Big Mouth: What Are You Gonna Do? (2020)
A weak finish to an ok season
This was the weakest episode of this season for me. There's too much going on, it's not tied together well, and I'm going to come out and say it, the change in voice actors for Missy was jarring and took me out of the show. There was no point in doing it for just one episode rather than just finishing and starting the new actor next season. She tries to sound like Jenny's version and doesn't succeed.
Father of the Bride Part 3 (ish) (2020)
Cute but Cringe
I watch both Father of the Bride movies multiple times a month. They're some of my favorites, and I've been hoping for a third part for years. I knew this special wouldn't be the caliber of a real movie, but I was excited about it.
Unfortunately I found it fairly derivative and forced. There were a lot of awkward references to the movies that were designed to be nostalgic for the viewer, but come off unnaturally when dropped in conversation. Kieran Culkin in particular was very awkward and seemed to be trying too hard. He came off as fake and way too "actor-y."
It really didn't work to have George and Nina separated in the house. It had to be done due to the nature of the filming but it made no sense to have them zooming from two computers in the same house, especially if this is their son getting married.
I also thought it was really strange to have Matty and his fiancée get married over Zoom, which I don't think is even legal. And the fact that Annie and Brian never had another child seems out of character. They had no problem dropping in a random woman and her father and expecting us to immediately care about them, so they could have given them another kid or two.
I liked the grown up babies more than I thought I would. Somehow they felt the most natural even though they were new to the cast. It was nice seeing the Banks family again, and I enjoyed the little bit of warmth I got from the nostalgia rush, but hopefully there will be a real movie someday that isn't so gimmicky.
Hellboy (2019)
Fun and Exciting (also super gory)
I liked it a lot. I'm not a fanboy, and even though I like the Guillermo versions as much as anyone, this was good. I liked the story and the characters, and the visual effects were great too. Rather gory so be prepared if that's not your thing.
I'm glad I gave it a chance instead of listening to those who are tearing it down without even seeing it. I hope they make another because Abe is my favorite and I'd like to see what this group does with him.
Father of the Bride (1991)
Sweet and Funny
You could find worse ways to spend two hours. This is a light, fun comedy with a good heart at the center. Any parent can relate to George's feelings toward losing his little girl.
I don't know why people get so confused about the budget in the film. I see these crazy numbers getting thrown out but the math is right there in the movie. $250 a head. The initial head count is 572. George puts his foot down and insists they keep it to 150 people. That's $37,500. Even if it balloons up to 200 people that's still $50,000. Which is a stupid amount to me but to an upper middle class/lower upper class family in a high COL area, maybe not. Even tacking on costs for new clothes and flights for the Danish relatives. George and Nina both seem to own successful businesses, and George is extremely cheap in most areas. They likely have a healthy savings account. It's not the biggest stretch, especially when it comes to movies.
People who want grit, high drama, or ultra realism, or are snobby about remakes may not enjoy. For anyone else who just wants to sit with their family and enjoy a sweet comedy, you probably will.
Beauty and the Beast (2017)
Meh
Not bad, not great. Emma Watson really drags it down. She's really phoning it in on the acting and can't sing well either. The movie is visually stunning, and I enjoyed the enchanted objects for the most part. The story wasn't off putting but it wasn't terribly compelling. I drifted in and out. It was mostly worth it for Dan Stevens, who I always find mesmerizing.
I don't say any of this out of loyalty for the 1991 animated film. I don't worship that movie or even like it that much. So they had a chance for a win with me, but it doesn't stand out.
