Fallout (2024)
Disregard the "1" votes; try it
My three sons, now in their 20s, all played the game and all have watched the show and endorsed it.
A baby boomer, I am on episode five and am thoroughly enjoying it. Perhaps my favorite part is watching Walter Goggins.
There are a few weak points, like the guy who plays Maximus as others have said. He's not an especially good actor, nor is he a sympathetic character. The campiness is presented at face value, and the costumes, set design, soundtrack and overall direction are superb in my opinion.
You don't have to be a fan of the game or even that aware of it - I watched it from time to time when my sons were playing - but if you are into sci-fi and good series with character arcs, give this show a try.
Zion (2018)
Amazing story, tarnished by poor storytelling
This is an amazing story, with amazing people, but the storytelling is too polished, too often accompanied by music, overly edited, over-filmed, and, frankly, preachy.
Zion's story is one of courage and inspiration. But the religious under- and overtones are unnecessary, such as the woman praying over him in a voiceover halfway through. Who is she? Are we all to agree with her premises?
And the coach's tearful description of Zion's accomplishment came too soon. That was a climactic speech he made at his desk, underscoring how Zion thought of Coach Donohue as a father figure.
I wrestled. It's a wonderful sport. It was insightful that Coach pointed out that it's two men trying to impose their will on each other.
But where was the conflict necessary for any story, even an 11-minute one? Surely the "conflict" was more than within Zion himself. How about showing us rather than telling us about those who wouldn't accept him? Those who "made comments to their teammates" about Zion?
This could have made a great story: just double the length and tell it better.
Killing Eve: Hello, Losers (2022)
It ended the way it was written
"5/10" reviews are indecisive and unhelpful. "1s" are downright mean-spirited. Why is this a "10"?
Three reasons.
One: because it ended exactly as it was written.
Two: there were a lot of loose ends tied up without being schmaltzy. Carolyn learning about Konstantin's death from Pam, and reading the note and having that oh-so-subtle expression of surprising pain, was really well done.
Three: aren't you glad to know the series is done? People are pissed at the ending, which means that the whole series was great. None of us wanted it to end, or at least not this way. But at least I know it's done and I can look back at all the good parts.
It was an awesome series. Villanelle was an assassin. How appropriate that she gets whacked. Eve is swimming in a river of tears. Carolyn is characteristically composed.
Central Park: Episode One (2020)
New show blooming like Turtleheads
Perhaps the best thing to hit Central Park since the clean-up in the '80s, this family-friendly animated series - yes, including a bit of adolescent humor but all in good nature - has the best of Broadway-quality music, rapier-like humor, solid animation, race-positive roles, inside-New York allusions for anyone who's lived there for any length or grew up there (especially those born before 1970) and...who could resist Stanley Tucci perhaps channeling a famous female hotelier?
The stage is set for an exciting next episode.
Not to be missed.
