My 50-Odd Favorite Films of the First Decade of the 21st Century (2000-2009)
54 titles |
Public
Setting out to pick films for this list, I decided to go with the most immediately suggested idea of "favorite" films, so what you see here was selected based on a few loose criteria:
1--If I caught this film on TV, would I keep watching it? 2--Have I quoted this film more than once per year since I've seen it? 3--Did it blow me away when I first saw it, and 4--Has it stuck with me?
In other words, while I may admire all of these films aesthetically, I picked them not just for their real or perceived importance but for their entertainment value.
I arranged them by date--I am an historian, after all--and alphabetically within year. I tried to get it as close to 50 as possible but couldn't bring myself to weed out any more. And rather than adding little descriptions or apologia (as the case may be), I'm just plunking this list down and letting you take a gander. Enjoy.

Die rote Jacke (2002)
Excellent short

We watched this recently in one of my film school classes and I was greatly impressed. The story is very simple and told in a highly visual style. There is almost no dialogue, which makes this originally German film accessible to non-German speakers like many of my classmates. I was instantly engrossed in the film, from the opening images of the aftermath of a traffic accident. The story is well-paced and not overbearing, as student films have a tendency to be. The photography is nice and even beautiful in several places, but it is never distracting and the story is always the focus. Excellent work.
This is a filmmaker to keep an eye on.
