she lived through them.
Dunkirk (2017)
Great movie - it shows a close-up view of what happened.
For anyone seeking to learn about what happened at Dunkirk in a way that is up close and personal, this is the war movie to see. It is not a pull-back, wide-angle view of the big picture. There are plenty of other accounts that can offer that view. This one is a heavily detailed showing of what it was like to live through that experience, from the points of view of the soldiers, the navy personnel, the medical teams - which included women. Most importantly, it shows us the bravery and determination of the civilian fishing captains who went across the English Channel and into the war theater to retrieve as many British troops as they could get, so as to enable them to live to fight another day. Those civilians knew exactly what they were doing and why.
Queen of the Desert (2015)
Beautifl showcase of a fascinating, talented, and independent woman.
Movies are a great way to reach a wider audience and spark interest in further reading, but this one has an inaccuracy in it with Henry Cadogan. Other than that, it is excellent. It ought to have made more money, but "most" people don't care enough about learning new things. That is the reason why it didn't make a profit.
The movie beautifully brings Gertrude Bell to life, and succeeds in showcasing her brilliance and her fascination with learning about the world, plus her talent for diplomacy. Male jealousy of her achievements is shown from the outset. She just doesn't care, and that is one of the things that made her great.
Ms. Bell expected and required men to accept her on her own terms.
Young Sheldon (2017)
Awesome! At last, a relatable child character.
I LOVE this show. Finally! An eminently relatable child character. He's just someone whose experiences mirror many that I had as a kid. He is more advanced than the others, he tattles and has to learn not to do that, and he sees that religion is a time-waster. He waits for childhood to be over, enduring it and biding his time during it, so that he can enjoy his work, solitude, and all adults with no children around. I love all that, plus Jim Parsons as the narrator. For weeks, I have been looking forward to this show, and I was not disappointed. However long this show lasts, I shall enjoy it.

The Big Bang Theory: The Troll Manifestation (2015)
For every author who has ever been trolled, this is cathartic...and awesome!
At the last moment, I guessed who the troll was, and it was terrific. You'll have to watch it yourself to find this out! This was so much fun to watch - every minute of it! I can totally relate to the events in this episode. I write dystopian science fiction with a woman professor narrator who has Asperger's, and I got trolled for standing up for autism. This made tonight's episode something that I could really appreciate, and it was hilarious. Any writer who has had this experience would feel better after watching this. The reason behind the trolling is explained. I won't say what it was, but there can be other reasons. All were explored very cleverly in The Troll Manifestation. This show just stays relevant no matter how long it is on, and I love it. I look forward to it every time a new episode is on, and to many of its reruns.
Major Crimes: Leap of Faith (2014)
Great episode about risks to autistic kids.
This episode did a great job of exploring the risks to autistic kids. Autistic kids are a lot of work and require constant attention. The resentment of the stepfather about this was shown at just the right moment, and having suspicion put onto a registered sex offender was the obvious mistake that one would expect to be made and dragged out at length in real life. Granted, I could guess what was going on as soon as I found out about the dead girl's life, but so what? This episode was about educating the viewing public more than mere entertainment. Autistic kids are at constant risk of being wished away, and can get killed for that. One thing I kept asking myself was, is Bill really a sex offender, or was he framed for that also, with his life ruined as a result? That too can happen. As for Provenza not figuring out who murdered that girl, so what? Someone had to be the dense one to illustrate the point. My guess is that he felt really stupid for not figuring it out, appalled about the evil stepfather, and not much pity for any registered sex offender. If Bill is a real sex offender, too bad for him that he had a horrible time.
