Blindness (2008)
Should have been heralded, not panned
I really don't understand how this film got panned by critics internationally.
This is an exceptional film, based on great source material (a novel of the same name by nobel-laureate José Saramago).
The only problems that cried out to me, were the over-sentimentality of the drawn-out ending and the few dubious character motivations/decisions at particular moments within the film.
However, aside from these small blips, this is as hard a hitting allegory and social commentary as I have ever seen. If you like to think and be challenged by a film then this will not disappoint you.
If you like to be spoon fed (Don't be embarrassed, most of my friends fall into this category!) and watch films purely to feel good and be entertained then don't watch this film. The mood is oppressive throughout because it has to be to accurately portray the situation and the moods of the characters.
You have been warned! If you like gritty sci-fi/dystopian movies that take us to the edge of humanity and test us to the limit, then this is one of the best films out there hands down.
I will therefore give this film two reviews: If you want to be purely entertained and life-affirmed - 2/10
If you appreciate cinema as an art-form and like to be challenged - 9/10
Taffin (1988)
1988
Just finished watching this film and I don't know why everyone seems to dislike it.
This movie came out in 1988, so give it a break. It doesn't advertise itself as a mind-blowing, avant-garde masterpiece. It's a simple action thriller set in Ireland and it certainly satisfies those credentials.
Aside from some typically 80's gratuitous sex/violence moments (of which I have seen far worse from the genre) the film flowed fairly well and kept me entertained throughout.
The characters were fairly believable if you have lived anywhere on the British Isles and the locations are well chosen.
If you want to watch a movie to just kick back and pass some time, then this one will do the trick.
