The Man in the Iron Mask (1998)
Good Movie
I've always been intrigued by the legend of The Man In The Iron Mask. I am also a big fan of the writing of Alexander Dumas. So quite obviously I had high expectations from this movie.
I was not disappointed. The story grips you right from the beiging to the very end. The cinematography, costumes and scenery are nothing short of breath taking. The script was written to perfection staying as true to the original Dumas story as it possibly could. The performance from Jermey Irons was good. Unfortunaly the same cannot be said about the rest of the cast.
Leonardo Di Caprio was patehic. He constantly speaks with a distinct American accent despite the fact that he is portraying a French King. The same goes for John Malkovich(which surprising considering how talented he is.) On a whole despite some dismal performances, The Man In The Iron Mask is an engrossing tale that should be viewed at least once in your life time.
Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998)
Excellent
This is the movie that introduced me to the wonderful world of Indian Cinema.
I was 10 years old when I first saw Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and I instantly fell in love with it. I have since lost count of the number of times that I have watched it.
This was director Karan Johar's debut movie. Talk about starting of with a bang. This movie is perfection. It lives up to it's tag line. They'll make you laugh..They'll make you cry...They'll even make you fall in love. It made me do all of these things.
The songs are wonderful. The acting was fantastic. I love Kajol in this movie. She steals the show. I heard that Twinkle Khanna was actually considered as the first choice to play Anjali. That would have been the biggest mistake as I can't envision anyone else playing the role of Anjali besides Kajol.
Shah Rukh Khan was also good. He was less irritating back then. His performance actually had some soul behind it. Rani was the perfect choice for Tina.
Looking back at this movie now the only aspect that seems a bit redundant is the choreography. But you can't blame Farah Khan as things like dance moves revolutionizes with time.
On a whole this is a beautiful piece of cinema and all I can say to Karan Johar and his entire cast and crew is thank. Thank you for making Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and giving me and the world one of the greatest stories ever told.
Red Riding Hood (2011)
Surprised!
I watched this movie expecting something along the lines of the Twilight series. I was pleasantly surprised.
The narrative is fresh and inventive. It kept you in suspense throughout the entire movie.
Harwicke could have easily opted to show the narrative in it original form yet she chose to give us something different.
The settings are dark yet beautiful. The acting was adequate. I was a little disappointed with the performance of Gary Oldman and the conclusion at the end of the movie, but these prove to be minor trivialities.
On a whole this a roller coaster suspense ride that is a good view if you wish to pass time.
You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger (2010)
Stupid
Everything about this movie screams Woody Allen. I should learn my lesson by now but yet I continue to watch the rubbish that he churns out.
This didn't even have a proper conclusion. It left the audience hanging at the end.
The story plays out like a bad soap opera. The acting is mediocre. It should have been better considering that the actors cast are extremely talented.
The narration is irritating. The music is corny(not suitable for the situations in the narrative) Why does Frieda Pinto's character constantly wear red?
The whole movie is just stupid and should be avoided at all costs.
Girl, Interrupted (1999)
Beautiful!
Once in a while you come across a movie that forces you to ask questions about the world and yourself. Girl Interrupted did that to me.
As the credits rolled and the song Downtown by Petula Clarke was playing. I couldn't hold back my tears. It got me thinking, am I really all that sane.
The cast and crew is nothing short of perfection in this movie. With Angelina Jolie leading the pack. She truly deserved her Oscar win for this performance. Equal praise should also go out to Brittany Murphay and Wynona for their performances.
The movie had many profound moments that were awe inspiring and gut wrenchingly painful to watch. Whether it be Lisa abusing Daisy,Daisy committing suicide or Sussana telling Lisa that she is already dead.
This movie will leave an indelible mark on your psyche and on your heart.
Aashiqui (1990)
Love the music. Hate the movie.
One thing that I love about this movie is the music. It is beautiful. I can guarantee you, that generations to come will be listening to this music long after we have all left this world. There is something eternal and evergreen about the soundtrack.
That being said I feel that the movie in no way reflects the sheer genius of the music. One can see tiny glimpses of coping from the movie Rebel Without A Cause throughout the entire narrative, the obvious being the scene in the police station at the being of the movie. In fact the entire narrative seems contrived and stiff.
Rahul and Anu did the best that the could do with their cardboard characters.
While the music will remain eternal, I predict that Aashqui the movie will fade into obscurity in the years to come.
Gandhi, My Father (2007)
Average
Given the subject matter of this film, I think that it could have been much better. I felt that the script lagged in certain places making the narrative boring.
The actor who played the role of Gandhi was miscast. He did not do justice to the role and did not bring forth the correct emotional depth that was required for the role. Shefali Shah was average as Kastur. Akshay Khanna was brilliant as Harilal Gandhi carrying the majority of the film on his shoulders.
Cinematography was brilliant. Set design and costumes were adequate, capturing the essence of the period that the movie is set in.
On a whole this movie seemed flat in places. It is interesting from a historical point of view but that's where it ends. Gandhi My Father is an average movie that could have been better given better acting, screen writing and directing.
Jannat 2 (2012)
Horrible!
This is a horrendous attempt at cinema. The only good thing about this movie was Randeep Hooda's performance, the way Dehli was captured cinematicaly and the song Tera Deedar Hua (ruined by bad choreography).
Emraan Hashmi has become type cast in his various roles. I can't take him seriously anymore. I couldn't help cracking up when he was dying in the end. The female lead was pathetic. I'm sorry but exposing your breasts does not constitute as talent. The supporting cast was just as bad.
The pace of the story was slow. A few songs could have been left out of the mix. The script and the dialogs were weak. In short the narrative was a big, predictable, convoluted mess.
You expect something better from Vishesh Films. Extremely disappointed.
La Bamba (1987)
I love this movie
Before I watched this movie I had no idea who Ritchie Valens was. I had heard the song La Bamba and had heard about The Day the Music Died but didn't know that he had anything to do with them. This movie is an excellent tribute to him, his music and his tragically short life.
I only watched this movie in 2012. The movie was released two years before i was born. It was released in 1987. I thought that it would be dated but I was wrong. Apart from some of the cinematic techniques and cinematography this movie is still fresh and can appeal to today's audience just as much as it did 24 years ago.
It is not overly sentimental but manages to strike the right balance in order to convey the correct emotions. There are no flashy sets or a convoluted story lines. no added frills. Just good honest, straight story telling that adds to the realness of the movie and the characters. Not a single moment is contrived or pretentious.
The performances where great especially Lou Diamond Phillips and Esai Morales.
Music was brilliant. Los Labos performed each track to perfection.
The ending is a real tear-jerker.
One of the best movies ever made. I can watch it over and over again without tiring of it and still cry at the end each time.
Kudos to Luis Valdez and his entire team for making such a great piece of cinema. You have truly inspired me and shown what great cinema is about. Showing the truth.
