The Mentalist: Seeing Red (2008)

too much crazy for one episode
3 May 2024
Not sure why the writers would make. Van Pelt a nutjob in this episode. Trying to convince others that there are ghosts. Someone with such a mental disorder wouldn't even be allowed to be an agent. I think they have psychological evaluations and being crazy disqualifies you from that I would assume. Then there is the other nutjob. Kristina Frey. A mentalist actually believing she has a power - or playing it so well, you believe her that she believes it. Plus the killer, who has a screw lose, well, because he/she killed someone. Sorry, but a rational person will be annoyed by so many delusional nonsense.

A decent ending for a 30 year long journey
28 December 2023
We get a final gathering of all the familiar faces in this maybe final episode. It's a lightweight, feelgood movie that focuses on the core elements of what made Jurassic Park so great. Without annoying child characters.

And the new reality, exploring the consequences of dinosaurs coexisting with humanity, offers something we haven't seen yet. It's not as thrilling and doesn't have these in-awe moments. But that's OK. It's still a great adventure in the Jurassic Park universe and a fine end for its legacy.

The CGI was great most of the time.

With its fine balance between nostalgia and innovation it's a recommend-watch for fans of the series.

Could be better
15 December 2023
If the characters weren't so annoying and dumb. There isn't much happening in this show except for the interaction between the 3-4 "main characters". Which is mainly bickering or whining. They are supposed to be intelligent adults, but behave like children. It's not adding up. And in terms of monsters, I guess they are saving up money for the last episode? The show isn't exciting, or unforeseen, or thrilling. And even the things you would expect from such a show are barely happening. I'm at episode 4 and 1 episode away from quitting the show.

The minutes I found the show captivating doesn't even come close to the length of one episode.

One of the most overrated shows I've ever watched
4 December 2023
An 8.9? I was expecting something amazing. But I have to force myself through the first two seasons. The characters can't be based on true events. Or they are so changed that they are more fiction than facts. Because at least half the characters in that show are so dumb and behave so idioticly, it's borderline mentally handicapped. And those who aren't dumb behave like they have an emotional disorder or are just plain psychopaths. Nearly all the characters are unbelievable/implausible. It's agonizing to watch. But maybe I just have no idea how dumb people can be.

It's a shame because the cast is impressive.

Imagine this would be reality
24 October 2023
And the Los Angeles PD would allow mentally ill people to become officers. Not sure why the writers would come up with such nonsense. Her character was annoying from the first moment. And even for show standards, this was unrealistic. I mean you either try to be authentic or go full Once Upon a Time. Her character doesn't fit at all. An AI could have written a better script.

Moonfall (2022)

A catastrophic movie
9 August 2023
Decent acting, great visuals and the dumbest script and dialogues imaginable. So exactly what you'd expect from a Roland Emmerich movie. From insipid romantic clichés and family/divorced parents sidestory to painfully forced humor with cringe-worthy lines. The dialogues are more catastrophic than the moon's impending collision. It's like the writers aimed for intergalactic embarrassment. It would get a 5, but the charme of the actors, the great visuals, and some nice details heave it on a barely 6/10. Emmerich should just produce in the future and hire some good writers to handle the script. Or an AI. Would still produce something better.

I can breath in space too
8 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
He had no powers but could survive in space.

He had no powers, was thrown into the sun, and didn't die.

John and Nat fly through the portal to get to Allyston.

Because she's in the void between the two dimensions.

Tal and Jordan fly up into space where Allyston suddenly is.

And the final solution of Superman was to stomp on the earth with the power of a planet killer asteroid and to ... what exactly?

Well, the writers didn't know either. So they created a bright flash and suddenly both earths are seperated again. While it looked like he impacted so hard on the round earth that it could've been destroyed, everything is just fine.

This script has more logical flaws. Maybe let an AI write the scripts. Can't be worse than this.

While the idea was neat, the script was braindead.

Don't watch the last season (8)!
26 June 2023
It's one of these shows where the last season kills everything that was build before. Season 7 has a great ending and actually a good closure for the show. I don't know what happened - and I don't want to know - to the show. If the executives messed up or the channel. I watched it for Castle + Beckett. Plus the team. The show had a wholesome feeling. With good -yes, sometimes silly- humor. The crime solving was just icing on the cake. But with season eight, everything just fell apart. It went from happy and wholesome to tense and sad. It was like seeing your best friends marriage going down. A bummer.

So if you like happy endings like me, stop with the end of season 7.

Not the greatest start into an episode
23 June 2023
Warning: Spoilers
He sees a murder but doesn't call the police immediately. Then he follows the guy in his car and guess what. No reception. In a wealthy suburb. Although he is shown on a country road while trying to call. So he waited with the call until he's out of the suburb and in the wild? An AI could've written a better script. At least the rest of the episode was kinda solid.

Halo (2022– )

I haven't played the games
20 October 2022
The show starts fast and with quite some action. The CGI isn't great, but not awful either. The characters are a bit bland. They have their stories. But there is no real dynamic between them. Most of the time. But the story itself is interesting and the pace between the clues is pleasant. There is a short side arc which I can't tell the relevance of. With an annoying character. But the main arc around the Spartans, the Master Chief, in particular, the Halo, and their connection is a nice little puzzle with pieces coming together pretty linear, and maybe slightly predictable, but not boring. Not an amazing show, but enjoyable and recommendable for SciFi fans. I'm looking forward for season 2.

House of the Dragon (2022– )

Too much soap opera
3 October 2022
And way too many names. Get pen and paper and draw a family tree. Because there are so many of them. And they get shuffled like cards in a poker game. Who is who and who with whom. The intention of being something else than Game of Thrones, something independent made it a Denver Clan of Westeros. A soap opera. The typical telenovela story, focused on a rivalry between two or more people or families in romance or business. The character development GoT stands in no comparison to any characters in House of Dragon. And the big time jump after half of the first season didn't help either. And while there is some tragedy in it, it can't compare with the death of Eddard Stark for example. Plus, the magic and those epic moments of Game of Thrones barely shine. It has to improve a lot to be a worthy successor.

Silly, often cringy, and even annoying sometimes
8 September 2022
The worst Thor movie and the worst MCU movie so far. Good CGI, music, pictures, sound. As usual. And the fight scenes are good. Even the idea of a god killer is decent. And well done. Dark, slightly scary. But way too many flashbacks with narration. Especially about unimportant and uninteresting stuff. The cast does its job despite the awful dialogs. A humourous approach to the Jane & Thor topic was OK. But the uninspired, cringy humor is really killing the movie. Wasted money and potential. Should have been a bit more mature. Good thing I didn't waste money in the theatre for this one. The last 5 minutes were good. Watch and decide for yourself, but be warned.

Decent
31 August 2022
The first half is really good. A great play with sounds and light. Starts fast. Good pace. Has some of the usual "tense" moments. But because they are expected, the tension is average. A few decent jumpscares. But some really good work with darkness and a limited range of view. Not really PG13 if you ask me. Especially the death scenes are pretty brutal.

If you are a wuss like me, it has a nice scare level. It does a fine job transmitting the fear factors of being 6miles deep in the ocean.

Would recommend.

90 more characters because my review is too short. 40 more characters because my review was still too short.

Solid action movie
25 July 2022
This isn't Shakespeare.

If you expect some great dialogues and a great script, you don't really understand what "action movie" means. This is a simple nachos+cheese+jalapenos movie with well-choreographed fights and a lot of explosions. Some dry humor mixed in.

The fine cast has a handful of moments to shine. But this isn't a drama.

The cast does what they are supposed to do. So does the movie.

Recommending, even if you prefer popcorn.

My inner child liked it
9 July 2022
Of course, it's a kids' movie. But that doesn't mean it's not enjoyable. Is it predictable? Of course. Because it's a kids' movie! Is the humor sometimes chilidish? Of course. Because it's a kids' movie! Do the monsters look kinda 'harmless'? Yes, of course. Because... But all the steps from drama, to conflict, to empathy back to conflict and drama to happy end are well made. The pace is good, it has the right amount of great humor, and the usual cuteness.

And while RED in particular, might look a bit 'cheap', the overall CGI is stunning sometimes. The water, the characters, the environment, and the buildings really shine under the fantastic lighting.

So, even if you're an adult that likes a simple-message-happy-end animation movie from time to time, this one is definitively recommendable.

A Quiet Place (2018)
10 minutes in and I'm already annoyed - A bunch of blind animals conquer the world
25 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This scene didn't make any sense. Well, the movie doesn't.

Take away the toy, remove the batteries and put both on the counter?

Then go and leave the kid behind? The smallest one? In a world full of monsters?

Why not remove the batteries and give the toy back to him, and put the batteries in your pocket?

Batteries must be pretty useful in a post-apocalyptic world.

And then go first and leave the kid with the toy and the batteries right next to it?

What parents would not wait at the door and say "Come, we're leaving. Go in front." This movie needs to be pretty good to make up for such a non-sense scene.

Decent -
13 June 2022
The Hawaiian stuff felt a bit constructed. But that could just be because I don't know anything about this culture. But barely any cringe, the obligatory moments of drama, some dry humor, without the exaggerated silly stuff. All with a kinda-serious topic on the side.

Great cast, good music. Could have had a bit more Hawaiian scenery.

But otherwise pretty watchable.

Turn off your brain
9 May 2022
Or the plotholes and the cringy dialogues will torture you. It has decent CGI and the music is fine.

It often feels like an ad for the army. Probably a return in favor for all the stuff they used.

Explosion, fireworks, bots battling each other. Often so much you can't really tell what is happening or who is who.

A movie for teens.

Why didn't she pick up the gun?

Why did the mother look in the opposite direction when the lady came in.

A solid movie
26 September 2021
This review my come 11 years late. But tbh, I wasn't a big fan of another Robin Hood movie back then. But now, after rewatching it, so many years later I must say: Great cast, costumes, sets. Good music. A decent interpretation of Robin Hood. And a lot of humor. Maybe a bit weak in the last quarter.

The movie is charming. Would recommend giving it another try.

Don't care about the books and how close it's to the source material
24 September 2021
But the show is trying too hard to be mysterious. After two episodes the viewer is already left with so many open questions, that this going steep for a Lost or Raised by Wolves development. Combined with the slow pace it is pretty agonizing. The visuals can console over this for now. But the first impression leaves a bittersweet taste. Now we have to wait one week for some answers. The interim rating is a 7/10.

Emma Stone is great. Emma Thompson is great.

I'd give this an 8, but there are too many salty children here on imdb who just rate either 10 or 1. And to balance the 1s, I'm giving it a 9

Would recommend watching it.
