Family Guy: Brian & Stewie (2010)
Rather over the top dramatic and forced feeling
The original run of Family Guy proved itself to be very efficient at making a episode serious while *still* retaining the humor when Brian Falls in love with an elderly woman who later then dies. That episode was sorta the Family Guy equivalent of Fry's dog in Futurama.
By comparison this episode feels forcefully awkward and serious and conflicted between trying to be serious drama and frat-boy humor. Possibly because Stewie no longer feels like the fr-enemy genius like in previous B/S episodes and instead just feels like a overly naive gay-joke child the entire show. As a result his concern for Brian's suicidal thoughts and exposing that he actually cares feels really caked on and fake.
Kids (1995)
shock value, pretty much nothing else
I figured this was going to be a brutal movie since the person who referred it to me also referred Man Bites Dog (which I enjoyed).
Look, this would easily have gone from a dumb, vile, pointless waste of time shock movie to a must watch if there was any sort of resolve at the end. Or better yet if these kids just got their asses whooped like they probably would in reality.
You know those arty stupid films that don't know how to wrap up a plot so they just suddenly END? That's how this one goes. Any hint of plot you might pick up ends up just being an illusion.
There's a lot of buildup for the female main character that goes NOWHERE. Instead she goes to sleep, gets another pile of bricks dumped on her and the movie ends.
So basically if you feel like going back to junior high and listening to a bunch of posers talk about getting laid and busting caps for 2 hours, watch this.
Koyaanisqatsi (1982)
Pretend Reggio doesn't exist
Only thing stopping me from giving this movie a pure 10 is that it's "message", Life Out of Balance, jus really doesn't come across. In fact everyone I know seems to come away from this movie with a different understanding or story, which I think is awesome. Honestly ,the only thing that turned me off about this movie was the last minute of it. YES THE LAST MINUTE, in which the definition of Koyaanisqatsi is revealed and the lyrics are translated into a batch of soapboxing phrases. The DVD trailers for the sequels also took a lot away from my buzz, ignore those.
So my advice is to watch this movie, but completely ignore whatever message Reggio is trying to convey here (it's really easy). So at the end when the word Koyaanisqatsi appears, stop the movie.
Define your own story.
Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within (2001)
Worth seeing as a movie
I really do think it is a pity that this movie bombed so much. While it is certainly not the greatest film it definitely deserves more respect than it seems to get. So instead of continuing to attempt to take the FF series in a new direction we have Square Pictures now milking the FF7 fandom with Advent Children. People seem to get pived at the fact that there's no swords or magic or friggen yellow birds running around in this movie. Frankly, I'm glad there isn't. That's what the games are FOR. Why go watch a movie about this crap when you can play any of the 11 versions? That said, there are subtle Final Fantasy elements that still seep through (the spirits, the name Cid,etc) This movie is a very well constructed piece of art, with a story interesting enough to keep your attention (assuming you actually pay it). It does have it's flaws though. The direction is not as solid as it probably could be, and it could stand an extra scenario or two to help develop the crew member characters better so we can actually remember their names or care about them more. And whoever they assigned to animate Cid should have been assigned to Aki, because even though she has the most screen time of anyone (and Cid may well be the least) his facial animations were brilliant and realistic while Aki had a tendency to feel, like most people say, a puppet. If you want to see jap-pop kids swinging swords and riding birds, don't watch this movie. If you want to see cut and paste sci-fi so you can over criticize every last MST3k detail, don't watch this movie. However if you would like to see a movie, then watch this movie.
