Famiria (2023)
A patchwork story
After watching the previews, I went thinking the movie would explore the difficulties of foreign nations living in Japan, and more specifically, the discrimination that Brazilians face. While there were a few scenes that showed it, they mainly were dealing with two-dimensional gangsters wanting their money returned. It was a tragedy with characters doing things for obscure reasons. Unnecessary scenes could have been replaced to show why the main character felt about the others. I felt little or no sympathy for most characters. The saving grace was the acting was good. If only they had a good script to work with. I went away confused on what I just saw.
The Woman in the Window (1944)
Didn't live up to expectations
I watched this as I love film noir and this is touted as one of the best, but it left me flat. I didn't like the ending as many other reviewers have said, but beyond that the story was almost too obvious where it was going and I found myself laughing more than feeling any suspense. The only version I could find was a digitally colored version which completely destroyed the feel of a good film noir.
Mary Poppins Returns (2018)
Entertaining, but I was ready for the ending long before it came
I appreciated that they tried to make this in the style of movies made in the era that the original was made, but it really lacked a lot of its predecessor's charm. I never felt empathy for any of the characters, and therefore, didn't really care one way or the other on who came out on top of the conflict. The musical numbers were visually appealing, but all-in-all, I didn't really feel anything at the conclusion of the movie.
