Crook: It's Good to Be Bad (2010)
Strictly A One-Time Watch
One thing that one notices about Emraan Hashmi is that he usually does very "hatke" type movies. Crook, once again, proves this.
Crook handles a number of different issues, it handles sibling rivalry, racism and racial attacks, and the truth of life. Now, put all these issues together, mix it in with two girls, a man who wants PR and is able to do anything to get it, and you get Crook.
Now, the first half of the movie is just happy happy Jai/Suraj (Emraan Hashmi) and happy Happy Suhaani (Neha Sharma) and annoying annoying Samarth (Arjan Bajwa).
The second half, where the movie takes a dramatic turn because of the racial attack is what really keeps the movie going. the attacks really make you think about the maybe disadvantages of living in the US or abroad, away from India/Pakistan and what might happen. However, I think that the attacks were less extreme and maybe a little less violent than displayed.
Music, "Challa" is very cute and is popular and widely heard on the Radio. "Mere Bina" is soulful and pleasant to the ears. Acting, well let's see. Emraan Hashmi acts quite well, in the first half there isn't much room for actual acting, though in the second half he proves he can act. Neha Sharma is new to Bollywood, but she acted quite well for a newcomer. Arjan Bajwa overacts at times. The Australian is only there for skin show.
Overall, a decent watch, but not a good idea for the light hearted. Also, not really a family movie. Better off alone. One time watch at it's best.
Laaga Chunari Mein Daag: Journey of a Woman (2007)
Very Moving - leaves you thinking
I remember when this movie first released, and I was told that I was too young to watch it. My mother told me that the theme of the movie was a little mature for my age, so after huffing and puffing, I decided I would wait a little while.
So, about two weeks ago, I decided to finally watch it (late much?) ha ha. And well, it was worth the wait. As the movie opened up on screen, I knew from that moment that it would be amazing.
This is a story of a family, this is a story of a boy and a girl, this is a story of two sisters, this is a story about the truth of life and what people do for a living to make an income for themselves.
Badki and Chutki (Rani Mukherjee and Konkona Sen Sharma) are living happily with their parents (Jaya Bachchan and Anupam Kher) even though Banaras isn't the most glamorous place in India, and neither is their current lifestyle. But all that changes simply when their father gets a heart attack after a certain string of events.
Rani Mukherjee rushes to the city where it can all happen, certain that she will make it big and send her family money for her father's medicines and treatment. She is proved wrong. After her qualifications and language barrier preventing her from doing the jobs she tries out for, she only has one solution-prostitution.
Now, this is where the movie takes a big leap forward. And you slowly watch the transformation of a small village girl becoming a high level escort, taking the name of Natasha. lying to her family and sending high amounts of money, causes her father happy, her sister excited, and her mother onto what she is doing.
This movie is not a tear-jerker, though some scenes may make you cry if you cry easily. Note the scene where Konkona finds out about Natasha and follows her to the hotel and then the breakdown which follows. Or the scene where her life is unfolding in front of her eyes. Or maybe the scene in which she lets the manager of the company take full advantage of her. They all leave a lasting impact on you, even after the movie has finished.
Rani Mukherjee proves once again-she can act. We've seen her in many different characters, each with a different state of mind and under different circumstances. Konkona Sen Sharma also acted exceptionally well as the little sister. Kunal Kapoor is very convincing. Abishek Bachchan is just wasted. Anupam Kher is very good. Jaya Bachchan is alright.
Definitely worth a watch, but watch this alone, not with family.
Golmaal 3 (2010)
Strictly Okay
Golmaal 3. Thrice the expectations, thrice the hype. Thrice the comedy? One would think, based on the marketing and trailers. But for me personally, Golmaal (1) still is a classic and will always remain, no matter how many sequels they make for this one.
The usual 'gisee pitee' story about two different gangs and how they clash because of their parents marriage, throw in a few lame songs, a thief with bad memory, a ten minute family drama, an overweight Mithun who looks overly uncomfortable throughout, and you get Golmaal 3. After one point, you just want to start throwing popcorn at the screen. Tushar Kapoor goes slightly overboard in the scene where he is telling his siblings what he has overheard. Kareena Kapoor overacts, Ajay Devgn just looks old and out of place, while Shreyas Talpade and Kunal Khemu and of course, Paresh Rawal all are just simply hilarious.
The jokes start to get repetitive after one point, and you just want to leave or slap someone, or go to sleep. or all three.
A one time watch, only if you're bored.
Anjaana Anjaani (2010)
Doesn't live up to the expectations
Before I start reviewing this movie, let me just say that I took two points off because- one for the lame jokes or well attempts at jokes, and another for the predictability of the movie.
Now. Anjaana Anjaani. First look at the trailer or sneak peek and honestly, you don't really know what to expect from the movie. But you do know that it will be good because one- it looks DIFFERENT (something which Bollywood movies sometimes cannot do) two-the star cast looks good, and three- the director. Sajid Nadiadwala has made good movies in the past, so one expects this one to be successful too.
So the movie begins with us seeing Akash (Ranbir Kapoor) walking to his suicide point, a bridge in NYC. We then find out the reason of him wanting to suicide is because he is the cause of the entire stock market crashing. As he is about to jump off the bridge, enter Kiara (Priyanka Chopra) who is drunk at the time and tells him not to hesitate and just do it. After many interrupted attempts by Akash, the coast guard catches them and tells them to get off the bridge. After they do so, Akash jumps in front of a car, and Kiara attempts again but instead, falls ON the actual bridge.
Later, after meeting at the same hospital, they decide to attempt again, but together, at Kiara's house. After more than two or three MORE failed attempts, Kiara thinks that maybe they have something to complete in life so they decide to suicide on New Year's Eve at midnight.
This is what leads up to the actual story. Up until this point, it is quite interesting and cute to watch. Then, the dramatic points get a bit annoying after a while, mixed in with the flashbacks, songs one after another, gets a bit annoying. Overall, it is a very good movie, but not as good as one expects. Ranbir Kapoor is an amazing actor and he has proved it mainly with this movie. Note the scene in the hotel room- the expressions are priceless. Not singling out Priyanka Chopra. You actually start to believe she is Kiara after one point. Note the sequence in the car when she breaks down and cuts her hair. It is extremely moving.
Recommended if you would like a bit of a change, but maybe wait till it comes out on DVD.
Badmaa$h Company (2010)
Watchable, though predictable
A mark goes off for length (lots of scenes could have been made shorter) and one goes off due to how predictable the movie is.
Shahid Kapoor, Anuskha Sharma, Vir Das and Mi Yang Chang are four friends looking for a way to make money. They use different methods to get where they are, but what follows is the usual: lies, betrayal, dishonesty, and fights.
Shahid Kapoor has acted extremely well. Note the scene at the restaurant. the way he explodes is just wow. Anushka Sharma is really likable as Bulbul and the pain she goes through. Vir Das acts well, especially in the emotional scenes.
MiYang Chang handles the "cheeny" insults very interestingly, and especially towards the end where the two friends find out he's stopped drinking.
As for songs, Ayaashi has a great video which makes you want to go shopping, at least in my case. Fakeera is a very good song which fits the situation perfectly. Chaska & Jingle Jingle are hummable.
Overall, a worthwhile watch, good for some time-pass entertainment.
Kites (2010)
Major Disappointment.. =/
This movie gets four stars, which it deserves. One point for the interesting and vibrant locations, one point for the songs and background music, one for the action scenes, and one for Hrithik Roshan.
The introduction of the story is the usual, as you would expect. Set in America, Jay (Hrithik Roshan) is here to make some money, but fails each time he tries. Enter Gina (Kangana Ranaut) who says she loves him, but he turns her down. What he doesn't know is that shes one of the richest people in the city. Stunned at his luck, he goes back and asks her to be his dance partner for the upcoming competition. She agrees, and they become closer.
Now, when Gina's dad meets Jay, he asks him to attend his son Tony's engagement, and that is where the story makes some progress. He meets his wife that he married for green card.. Natasha (Barbara Mori) or known as Linda.
From there on, its pretty much predictable. The love, the action , everything looks as if its straight out of a Hollywoood movie. Barbara Mori does pretty well, Hrithik Roshan acts well but is just alright, though his dance moves are impressive. Kangana Ranaut is a huge surprise.
The PROBLEM with this movie is not the story, but with the way the story is portrayed on screen. If they focused on one thing rather than three, the movie would have worked. There are three main conflicts. Gina and Jay, Tony and Natasha, and of course, their love story.
If only one of these was focused on, it might have worked. The ending, is also pathetic. You think to yourself "what the hell is going on" As after you walk out of the movie theater, you realize that ending made no sense at all.
Worth watching once.
I Hate Luv Storys (2010)
Awww.. So Cute =)
Okay so basically, this is OBVIOUSLY a typical, cheesy PG type movie that you watch when you're going through a rough time. or when you're just in love. :) And before writing this little review on this movie, I read the other reviews by other users, to see what THEY thought. And truthfully, I burst out laughing at one question they all shared: "WHY ARE MOVIES LIKE THIS MADE??" Well, use your brain. If you were paying even a little attention during the film, its obvious why they're made. They're made because people LIKE these cheesy movies.
Now if this was a perverted, R rated movie with another typical playboy story, the user reviews would be far different. But just when watching the trailer, you can play the story out in your head. But that's a good thing, because that's sort of the point of the film. To remake it, but the modern version of those 1990 epic movies.
Enough about that, now more about the actual movie.
J (Imran Khan) and Simran (Sonam Kapoor) both work for the same director, Veer Kapoor, the best maker of romantic "sagas" which people ADORE.
J, hates love stories. And he also thinks that LOVE doesn't exist. While Simran, is the exact opposite. She adores love stories, and in fact, loves everything. She's extremely happy with her fiancé Raj (Samir Dattani) He plays the part well, as the protective and irritating fiancé. You want to punch him at times.
The usual begins, with Simran realizing her love for J, and J going-> WTF? because he's THAT clueless. Then, J realizes his mistake, but Simran says "no." Overall, I really enjoyed this movie. It has the funny-ness, and the cute-ness. Note the scene right at the very end. ADORABLE. Or maybe when J breaks down like a teenage girl on the phone to his mother. Awww.
Kunal, playing his best friend, is hilarious. His jokes are just rib tickling.
All the songs are good. Jab Mila Tu makes you smile, Bin Tere makes you want to cry because its played on the sad moments, Bahara makes you laugh because of J's expressions, and Sadka Hua is just really sweet. They're all worth a listen.
Imran Khan has acted really good. Each and every movie of his is worth a watch so far, because of his acting. His expressions, the way he delivers each line, is just cute.
Sonam Kapoor carries the part well, and her acting is okay too.
Samir Dattani is alright, and Kunal is hilarious.
Overall, recommended for a teenage girl or just anyone looking for fun.
Milenge Milenge (2010)
Lacking & Dated
This movie, was perfectly fit for 2004-2005. If it released then, it would have definitely done better than it is doing now.
Starring Kareena and Shahid, this is the usual done and re-done story.. Kareena goes to a tarot card reader and says she will meet her love of her life within the next seven days, on a foreign beach.
Obviously, she believes it, and has to go abroad for something, and the story unfolds.
The beginning of the movie is bearable, but as it develops, it doesn't work. Before the scene even begins, the viewer knows exactly what is going to happen. This is one of the reasons why it doesn't work.
Another reason would be the acting. Four years ago, Shahid and Kareena weren't exactly the most talented actors. After their acting was recognized in certain movies (Jab We Met) they did quite a lot of movies, especially Shahid Kapoor.
The music is just forced, the only likable song would be the Himesh track, the rest are just sort of there.
It's very dated, and not really entertaining, just one of those half-baked, cheesy movies that you won't want to watch again.
Not Recommended, unless you don't have ANYTHING to watch. Definitely not in cinemas!
