I Still Don't Know What To Think
21 May 2012
As a child, I was bullied for the same reasons as the main character. I didn't like how everything suddenly became okay in the end. Life is not like that, you can't just decide to change things and have them eventually be okay. There are always bullies, there are always people being put down for one reason or another. One movie is not going to change that. But I suppose it is a start.

One thing I really disliked about the story is the characters made changes to fit in with society. Real courage, in my opinion, occurs when someone stands their ground, plants their feet, raises their voice and shouts "I will not change to better fit your perceptions of NORMAL!" We are all human, beautiful as we are both inside and out. I don't like preachy movies that tell you to gain acceptance by losing weight if you're fat. Sometimes, problems go a lot deeper than that. It can take years of counseling to erase the psychological scars of peer torture, poor self body image, and depression. Better to love ourselves FIRST and THEN affect change (if so we choose) because that is REAL change, not transient.

There were a lot of positive messages in the movie, however, which I suppose was the point. To me, any of the good was lost in the profound naivete this movie showed about high school and real life situations in particular.

Heart-Warming and Sweet

This was absolutely adorable. I laughed a lot as I watched the movie. I felt I could relate to both Spork and her brother. A true underdog movie, you see a family with literally NOTHING going for them and a little person trying to make sense of her mixed gender and find a place to fit in with a society with no room for people with gender issues, poverty, or orphans. It's wonderful to see the relationships of the characters with each other develop, as well as Spork learning to love and accept herself for who she is.

I loved the bright colors, the animations, and the music. The acting was excellent. I could really sympathize and laugh right along with them. The story was interesting and it didn't drag on and on.

I recommend it to anyone who isn't afraid of people different than themselves, and even more so to those who are. Open up your heart and your mind. We don't all need to fit into a specific category or caste. We're all people too!

Not Good For Sure
21 May 2012
The movie itself was okay. I was mildly entertained. What I mostly watched it for was trying to pick out various landmarks or Vermont-made products.

Plot- infantile. I don't even think a teenage boy would get much kick out of it.

Acting- atrocious. But I have seen worse.

Production- good quality. It doesn't appear amateur, at least.

My summary is if you live in Vermont you will probably watch it for the same reasons I did. The actors and characters themselves really don't lend for any real sympathy from the audience. Perhaps that was the writer's intent, but I have no way to know for sure. Honestly, I was not in the least bit riveted by the movie, but then... I saw it on Netflix so I wasn't expecting an Oscar-worthy film. I guess if you're drunk, high, or really, really tired you might enjoy this movie. It wasn't the worst I've ever seen.
