Anatomie d'une chute (2023)
Who Dun It?
The story is of a mother who is found to be accused for something she may, or may not have done - with a key witness being her own son. Intriguing premise, but the real story is in the relationship that led up to the fateful moment the story is based on.
From the opening, this movie is easily recognizable as quality. The cinematography the framing the acting, and the strong script set up a very interesting and mind- wrapping mystery.
I enjoyed this movie, it kept my attention throughout the entire duration- there were moments where scenes in court would drag on a bit longer than necessary, but for the most part, it's a very good mystery that will only be solved by further discussion from the viewers. The real ending happens in our minds however, it doesn't discredit the films efforts into pushing us into one conclusion, one way or another.
I find that for movies like this it is very easy to be bored, and not understand the point of peering into peoples lives like this however, understanding, motivations, and learning about how characters react, and develop in each other's worlds is very captivating here.
Solid, definitely worth a quiet watch on a weekend.
Leave the World Behind (2023)
Great Dialogue, Strong Characters, and that's it...?
Where do I start?
This movie had everything that you would want out of a movie - except a fulfilling, plot ending.
From the start, and intriguing base is set up - a family goes off to a vacation home where they don't know anything that's happening from the outside world. We're giving clues and hints as to what's possibly going on - but nothings ever fully fleshes out. That's OK as long as we feel as though there's something to pay off the mystery in the end.
I think the movie spends too much time building and not enough delivery - what is finally delivered? Anticlimactic text on screen.
It's not that text on the screen wouldn't have been appropriate to end the movie - but a lot of loose ends weren't tied up, and the character stories whom we were invested in, aren't really realized - we are left to create our own ending, which in and of itself isn't a problem, but for a movie that seems to spoonfeed so much to us, so much is also left up to our own imaginations. Who is the woman? Why were the deer so involved? There wasn't even really a flood? Overall, I enjoyed looking at the movie as it was gorgeous, and the characters were well written, and believable, but it did leave a bit to be desired at the end.
Loved Mr. Robot, but this is just not Sam's strongest showing. Hoping he can pick it up with another movie in the future.
Changeling (2008)
Horror-Comedy???
After watching this movie with my brother, this movie plays out more of a horror comedy type situation. Angelina Jolie in this movie hast to play the role of a grief-stricken mother, who is dealing with an impostor child. The premise is quite sad, but the reality of the situation here is there is a boy playing dress up to be a son he is not. The movie plays out like an extremely high quality twilight zone episode featuring themes like constant misogyny, gaslighting, and corruption.
The acting in this movie was superb, the writing believable, and the conclusion was worth the wait. Not a lot of bad things to note in this one, I really wish they still made movies like this today.
Definitely runs on a little too long, but overall, the story is definitely worth a watch.
Infinity Pool (2023)
Parts A Lot Better Than The Whole
I went into this one not havjng known a thing about it. I only knew Pennywise's brother and Mia Goth (who has been KILLING IT lately) were in this one. Boy, did they deliver and THEN some.
However, my title says it all. This movie had all the right pieces. Acting was phenomenal, the cinematography was geuninely stunning, and the genre-bending was great.
I was so intrigued by this movie. The characters all felt like they had their own dense backstories and unique motivations. Unfortunately, the first half of the movie is all thats worth watching here. Once the main "EVENT" happens, the movie loses a lot of steam. It goes from mystery/horror to a kind of arthouse type of film. Not saying arthouse is bad, but it felt out of place in a way. Take for example, Hereditary, a horror classic in my opinion. Atmospheric supernatural horror. This movie has the atmosphere but it takes so many ideas from so many places, it ends up falling flat under its own weight.
That's not to say its a bad movie, but I think a bit more focus could have turned this movie great. Strong five to a light six for me.
Tár (2022)
Now What?
I can't say this movie is good. Sure, the acting is good. The writing is okay. The movie isn't interesting though. The movie opens with a 10 minute dialogue purely about this character's life and her positions on classical music. I'm asking myself - why should I care? The movie makes no interest in making you like/sympathize with this character and you have to be dragged along her very boring and pretentious life for two and a half hours.
Only reason I didn't walk out was because I paid full price. So what Cate Blanchett gets an Oscar. I want my 2 hours back for this boring movie. Never again. I can't believe the reviews on here are 10/10. At best this movie is a 4/10 because Blanchett carries. Nothing else about this movie is worth caring about. Makes me sick seeing these reviews.
The Boys: The Instant White-Hot Wild (2022)
Make it Make Sense
> introduce soldier boy and his team
> spend 7 episodes eliminating said team
> put Soldier Boy back in cryo
> Give Homelander additional weapon
> ???
This whole season felt like it was building up to some grand finale only for them to restart at the beginning of the season. Like why introduce all of these characters and backstory only for Homelander to one hit kill Noir and put Soldier Boy back in cryo? Sure The Boys are back together but why would we literally reach the finish line of killing Homelander just for Butcher to turn around and change his mind? Seems inconsistent and a bit redundant.
Action was cool.
6.5/10.
Jerrod Carmichael: Rothaniel (2022)
Stand-Up Special or Live Podcast?
A good friend of mine (who is also a pretty pig Carmichael fan as well) likened this stand-up as a podcast and I feel thats an apt description. Sure, it was funny at times but for the most-part its main draw was hearing such a raw and complex situation(coming out to your family!!!). Carmichael's story is engaging, and I felt I kept listening to hear his story resolve, but in the end we as an audience are the ones who resolve Carmichael's family's future in our imaginations.
As far as "stand-up comedy" specials go this wouldn't even crack my top 15. Its not funny.
In terms of "live A-list celebrity conversations with crowds" this is a 10/10.
If you want to hear Carmichael at his best, go watch '8'.
Last Night in Soho (2021)
I Wanna Wake Up From This Movie
Okay, this movie was not Edgar's best. Per usual, Edgar's sound design is incredible. Characters speaking off-screen, echoing voices, and a dazzling soundtrack - this grabbed my attention - but that's about it.
Our protagonist, a soft-spoken fashion designer with the personality of a cold slice of toast mumbles through the movie only daring to speak up when she's haunted by hereditary visions. It made the movie hard to care about but she wasn't the only thing that was uninteresting. The bully, Jocasta, served no purpose outside of being a bully. The love interest, John, had an undying (literally) attachment to a girl he had only known to be borderline psychotic.
Unfortunately, Mr. Wright has given us good style without a whole lot of substance. For me, not worth the initial watch and definitely not worth a recommend.
The Woman in the Window (2021)
Don't Waste Your Time
Through constant dialogue and annoying character decisions, there was maybe a movie in here? Plot was confusing at first, and when it became clear it just became boring. Please avoid. Nothing redeeming about this movie outside of performances, but there's no substance in this. Please do something else - play an instrument, read a book, call a friend but this movie was not good.
Your Honor: Part Ten (2021)
This was a triple - almost a Home Run
While this show was predictable at times, the writing in this show is simply stellar. The conversations, hit. The direction of this episode was tense throughout and that's way more than you can say for most shows. Adam was annoying, yes but clearly you can see he's been coddled his entire life and has never had to feel the weight of his actions - until now.
The acting in this show, phenomenal - you cannot look away from these actors. I would say my detraction from this episode would be some conveniences Cranston being able to legit run fast enough to reach the hotel in time. Overall, great series and great ending. Shows are made to entertain, not to serve you what you want on a silver platter. Be kind to each other y'all
