A Certain Kind of Silence (2019)
Very weird and unnerving
This is a pretty weird movie, very unnerving. Not much is actually happening but everything seem so wrong. The story builds slowly, only to get weirder and even more unnerving until at the end we get at a very surprising end. The ending got eager to know more about the subject of this movie. I searched Google and found many a story on this subject. To my disgust, the subject of this movie isn't just some made up story. It's actually based on real events. This movie is a must see for everyone interested in psychological thrillers with a strong social warning. It's quite unsatisfying I just didn't manage to figure out if those real events have stopped, besides, I wonder about the exact subject of this movie: was this also part of reality?
The Letter for the King (2020)
Don't compare it to the books
I just read both Dutch books to my daughter: Letter for the King and Secrets of the Wild Woods, written by Tonke Dragt about halve a century ago. Timeless and very good books. My wife and I both enjoyed them when we were young. And I did enjoy reading them again to my daughter.
Now this movie. The names are similar but that's about where the similarity ends. Just don't compare the series to the books. Really don't. The timeline has been adopted somewhat but the story got altered immensely in an effort to make it more interesting for the intended audience. That somewhat failed. I do like the book's story way better. However, I did find watching the series enjoyable. Will my daughter enjoy watching it? Unlikely. This said, I do look forward to the next episodes.
Defending Jacob (2020)
Last episode is out of line
The entire series is rather slow, builds up to a grand finale. Then the last episode started, it's faster than the other 7 episodes and during this episodes things speed up considerably. Am I still watching the same series?
From other reviews I understood the ending is different from the book. Why did the directors choose to change the plot? I don't really care about having an open end to a series but is it as the writer of the book intended?
Guess I'll have to read the book. I'd suggest: no more episodes to this series. If the directors would like to do something, replace the last episode with two or three episodes with a more proper ending in the same speed as the other episodes. It would be way more powerful and way more impressive.
The Mist (2007)
Just another horror story?
With just a happy ending like most hollywood horror movies? It did look that way up until the end. The end is dark. Which does make this movie better.
Ensamma i rymden (2018)
Nice movie for kids
Also kids new to science fiction might find this movie quite some nice surprise. It's funny to watch, sometimes quite exciting but it also has a very serious note: we, humans, are killing the earth and some other species in outer space doesn't like us because of that and are out there to eliminate us.
Looking forward to the sequel, Ted!
Das doppelte Lottchen (2017)
Great family movie
Luise and Lotte (I have just seen the German version), twins, happen to visit the same summer camp while they don't even know of each other's existence. At first they don't get along together but this improves soon and at some point they discover they must be twin-sister. Then they decide to swap places: Luise will go to Lotte her family while Lotte will go to Luise her family. A lot happens, a lot goes wrong but the movie has a happy ending.
The movie is easy to grasp for children and is entertaining for adults. In all, a nice family-movie.
Seen at Cinekid, Amsterdam, with the twins present. Met them: nice girls, in reality not too much different from the movie.
Victor... pendant qu'il est trop tard (1998)
Very intriguing
The movie catches the viewer from the first second: what the heck is going on here? This isn't a movie for those who like movies which explain just everything to the viewer: with this movie many scenes will make you wonder again: what's the meaning of this? It keeps the viewer focused during the entire movie. Some parts are filmed very romantically as only the French can. Sometimes one realizes some scenes aren't really credible, but do they need to be? They don't hurt the movie, they actually make the movie to this wonderful piece of French art. I watched this movie with a 13 year old boy, who couldn't take away his attention from this movie. It was all too strange and too intriguing.
