Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (2004)
perfection
since 1997 i have spent my time on playstation playing only two different game series, final fantasy and metal gear solid and they have not disappointed. mgs 3 takes place in the cold war as an American agent goes on a mission to rescue a scientist and destroy a weapon. a large portion of the game takes place outdoors in the Russia wilderness. this world is incredibly detailed and the in game graphics are second to none. so is the games realism. you are required to camouflage yourself in order to remain unseen and as you play you wear yourself out requiring a meal, which you kill on site, to restore your strength. another great tid pit is the way the game challenges the action hero cliché that he can carry as much ammo and guns as he likes, in this game only a certain amount is able to be carried by snake and the more you carry the more stamina you use.
the story is a big improvement on mgs 2 and is much similar to simple story of mgs 1, with enough twists and turns to keep in interesting.
the game play is great, the new CQC, close quarters combat, is excellent allowing you to sneak up on a guard and incapicate him silently. boss fights are also very good, the sniper battle is one to be remembered.
some believe that the game has to much stealth and not enough action. you can try to get through the game with a violence approach and you could succeed however you will find it more difficult and in my opinion less fun and satisfying than sneaking your way through.
overall the game is perfect in every way, the enemy AI makes is a thing of beauty as they protect themselves with riot shield at the front and men with shotguns and sometimes rocket launchers staying to the rear to inflict major damage. the graphics are of the highest quality especially in game, the cut scenes do not reach the highs of Final fantasy X but then again what game does. the story a nd characters are much more interesting and enjoyable and when finished it would be hard not to be impressed and feel a great sense of accomplishment at completing such a game. (the hardest levels require a lot of skill and most importantly patience.
"Bottom line is, even if you see them coming your not ready for the big moments. No one asks for their life to change, not really. But it does".
Catch Me If You Can (2002)
a great crime/chase film
Catch me if you can is a great film that follows the life of con artist Frank Abagnale jr, played to perfection by the unfortunate Leonardo DiCaprio, and the FBI agent on his trail, played by Tom Hanks. Both of these two play their roles superbly and add to the feel of the movie. Steven Spielberg's conservative directing combined with an excellent script and John William's score creates a great movie.
The Godfather (1972)
over rated
The godfather all in all is a great movie and the best in the organised crime genre but putting it as the number one movie in the top 250 films of all time and the top of countless lists is too much. The roles of Marlon Brando and Al Pacino are excllent but the film on a whole is very over rated. The direction is good not excellent, the script is by no means ground breaking. But many people still refer to it as the best film ever made. Next time you watch this movie compare the script to something with more life and wit(eg fight club) and more lavish directing.
Fight Club (1999)
Fincher joins with nortin and Pitt for their best ever
small spoilers but does not spoil the movie
The powerful story of a man who finds himself in his charismatic friend Tyler Durden. From the start of Fight Club you can tell it was going to be somewhat different from your average hollywood film. Boasting to incredible leads, Edward Norton and Brad Pitt, and one of the most unique directors around, David Fincher the film had a lot going for it. the screenplay adapted from the book was differnt but it lost none of its power or affect. In the film Edward Norton plays a man who works alot and has little or no fun in his life and he plays the role to perfection never missing a note or an opportunity to show his awesome talent. When he meets Brad Pitt his life turns around and the two begin to get in fights to enrich their lives. Brad Pitt play his character as well as Norton and it is a shock to me how they where over looked for best actor nominations. David Fincher's creativity and the way in which he uses computer generated images to enhance the movie. his directing is the best of his career and he was also terribly unluckly to been overlooked for a best director nomination.
The script enhances the film and allows Brad Pitt and Edward Norton to have many incredible lines and very interesting converstaions with each other. Many people expected this film to be action and luckily for them it was not. but some people will struggle to look past the violence and see what is really happening in the movie. Fight Club is a very bold statement aganist globalisation and the corporate power that some companies hold in the world and we have not have seen a film with this power and bravery in recent since and i don't think we every will. If you are looking for straight foward movie steer well clear and if you have a weak stomach for violence some scenes many not be for you. but all in all a great film that all should see. 10/10
