A Cook on the Wild Side (1995)
Brilliant, quirky, and confronting
20 December 2010
This is a very memorable slice of TV, unlike any other show to do with food I've seen. Hugh's foraging and courage in eating wild foods is brilliant, quirky, and often confronting. His mantra is to try and live off the land by eating only what he can find by foraging, or by bartering with some of the food/drink wages he earns doing chores on his travels... otherwise he goes hungry! A bonus for campers and gadget fans alike is to see the quirky engineering embodied in Hugh's 'gastro-wagon' and 'gastro-bike'. If you live in the UK you can learn about some unusual food you can eat in the wild, but if you live anywhere else it is still very entertaining TV that really gets one thinking about food.
