Into the Dark: My Valentine (2020)
Worst installment of it all
Worst installment of the ITD series. This many poor reviews for a reason. Because it's a collective agreement how horrible it was. The characters, the story, the music, the acting, everything is so awful.
Such a shallow story that they tried to force as a more interesting and engaging one. The cutesy sounds and visuals like it's a freaking Snapchat filter with "mischievous devil horns" and hearts is really pandering to the lowest common denominator for entertainment.
There is no way somebody didn't go up to Jason Blum and go "I'll tickle your pickle if you allow me to make this movie."
This one is an easy skip in the series.
Hocus Pocus 2 (2022)
3 decades later and this was bombed
30 years and this is what you come up with? It's as if my little pony had a Halloween special after school during the daylight because it didn't want to scare the toddlers watching it.
The story was completely forced and aloof. The writing was spent more pandering to "quirky goofy teen Disney kids" atmosphere than actually honoring the characters and story.
Also, multiple musical numbers with complete choreography and flash mob dancing??
The people who say this movie was true to the original are the same people who make their 16yr olds hold hands walking through parking lots because it's "scary.
Why did they have to tone the movie down to pander to such a crybaby audience afraid of a little darkness....
A League of Their Own (1992)
A movie I frequently revisit
With the new A League of their Own series out on Amazon, I wanted to watch the old 90s movie again. I've watched it nearly every year since it came out and never tire of it. Geena Davis pulls off the classic beauty look wonderfully and delivers a strong character performance. So does Tom Hanks. The casting was largely amazing , coupled with strong writing that incorporates comedy and drama, it's worth everyone seeing just once. And I hate the game of baseball. I hate most sports. But adore this movie.
The only thing I can't stand is how grating Rosie O Donnell is in this movie. Annoying voice, often projects over the crowd, forces her way into social situations like a bull in a China shop but you kind of get over it.
I also can't stand how whiney Kitt is. As I've gotten older, every time I see their relationship, it irks me how Kitt deflects all of her problems and insecurities on Dottie.
Other than that, still love the movie and really enjoying the series now too.
A Nightmare on Elm Street: The Dream Child (1989)
Eh, there's been worse
There's been worse sequels. Like that Cult of Thorn stint from Halloween. This one isn't as bad but it's pretty rough in some spots. It had some okay ideas and creativity. But I feel like most horror movies involving children and babies are just awful. Weak writing, lame characters, "my baby, my baby, we've got to save my baby with a forced plot" yeah yeah yeah.
It was okay to spend a lazy Sunday afternoon watching for background noise while we did other things.
If you find it for free on TV, that's one thing. Not worth renting or purchasing.
Sonic the Hedgehog (2020)
Jim Carey made me rewatch this
First, this movie seems to have a sad magic about it, because it's the last thing we saw in theaters before Covid hit. I wasn't happy about being dragged to a kids movie (I'm a jerk, I know) and I probably wouldn't have complained as much if I would have known the world was going to flip in a few weeks. I did laugh at several of Jim Carey's scenes, which made me think I should rewatch this without such a jaded view. I'm really impressed with how the company listened to everyone and changed Sonic's design into something more befitting and less grating, and I loved the character dynamics of everyone involved. I still think Jim Carey makes this movie, and I'm not a particular Jim Carey fan (again, I'm a horrible person), but he had me cracking up again and I'm looking forward to the sequel. There was the perfect balance of comedy, action, and kind of "drama" in it that made it worth watching again. I actually went and bought this on Blu Ray recently because I wanted it in my collection and, as stupid as it may sound, as kind of a reminder how quickly things can change and to enjoy the the time you have with your loved ones. Even if you didn't want go in the first place.
Shutter Island (2010)
Psychological and Emotional
This is one of those movies that you can watch over and over and still find some new subtle clues, messages, and twists. I watch it every few years, since it came out, and I still find things that make me sit on the edge of my seat and excitedly point at the TV. It is so incredibly thorough down to the smallest detail and it keeps you glued to the screen. The depth of feeling and emotion Leonardo DiCaprio played in this is so beautiful and intense. It's infuriating to think of all of the outstanding work he has performed over the years and only just recently won his first Oscar. I believe he was absolutely deserving of one from Shutter Island, let alone his other performances.
If you can, pick up the Blu Ray and watch the extra features after the movie. One of the coolest things to me was that they actually brought in the Medical Director from the now defunct, extremely notorious Bridgewater Hospital which was one of the most ill-reputed mental institutions in the United States. The fact that he leant his experience into creating the atmosphere and emotion from his own work into this movie was amazing.
The Resort (2021)
Rough yet truthful reviews
The other reviews cover it pretty well. This one was absolutely awful. Probably the worst movie I've seen in years.
H. H. Holmes: Original Evil (2018)
Went in with an open mind
I'm often supportive of amateur films but this one is way off the mark. The editing, the music, the repetitive speech...its almost like a middle school essay being read. As others have said, a lot of unnecessary speech and clips of irrelevant stuff. The acting is just....completely unconvincing. I'm pretty disappointed.
Nightmare Next Door (2011)
Narration is grating
I agree with the other reviews. The cases are tragic and interesting; but, the narration seems like it's advertising a low budget 90s rom com. All you need is upbeat music, bright color block lettering displaying the name of each episode, and a forced laugh track. I consider myself pretty desensitized to a lot of situations, even callous at times, but this is just garbage and I think these families deserve better than to have a failed college humor writer attempt bad puns and jokes just to be able to claim on his resume he has experience in crime narration and comedy narration.
