Spooks: World Trade (2006)
Skip
Currently re-watching Spooks, I found this to be the most boring episode of the entire series.
It was slow, plodding, and lacking in tensoon. The problem was that there were no stakes for the characters. It seemed ridiculous that our collection of heroes who normally deal in counter terrorism etc, would mount a full scale operation to secure a trade agreement. It cam off a tad ridiculous, and I just didn't care what happened.
Quite a let down from what has started off as a very good season.
I must use .or characters in order to save this review, and... ...I've started so I'll finish. I also think the Ruth/Harry plot line is rather infantile.
The Three Musketeers (1973)
Unusual Directorial Choices
Whilst this is the most faithful adaptation I have seen, and the acting is quite good actually, I am left a little baffled by some of the directorial choices. There is a running gag that characters cannot see each other, when they clearly ought to be able to. I wondered if this was a joke at Rochefort's expense, but Buckingham and Raquel Welch's character are afflicted also.
Spike Milligan is very good, and captures Dumas humour well, but I struggle to understand why some of the more 'comical' ADR has been added.
It feels very much a product of its time, and hasn't aged too well. By modern standards, the choreography, is lacking and overall the movie feels cheap and campy.
Verdict: I'd leave it on of if I found it while channel surfing, but I wouldn't go out of my way to watch it.
Passes the time pleasantly, but I'll give the sequels a miss.
The Newsroom: 5/1 (2012)
What is the virtue of a disproportionate response?
I have a problem with this episode.
The drama on this series often doesn't come from people doing things, it comes.from people learning that others have done things.
The characters have to overcome their own personal struggles in order to get the story.
While sometimes it works have a problem with this episode is that the reward and recognition our heroes get, exceeds their involvement or personal challenges, those challenges being they have had to decipher a couple of cryptic tweets.
I know the same could be said for any episode, but they all act in an almost entitled manner towards their recognition, which comes makes them come across as smug, egotistical, and pompous.
A disproportionate response to reporting the news.
I am a fan of Mr Sorkin and I usually enjoy The Newsroom. This, in my belief, is the word episode he he has penned across any series.
Masters of the Universe: Revelation (2021)
I quite liked it
I quite liked it. I liked the new style of animation, which felt very up to date. I can't get used to skelletors voice and I don't know why Allen Oppenheimer wouldn't do it as he's still around and provides other voices in this mini series, unless he was just to old to do a major character.
He-Man is notably absent for a large part of the story and it does focus on Teela and Man at Arms, but they do a devcent job in making her a more rounded character that has something to do. I suspect He-Man will feature more in the next part though.
They really did shoehorn a lot of charactes in there, but it was pleasing to see them and be able to say "I HAD THAT TOY" A lot of villains seemed to meet their demise pretty rapidly, I hope they return in later series's.
I didn't like the music. I really missed the old scores and was disappointed that there was not even a musical nod to the original.
Jack Ryan (2018)
Why all the negative reviews?
I don't understand why all the reviews are so negative on here. I'm half way through the season and it's pretty good so far.
It's not Alec Baldwin or Harrison Ford, in fact in terms of the movies it's closer to Affleck's incarnation, but that's no bad thing. I once tried to read one of the books, which I didn't enjoy. I can only think the negative reviews are from fans of the books who aren't keen on the changes.
It's well acted.
It's well scripted.
The production values are good, and the series as a whole is keeping my attention.
Definitely worth a watch I'd say.
