The movie tells Rocket's back-story, which is filled with horrible acts of cruelty. It is very dark and parts are painful to watch. The villain is not the most powerful the Guardians have faced, but he is the most abominable. He performs Hideous experiments on defenseless animals in his pursuit of "perfection.". Though the creatures are actually just computer animation it makes the scenes no less difficult to watch. Perhaps this was not a story suitable for this genre. Sci-Fi Action Comedy?
The film makers attempted to offset the sad parts with some rather lame humor. The whole movie seems as though it had multiple writers, directors and editors and feels very disjointed. There are some good scenes, just not enough to save this from being a big disappointment overall. The movie also attempts to close the door on this iteration of the Guardians as they each go their own way at the end. This ending also feels disjointed and out of place since they seem to make this decision abruptly during the otherwise uplifting ending. If you sit though the credits, there is an allusion to a possible new Guardians iteration and a return of Star-Lord.
There is an audio adventure produced by "Graphic Audio" which tells the story of a mad scientist that "clones" Grut. With each clone Grut grows weaker, so the Guardians must find and stop him. This would have made a MUCH better 3rd film and left the door open for more.
