Barbie (2023)
A plastic product.
I thought the first half of the movie was hilarious and well done, but the last act of the movie is where it lost me. Instead of trying to communicate a message, it really felt like it was preaching way too much. Instead of showing, it tells you what to think in the last act of the movie.
The only thing it has going for it is the set desing, wardrobe and music.
Aside from tha the movie is plastic like the eponymous doll.
The characters have no plot development, literal cliches.
If you write characteres as abstractions , at least try to make into characters that are relatable to the viewer.
Do not waste your time with this movie.
My Adventures with Superman (2023)
Sailor Krypton...
None of these characters act like they have since the beginning of their creation to 2014.
Whatever they did to Livewire should be a crime against humanity.
And what they hell is up with the bib? Like who acts like that in public? Or in real life?
Do these creators know how to write stories?
Only thing redeeming is the art; the fact that the artist stayed inside the lines should be applauded.
The idea of copying an anime style makes yoy realize how untalented are the creators of this show, They can not even pull that off, even with something as studied as anime creation. Even there they fail in an espectacular way.
Kidô senshi Gandamu: Suisei no majo (2022)
A dissapoinment
This show started ok and it went downhill from there.
Think fanfic level of writing and you are getting there. The plot was more concerned with shipping two characters than being a Gundam series.
The show is usually 80% school drama show, 20 % Gundam, not good at all for a supposed Gundam show.
At the end of season 1, it started to get good, but after that is back to the boring school room com generic anime spiced with robots.
Do you remember all that political drama from other Gundam shows? Here is replaced for not-so-subtle anti-corporation quips, with no thought put into how a world like that would function.
Score more than a 5 are normie scores.
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (2023)
Dial of disappointment.
I feel like I watched a zombie movie, and I dont mean bc of Fords age.
This movie is a ghoul of what Indy use to be.
Helena is a terrible character, and after the 80s/90s of great female archaeologies (Lara Croft, Bernice Summerfield, Vash) we get this one who is just so bad. I think she has a magic power of her own that makes everyone else around her dumber then she which makes her appear smarter.
The CGI in this movie is about as good as it was in Rouge One with Peter Cushing and Carrie Fisher.
Story is junk, The Adventures of Young Indiana Jones was better written.
I actually miss the days when movies were more grounded. The first 3 movies one could have believed the events actually happened; not this one. These movies should be more like the James Bond movies and when the time comes recast and just do some new ideas. But what we get is Indiana Jones and the Late Social Security Check.
Save your money and skip this.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023)
Fan Service Done RIGHT!
There are some very minor spoilers ahead, i just want to say that this movie exceeded my expectations! The Critic score should not be taken seriously it's nowhere near a bad nor average movie. There are some things that i didn't like about it but overall i left the theaters with a smile.
The Visuals are probably the best Illumination Studios has ever done, very smooth and gorgeous to look at. The human characters like Mario, Luigi and Peach's faces look different from their videogame counterparts and kind of weird at first but you will get used to them and at least their clothing match but on the other hand the animals and creatures from the Mushroom Kingdom like the Koopas, Donkey Kong and Bowser all look very accurate and detailed.
The Voice Acting, Sorry but Mario does NOT sound like Mario, at all in this movie! I'm not a fan of Chriss Pratt's acting as Mario. Luigi sounds better but not accurate either, Peach is good i guess and Donkey Kong sounds like Seth Rogen...Yay... Bowser however, gets a straight 10/10 Jack Black actually tried to sound like Bowser and he should be cast again as Bowser in future movies. Long time Mario fans will be surprised to know that Charles Martinet is also in the movie, but not as Mario... The character he got to act for is such a waste and not even worth mentioning to be honest.
The Story is not your typical Mario videogame story, it's actually baffling at first how literal they took the Mario "origin" story of him being a New York plumber. The movie starts going in the wrong direction but as the movie goes on it becomes better and better and ultimately it worked in the end. The pacing is very fast there is no real character development except for Luigi and maybe Mario but there's just too many relevant characters and not enough time to flesh them out. At least they all have defined personalities.
Overall, it's not an Amazing movie but definitely a fun and good first outing by Nintendo and Illumination, it's full of Mario references and just good fan service like a Mario movie should be. Here's hoping future Mario movies!!
And 8 but giving it a 10 to even out the hater trolls.
Don't Worry Darling (2022)
Conflicted
Don't Worry Darling had so much potential and still somehow fell flat, but it kept me thoroughly engaged throughout the film. I will start with the positives. Florence Pugh was absolutely amazing in this film. She really shined. The movie kept my roommate and I intrigued the entire time. I wanted to know what was going to happen and it was enjoyable to some extent. The world-building was phenomenal, it was an interesting concept. Now onto my critiques, the revelation of the film was utterly disappointing. This ending could have been mind-blowing, it was setting it up to be mind-blowing, but in the end, it wasn't. I could have thought of that ending off the top of my head. The big plot twist was predictable. This movie left me with many unanswered questions. When my roommate and I talked about the movie afterward we realized that the movie has many plot holes. Many things don't make sense once you realize what actually happened. What happens to Harry Styles' character also doesn't make sense when you break it down. The movie ends on a weird note. It feels like it ends abruptly and should have kept going. When you think about what happens after it seems the movie just ends and doesn't deal with the problems that would have occurred if the movie kept going. Another issue I had is that Chris Pine was so underutilized that it is frustrating. His character could have been menacing, terrifying even. We could have felt enraged for Alice, and it just doesn't go there. I wanted to feel more throughout watching this movie, but it felt like the movie wasn't willing to go that far. I wanted Chris Pine to be more central in this movie. Sometimes a mysterious villain works, but it does not work for this movie. Don't Worry Darling had the potential to be amazing, but it wasn't. Which is frustrating. The more I think about this movie the more upset I feel. If you want to watch this movie, I recommend not thinking too deeply about it afterward.
Obi-Wan Kenobi (2022)
Milking the cash cow....
Milking the cash cow....
...and deconstructing heroes at the same time.
Disney does not stop. Its mission is clear. They want to emmasculate all male heroes and transform the Star Wars universe in some sort of a "modern" society that mirrors XXI century USA mores and values... And because of it, we have yet another horrid, horrific TV show "about" Star Wars.
The plot, script and actors (young princess Leia is cringeworthy..) are awful. Ewan is lost in it and Obi-Wan is a caricature of the character that once was played by Sir Alec Guines.
This is what passes as entertainment nowadays. The product of pure corporate greed.
Booksmart (2019)
Just awful.
After seeing the very high critic scores, I was expecting to like, and perhaps love, this movie. I love Olivia Wilde, especially her performance in Drinking Buddies. I was really hopeful about her directorial debut. This comedy is not funny. There is no timing, no flow. The base premise, that these nerds want to party when they realize everyone else in their high school also got into amazing colleges while partying and screwing off, is silly, of course. But the flimsiness of it, especially because of no follow up, was sad. We kept waiting to laugh, but every performance was so stilted and every character so stereotyped (the over-the-top, effeminate gay theater boys, come on), we chuckled mildly once. After an hour, we walked out. We don't do that. It also made me think it may be a generational thing. But I really don't think so. We love these coming-of-age stories, from Superbad, American Pie, Clueless, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, even American Graffiti. This was just unfunny and bad.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power (2022)
Not tolkien at all.
This show so far exemplifies everything wrong with modern entertainment. It invests everything in the superficial and neglects the soul. The special effects that obviously were the entire focus of this project do look nice but in a Videogame kind of way, they are glossy and clean, way to clean. They lack any grit that brings them into reality which is something Jacksons' movies did well. Along with the videogame, graphics comes videogame soundtrack. Now here is the real problem, the dialogue and character building in this is garbage, just haughty fake accents you expect from very low-budget films. So if you like a bunch of teenagers LARPing then you are in luck. I liked no one in this except the Istari but he is mute at this point. His interaction with female-frodo is not bad. Everyone else is.
She-Hulk: Attorney at Law (2022)
Just awful.
Horrible show, oh how Marvel has fallen... Terrible acting, pathetically cringe comedy that never lands, and late 90s CGI that absolutely ruins the entire experience. Not worth anyone's time.
Captain Marvel (2019)
A mess.
First, this is a review of the movie itself. I know there has been discussion outside regarding cast comments, and sincerely, I just went into the movie and forgot about those things, as what matters for me is the film itself, and its own merits. I am a big fan of the comics and the MCU, and so although I wasn't familiar with this character, I was looking forward to her introduction and understanding how this will impact the MCU. I also know that having a very overpowering character, like Superman, is harder to relate to, so I went into the movie already willing to give them some slack, but hoping they could pull it off and make an awesome movie.
Unfortunately, for many reasons, the movie is simply bad. And yet, it had many things in it that show it could have been much better, so maybe there is hope for a sequel in the future, and are definitely things that can be changed. Let me explain. I think the easiest way to describe how I felt during the movie was that I cringed a lot.
First, I had heard that the main Actress Brie Larson was a really good actress. I can't comment on that as this is the only movie I saw with her, and I definitely want to see other of her works now so I can get a better opinion. But in this movie, her character was portrayed in a very abnoxious manner in most of the film (you know when a person can't be nice or kind to anyone, but just wants to act like a know-it-all jerk?). I don't know whose decision this was, maybe she was asked to portray it this way. There are though some better moments, in particular in the ship with Fury, and with her best friend's child, that she is more likable. I just wish we had seen more of that. I think the tone for her came off unnecessarily cold and again, the way I felt was that it was just being abnoxious. Now, I think this is something that she and they can change going forward, but it did not help when they are introducing us to a new character. This is even worse taking into consideration that they really need audiences to like her, given how difficult it is to connect with such an overpowered character, as is Captain Marvel's case. So, her acting was way off, and I don't know why, and I don't want to put in question her capacity, hence my wanting to see other works from her.
Anyway, moving on. The second most impactful problem is the production and editing. The movie is a long string of moments that should be of either emotion or great action, but that fall flat. I really feel they wanted those moments to be really grand and epic, and I think they actually could have been, but they just felt rushed and unearned, which actually turned them into really cringy. And this is the problem for me, I think that Captain Marvel's story was actually all there, there were lots of good pieces, which were presented, but the way they brought this together, the timing and presentation was beautiful visually, but was just rushed and felt really off for me, personally. So I really feel that it wasn't a lack of compelling story or character motivation, just the way the final cut flows. Those emotional moments, and the action, they were lacking either some more development, or not to be rushed or so obvious. The Skrulls (and Ben Mendelsohn) were great, it was always nice to have Fury and Coulson (I'm a big fan of the Agents of Shield, Coulson is such a charismatic character). Ok, having been unbiased about the movie, I do need to address honestly the Feminism question. I am a person who really enjoys that there are movie with strong female leads, with great stories to tell. And I think Marvel has a lot of potential they still have not taken advantage in terms of female characters to tell more stories about (I mean, Scarlet Witch and Black Widow have been great until now, and I would love to hear more of their stories, and have them lead their own films, i think they deserve more attention. And the actresses have done great!).
I know that some of the directors and cast were open about the feminism part. I have no problem with that. I just feel that it was cringy to force Director Fury to act dumb in some situations, just to give Captain Marvel an air of "gotcha", hey, let me lead you. That is just not necessary. I think audiences deserve much better. I loved Alita, which had a great female character and was an awesome movie. In this movie, I felt they always had to prove that Captain Marvel was better than the men around her, and sincerely, it was cringy. The movie is bad, because Brie Larson's acting is bad, and the production was way off.
But, I think those are two things that they can turn around I and sincerely hope they do, and if they do, I will enjoy watching what they do in a sequel. Ah, did I mention I loved what they did with the Skrulls? Well done on that point! And yes, that cat it is cool!
