The Ruins (2008)
A little bit of Everything.
As a horror movie fan, I loved this one! It's got a bit of everything in it to satisfy all levels. It had some physcological elements, some thrills, chills and, of course, some all out gore. I left the movie feeling very satisfied. The acting was pretty decent, and I was glad to see some recognizable faces, instead of the usual dime-a-dozen actors common to horror movies. The set up for the actual ruins was slightly predictable, but...I mean, are you really going to go see this movie for stellar plot devices and effects? This wasn't the goriest movie I've ever seen but some people kept leaving the theater during the gory parts... so avoid if you haven't yet desensitized yourself to violence!
Shutter (2008)
A touch of Gothika and a splash of The Grudge.
You can easily see this movie taking bits from the Grudge and Gothika and interweaving them together into this stinker of a film. Can this film be docked for plagiarism? I really think it should be. There are many, many, many, plot holes and devices that seem too coincidental to achieve even a speck of verisimilitude. I don't even know why this was even set in Japan, it really added nothing to the film at all, if anything it took away, because you keep asking "why is this in Japan, what the hell is going on?" The acting was so awful, even in the scenes meant to be "emotional" or "scary" I found myself laughing - along side everyone else in the theatre.
10,000 BC (2008)
Moses?
I entered this movie expecting an absolutely insane hour and a half of cavemen, gore, and saber-tooth tigers. Rather, I received an hour and a half of a Moses story. Most of this movie I've already blocked out. I found myself cursing the supposedly humanistic character of D'Leh for just being plan stupid, or incredibly predictable. The problem with this movie, I found, was the instead of attempting an amazing gore-feast like "300", which just amazes any action-movie, science fiction or even fantasy nerd on all levels, this movie tended to dwell too much on the drama between characters and situations in the film, which I don't think anyone who went to go see the movie wanted to see, and which also failed to deliver any expected reactions of sympathies from the audience. I'm not saying that this is the worst movie of all time, rather I'm merely suggesting that an editor with a fine-toothed comb would have done this movie wonders in the creative process by perhaps cutting out half of the love story or creating a more thickly veiled allegory of the thinly disguised city that was supposed to be Egypt and D'Leh's freeing of the slaves.
Xiao cai feng (2002)
very good. accurate, and beautifully done
this movie I watched only because I red the book first which is excellent. the movie is fairly loyal to the book. only 1 or 2 things are added, but other than that is is very accurate. the movie was created like it was taken right out of the book. the love story is charming and the characters are never annoying and never get tiresome. the atmosphere created in this movie is brilliant. a delight to watch. you could fall in love with The little seamstress just the way to protagonist and Luo do.the scenery is perfect, and makes you wish to be re-educated, although... not at all. just watch this movie. not a break through but certainly an enjoyable story.
Bats (1999)
what do a hick sheriff, hot chick and the standard funny black man have in common? this movie.
This movie seemed as if were filmed on a 100$ budget, very bad camera work.
Too many stupid plot twists, like how the scientist suddenly turned evil? Too many magic mericals, like how the obligatory funny black guy is the smartest person and can hack his way into everything. wouldn't you expect that if the army got involved with a crisis involving bats they would have at least one bat expert!?! and why in gods name would the government ever need these killer bats? Extremely predictable, you could see that ending coming from a mile away. Bad SE. I think they spent the whole budget on the explosions at the end. I wanted to turn off the movie, just after the first scene, which involved a train and some drunken Teens coming to their gruesome deaths. The hick sheriff turned out to be a soulful Opera fan, who was really very bright and witty? your a hick sorry. the love connection between the Woman and the hick really didn't seem to work. If indeed they were trying to make a connection ,witch they seemed to hint towards, wasn't a big enough hint.
Please, only see this movie if you can't handle Horror movies, because it's really really very un-scary. or if your dimwitted and truly believe bats are as big as eagles and eat humans. or did they eat humans? I don't know...
