Beau Is Afraid (2023)
I could only give this a five
For the first half an hour, I thought this film was nothing less than brilliant. I knew much of what was happening was from Beau's view of the world, but it also seemed very plausible!!!
Beau lives on his own in the most horrendous part of town with many unsavory characters lurking outside his building. One day he is faced with a series of nightmarish mishaps that lead him to the home of a surgeon and his wife. They help him recover injuries he has sustained from a stabbing and car crash.
Two very screwed up characters also live with the couple, an insane ex army guy who they look after and a daughter who is seriously f-cord upup since the death of her brother. After another series of events which culminates in the suicide of the young girl by bright blue paint ingestion, Beau is somehow transported to a group of people he meets in a forest and then back home for the funeral of his mother. After this I became seriously confused and the film veered off into being pretentious. Beau's childhood love dies during sex and more weird images and storylines are then introduced. I can't even begin to explain what was happening!!
Remiscent of Kafka, I thought perhaps I was not smart enough to understand what was then happening. But then I decided, I didn't care...
Kindred (2022)
I want season two now!
I haven't read the book but this was a good story. Here are my gripes: the two main characters went back and forth in time but never seemed to eat... in the plantation present, there were too many story lines going on. When things hit the fan it was unclear what was going on with each character... one had implausibly been hidden away for a few days but the plantation owner would surely have searched each slave house. Of course the clothes and boots found for Kevin fit perfectly. You get my drift.
The leads were great but the reason for my success low score was the neighbors. They irritated me with their acting and constant storyline. And that car ain't never coming back is it?

Heartbreaking
I work with children with autism. Some are significantly impaired. I often tell myself it's so hard for these parents to have to watch their child all day... keep them safe and in the meantime often have no lives themselves. This movie shares a little if what it maybe line behind the scenes. The stress on marriages is real. There is a high incidence of divorce in families where kids have disabilities. The level of help outside school is limited. The incidence and diagnosis of children with autism continues to rise. I am not sure if the child actor in this movie has autism or not but if he does not, he should have won an award. My only criticism is the music score at time so depressing, it almost made me want to stop watching.

Top Notch
I just had to force myself not to watch the last episode until tomorrow. I want it to last another day. This is a smart, funny, painfully truthful show with four fiercely strong women actors. I've spent my whole trying to be Eve (badly),avoid being. Robyn (successfully) and have just ended up being Melody (what's not to love?) Caroline is just to cool to even contemplate duplicating. There is only one Caroline! This show is just as slick as Caroline and the writing is deliciously fabulous. Only complaint? I need Season three NOW!

A Hidden Gem
Everything I would say about this movie had been said in the other reviews. Sad this hasn't gotten greater visibility as it's a really good film. I think one of Hawke's best performances.
Valley Girl (2020)
Fun Fun Fun
Without comparing to the original, I watched this on lockdown with my 18 year old who decreed it, "my new favorite movie." Neither deep or a masterpiece, it was fun. An escape from Covid for a few hours with so many 80s references, bright colors and song covers. Exactly what we needed to watch the day after the worst Christmas ever. I just want to know where that great Bowie shirt was from.
