Unicorn Store (2017)
Not Bad but Also Not Great
Look, this movie is strange and weird and not everyone is going to like it. But, I enjoyed it and it made me smile. I think Brie Larson did a great job both in front of and behind the camera.
All the Money in the World (2017)
All the Money
Wow, J Paul Getty was a cheap old man. This was a very good movie, great acting performances. A little slow and a bit drawn out. Considering that they recast the lead and refilmed all of his scenes a month before release is very impressive.
Molly's Game (2017)
Mollys Game
Molly's Game is a great start for movies in 2018. It was really well written, well directed, and had superb acting from both Jessica Chastain and Idris Elba. It is a very interesting story that was very well told, going back and forth between present day and the events leading up to it. Actually pretty fun movie too with some good laughs. It's all based off of true events too!
Wonder (2017)
Wonder
This is a solid movie with a great story. Jacob Tremblay is fantastic as Auggie and I love Owen Wilson in almost everything he is in. Motivational story showing us that it's what is on the inside that matters, not what you look like. Warning, you may cry and there is a gut punching twist of emotion that I was not prepared for. There is an point introduced to the plot with like 20 minutes left in the movie that should have ramifications but nothing comes from it and it was kinda annoying.
Pitch Perfect 3 (2017)
PP3
Pitch Perfect 3 was a fun and mostly enjoyable movie like the previous two. This was the weakest of the trilogy. I love Anna Kendrick but the rest of the cast is nothing to get excited about. There were a couple moments of actual laughter but not much. John Lithgow was just a bad miscast as Fat Amys' father, it was weird. There were some other awkward parts just throughout. It tried to be like an action movie at one point and it was just odd. The music was great though, as per usual.
12 Strong (2018)
12 strong
12 Strong is your typical war movie and it's pretty good. Chris Hemsworth was great and pretty charming. Good story, pretty good acting, and inspirational. I love movies based off of true stories.
The Mountain Between Us (2017)
Mountain Between Us
Yeah I mean, it was an alright movie. Idris Elba is great as per usual. There were also a few intense moments. The acting overall was fine. The script was predictable and so-so at best. They tried to turn it into a romance movie like half way through and that was weird. It was also only 1hr 50min but it felt like forever.
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (2017)
3 Billboards
I now understand why this movie is winning a crap ton of awards and nominated for so many Oscars. The acting was outstanding all around, especially from Frances McDormand and Sam Rockwell. Story was well written and directed. Even had some nice comic relief throughout.
Disclaimer: This Movie is not for the faint of heart. It has some serious dark tones and lots of foul language.
Marshall (2017)
Marshall
Marshall is a great movie that delivers on an old-fashioned courtroom drama. Great story with really good acting from the leads. Great cast overall. So far I have loved every role I have seen Chadwick Boseman play, he is a great actor and has this sort of swagger when acting. Sterling K Brown is great and one of the greatest actors in recent years. It was different but enjoyable seeing Josh Gad in a drama. I wish they would make more of these movies that follow Thurgood Marshall's journey. The only negative thing is that it felt a bit long.
I, Tonya (2017)
I, Tonya
I,Tonya was a pretty good movie that was an interesting story but could've been better at times. The acting from Margot Robbie and Allison Janney was great and they deserve their Oscar Noms. Sebastian Stan was pretty good and whoever the guy was that played Shawn was just funny, but like stupid funny. I really enjoyed the way the story was told, with the film editing, it was something different from the normal. Also dealt with the topic of abusive relationships, both parental and spousal, which I found to be intriguing.
Disclaimer: I,Tonya has a pervasive amount of foul language.
The Post (2017)
The Post
The Post is a very good movie and deserves it Best Picture nod. It had a slow 1st act but the 2nd act was great and kept you very much captivated. Meryl Streep is deserving of her nod but I am surprised that Tom Hanks did not get nominated nor did Spielberg for Director. It also a a very well known and talented cast and I was surprised that more people kept popping up that I knew. It simply is a great story based off a true story.
Maze Runner: The Death Cure (2018)
Maze Runner: The Death Cure
On its own, this is actually a pretty good movie. Decent story, good acting, good action. But was it close to following the book? No, not really at all. Sure it kept a few key plot points, I can think of 3, but the rest was different. It was also drawn out and could've been a shorter movie. The Death Cure though is still a satisfying conclusion to a book-to-Movie trilogy.
Hostiles (2017)
Hostiles
I mean, this was a fine movie. Christian Bale did a great job and the rest of the acting was pretty good. There was a fair amount of beautiful scenery shots and it was a decent story. Unfortunately it was just too long and too slow. It could've been cut at least 15 or 20 minutes. It failed to hold my attention throughout the entirety of the movie. Like so much of the movie was just them riding on horses going from NM to MT.
Black Panther (2018)
Black Panther
I must say I am slightly biased because Marvel movies are my favorite movies but WOW. Black Panther is a really great movie. It has a great story with some unexpected twists. It is a great script that was brought to life by a phenomenal cast. Chadwick Boseman is a perfect T'Challa and Black Panther. Micheal B Jordan provides a great performance as Erik Killmonger and the character has really good depth and a back story that makes him a convincing Bad Guy, possibly the greatest MCU villain we've seen yet. T'Challa's little sister Shuri steals many of the scenes she is in. Wakanda is beautiful and the movie was beautiful. Black Panther is made up of a predominately African American cast as it should be and provides and rich culture and shows us what an African nation would look like if it wasn't conquered. This is very much a political movie as it is a superhero movie. The fight scenes were mostly great and well choreographed. Some little weaknesses were the CGI wasn't perfect and it was a bit slow at the beginning. There are 2 after credit scenes that are both important. But I will be seeing this movie again in theaters. #WakandaForever
